Notes: The molecular beam epitaxial growth of InSb on (111)B GaAs has been investigated. It was found that for a given Sb/In ratio, a higher growth temperature was required for the growth of InSb on (111)B GaAs compared to that on (001) GaAs. This difference has been attributed to the bonding characteristics of the (111)B and (001) surface. Once growth had been optimized, it was found that the material characteristics of (111)B InSb were almost identical to that of (001) InSb, i.e., independent of orientation. For example, the x-ray full width at half-maximum and 300 K mobility had the same absolute values for (111) InSb and (001)InSb and followed the same dependence with the sample thickness. Te was found to be a well-behaved n-type dopant for (111)B InSb. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report InGaAs quantum dot intersubband infrared photodetectors grown by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition on semi-insulating GaAs substrates. The optimum growth conditions were studied to obtain uniform InGaAs quantum dots constructed in an InGaP matrix. Normal incidence photoconductivity was observed at a peak wavelength of 5.5 μm with a high responsivity of 130 mA/W and a detectivity of 4.74×107 cm H1/2/W at 77 K. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Long-wavelength InTlSb photodetectors operating at room temperature are reported. The photo- detectors were grown on (100) semi-insulating GaAs substrates by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. Photoresponse of InTlSb photodetectors is observed up to 11 μm at room temperature. The maximum responsivity of an In0.96Tl0.04Sb photodetector is about 6.64 V/W at 77 K, corresponding to a detectivity of about 7.64×108 cm Hz1/2/W. The carrier lifetime in InTlSb photodetectors derived from the stationary photoconductivity is 10–50 ns at 77 K. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this letter we report the molecular beam epitaxial growth and characterization of InAs/GaSb superlattices grown on semi-insulating GaAs substrates for long wavelength infrared detectors. Photoconductive detectors fabricated from the superlattices showed photoresponse up to 12 μm and peak responsivity of 5.5 V/W with Johnson noise limited detectivity of 1.33×109 cm Hz1/2/W at 10.3 μm at 78 K. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report on the growth of near bulklike InSb on GaAs substrates by molecular beam epitaxy despite the 14% lattice mismatch between the epilayer and the substrate. Structural, electrical, and optical properties were measured to assess material quality. X-ray full widths at half-maximum were as low as 55 arcsec for a 10 μm epilayer, peak mobilities as high as ∼125 000 cm2/V s, and carrier lifetimes up to 240 ns at 80 K. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The major mechanism by which bacteria acquire free or haemoglobin-bound haem involves direct binding of haem to specific outer membrane receptors. Serratia marcescens and Pseudomonas aeruginosa have an alternative system, which involves an extracellular haemophore, HasA, that captures free or haemoglobin-bound haem and shuttles it to a specific cell surface outer membrane receptor, HasR. Both haem-free (apoprotein) and haem-loaded (holoprotein) HasA bind to HasR, evidence for direct protein–protein interactions between HasA and HasR. HasA binding to HasR takes place in a tonB mutant. TonB is thus required for a step subsequent to HasA binding.

Notes: Through the analysis of a non-motile mutant of Listeria monocytogenes, we identified and characterized a locus containing the cheR, motA and motB genes. These three genes are homologous to the cheR, and motA/B genes of Bacillus subtilis which in this organism are 954 kb apart. The gene organization in Listeria is also not similar either to that of Escherichia coli in which cheR and motAB are 5.9 kb apart. CheR and motA/B, as previously reported for flaA, the flagellin gene, are thermoregulated with a higher expression at 25°C and low expression at 37°C. In a ΔprfA strain, motA expression was derepressed at 37°C, suggesting that PrfA, the transcriptional activator of virulence genes, downregulates motility genes in Listeria at 37°C.

Notes: Abstract. Heat shock genes are found in all organisms, and synthesis of heat shock proteins is induced by various stressors in nearly all the cells forming these organisms. However, a particular situation is noticed for hsp70 genes in mouse embryos at the beginning of their development. First, spontaneous expression of hsp70 is observed at the onset of zygotic genome activity. Second, inducible expression is delayed until morula or early blastocyst stages. A better understanding of both these points depends on a more careful analysis of hsp70 expression in relation to their major regulators, the heat shock factors. In this review, we will see how the development of the preimplanta tion embryo highlights the complexity of heat shock gene regulation involving trans-cis interactions and the cellular and nuclear environment.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The rarely occurring bilateral CCAM has a poor prognosis. Case Report: At birth boy E. presented with respiratory distress. His bilateral severe CCAM was misdiagnosed until the typical bullous x-ray pattern developed within the first few days of life. His condition deteriorated despite conservative treatment. Facing respiratory and cardiac decompensation he underwent unilateral pneumonectomy. The diagnosis was histologically confirmed. A refillable balloon was implanted to prevent mediastinal shifting. Boy E. stabilized gradually and came off both CPAP and supplementary oxygen. At age 1 y, during a course of severe pneumonia he died of sudden cardiac arrest. Discussion: According to the literature, bilateral severe CCAM unequivocally leads to death within days or weeks. In contrast, our patient improved gradually after surgery. But, CCAM bears an increased risk of cardial decompensation in infancy which surgery can reduce but not eliminate. For the time being, in cases of severe bilateral CCAM there is no effective treatment modality other than surgery.
