Notes: Abstract  If activation of the p53 gene is involved in the progression or metastasis of colon cancer, it may affect the angiogenic phenotype in vivo. To verify this hypothesis, we studied the correlation between p53 accumulation and expression of thrombospondin-1 (TSP1) in colon cancer specimens. Levels of TSP1 gene expression were estimated by Northern blotting in 65 colon cancers. Accumulation of p53 and the distribution of TSP1 protein were evaluated immunohistochemically. Various levels of TSP1 gene expression were seen in colon cancers, while p53 accumulation was confirmed in 42 of the 65 colon cancers. The level of TSP1 gene expression demonstrated a significant inverse correlation with p53 accumulation in colon cancer. Colon cancer cells expressed TSP1 protein and p53 accumulation reciprocally in the same nests. These results suggest that alterations in the tumour suppressor gene p53 may inhibit TSP1 expression in colon cancer.

Notes: Abstract Five patients were admitted to our hospital because of classical heat stroke during the heat waves which attacked our country in the summers 1994 and 1995. The clinical and laboratory findings of all patients suggested the rapid progress of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Blood purification (BP) therapy, in addition to conventional treatment, was performed in three of the patients. Despite their disastrous general condition, all completely recovered or recovered sufficiently to be transferred to a rehabilitation hospital. Two additional patients were treated with conventional treatment only and both died in 1–3 days after admission.Clinical characteristics and laboratory findings on admission showed no differences between the cases receiving BP therapy and those not receiving BP therapy. These findings suggest that, in heat stroke patients, additional BP therapy may provide a better prognosis than conventional therapy only. These beneficial effects of BP may have been due mainly to the removal of proinflammatory cytokines related to heat stroke.

Notes: Abstract A fully automatic interpretation of an awake electroencephalogram (EEG) has been developed. Automatic integrative EEG interpretation consists of four main parts: quantitative EEG interpretation, EEG report making, preprocessing of EEG data, and adaptable EEG interpretation. Automatic integrative EEG interpretation reveals essentially the same findings as those of an electroencephalographer (EEGer), and is therefore applicable in clinical situations as an additional tool for the EEGer. The method has been developed through collaboration between the engineering field (Saga University) and the medical field (Kyoto University). This work can be understood as a realization of artificial intelligence. The procedure for this realization of artificial intelligence will also be applicable in other fields of systems control.
