Notes: The conceptual design of the front ends have been completed for the SPring-8 under construction in Japan. Standardizing the front ends and sharing the heat load among the beamline components are the philosophy for the design. Taking the beam properties into consideration, three types of the front ends which correspond to the undulator, multipole wiggler, and bending magnet beamlines are designed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Barley is the second most widely cultivated cereal on the island of Sardinia. It is grown for green fodder, grain and straw, all of which are used for animal feet. The cultivation of modem varieties is limited and many farmers grow local populations of the six-row landrace ‘S'orgiu sardu’. Twelve local populations (20 strains per population) were evaluated for 13 random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers, sisisozyme loci and five morphophenological traits. Results showed that Sardinian barley is characterized by a lax six-row spike and is. in general, a spring type. Isozyme polymorphism was delected for only two esterase loci (Est and Est 4). The genetic variation for all types of murkers, was found located mostly within population (about 84%, for isozymes aud morphaphenological traits and 89%, for RAPDs). This finding appears to confirm the hypothesis that the populations studied belong to the same land race called ‘S'orgiu sardu’ by farmers. A geographical differential ion between southern and northern populations was foand in relation to distinct environmental characteristics. Taking into account all types of marker 209 (90.5%) different genotypes were identified out of 231 individuals. The overall results confirm the high variability that can be found within landrace populations, underlining the value of landraccs as a source of genetic variation.

Notes: A two-dimensional ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) apparatus was constructed using a rotating-anode X-ray generator and a Bonse–Hart camera. In this camera, two sets of two channel-cut single crystals were used to collimate the X-ray beam in both the horizontal and the vertical planes. The measured intensity profile of the direct beam showed a high small-angle resolution in all directions on the detector plane. The full width at half-maximum was 17′′, indicating that the apparatus can be applied to structural analysis in the range up to 2 μm, even for directionally oriented samples. One- and two-dimensional USAXS profiles from colloidal silica powder agreed well with each other, showing that the desmearing procedure adopted in the previous one-dimensional USAXS experiments were justified.

Notes: Abstract The chemokines are members of a bipartite superfamily of soluble proteins that have been implicated in a wide range of acute and chronic inflammatory processes, as well as other immunoregulatory functions. Macrophage inflammatory protein-1 alpha (MIP-1α) belongs to the C-C subfamily of these chemokines and is primarily a potent chemoattractant and activator of monocytes. MIP-1α is also thought to play a role in host defence. We examined the expression of MIP-1α in normal lung, inflammatory lung tissue and lung cancer cells by the immunoperoxidase method using a MIP-1α monoclonal antibody. MIP-1α protein was found to be expressed not only by alveolar macrophages, but also by bronchial ciliated cells, hyperplastic alveolar type II cells and activated fibroblasts surrounding malignant tissue. Of 33 cases of lung cancer, 23 (70%) expressed MIP-1α. These observations suggest that lung cancer cells, non-neoplastic alveolar type II cells and fibroblasts can participate in inflammatory cell recruitment via the production of MIP-1α. Tumour derived MIP-α may also affect the interaction between lung cancer and host inflammatory cells.

Notes: Abstract  A study was conducted on a two-row/six-row cross of barley to (1) determine the yield potential, (2) detect epistasis and genetic correlations, (3) estimate the heritabilities of six agronomic traits, and (4) study the effect of the V locus on the agronomic traits in the barley cross. The effects of five other marker loci (Re2, s, R, Est1, and Est5) on the six agronomic traits were also studied. One hundred and ninety doubled-haploid (DH) lines were derived from a ‘Leger’/CI9831 cross using the bulbosum method. The DH lines and the two parents were tested for grain yield, test weight, seed weight, plant height, lodging, and heading/maturity at two locations in Eastern Canada in 1993. Additive×additive epistasis and genetic correlations were detected for some of the agronomic traits. Many of the heritability estimates were high; however, significant progress in yield improvement would be difficult to achieve because of a low mean yield of the DH lines. Under the growing conditions in Eastern Canada, six-row lines outyielded two-row by 20–27%. Six-row lines, however, were associated with low test weight, low seed weight, and severe lodging. Some two-row lines yielded higher than the two-row parent CI9831, but none of the six-row lines yielded higher than the six-row parent ‘Leger’. The R, s, and Est5 loci were associated with the six agronomic traits, but the Est1 locus was apparently not associated with the agronomic traits. The effect of the Re2 locus was probably due to its close linkage with the V locus. Further studies are needed to determine if superior six-row lines can be developed from two-row/six-row crosses.

Notes: Abstract  The rym3 (formerly designated ym3) gene conferring resistance to barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) is effective against all strains of the virus but up to now has not been mapped to any chromosome. We performed a linkage analysis, using DNA extracted from individually harvested mature leaves of 153 F2 plants derived from a cross between BaYMV-resistant cv ’Ishuku Shirazu’ carrying rym3 and susceptible cv ’Ko A’. Additionally, the F3 lines derived from F2 plants were grown in the BaYMV-infested field and examined for their reaction to BaYMV. Our results indicated that rym3 is located on the short arm of chromosome 5H and flanked by RFLP markers MWG28and ABG705A at distances of 7.2 and 11.7 cM, respectively. The chromosomal configuration estimated by DNA markers around rym3 and the utilization of these molecular markers for pyramiding with the BaYMV resistance genes in barley breeding programs are discussed.

Notes: Abstract. We treated a complete obstruction of the left mainstem bronchus due to nonresectable recurrent esophageal carcinoma with a combination of laser therapy, radiation therapy, and the placement of an expandable metallic stent. The patient survived 1 year after the first therapy, with good quality of life. We conclude that a combination of laser ablation, radiotherapy, and stent placement can improve survival and quality of life for the patients with complete malignant bronchial obstruction.

Notes: Abstract  A Chinese landrace of barley, Mokusekko 3, is unique in being completely resistant against all strains of barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV). The present investigation revealed that the resistance of Mokusekko 3 is governed by two recessive genes. As one of the resistance genes was known to be tightly linked with alleles at the Est complex locus, consisting of the Est1, Est2 and Est4 loci for esterase isozymes, each of the resistance genes could be separated by means of marker-assisted selection using an isozyme allelic combination as a marker. One of the resistance genes, ym1, is linked to K (hooded lemma) and gl3 (glossy leaf 3) with recombination values of 25.3% and 9.7% respectively, and these three genes are located in the order K-gl3-ym1 on chromosome 4. Another newly designated resistance gene, ym5, is linked to alleles at the Est complex locus and cu2 (curly growth 2), with recombination values of 1.9% and 19.5% respectively, in the order cu2-Est-ym5 from proximal to distal on the long arm of chromosome 3. The complete resistance of Mokusekko 3 is caused by combining two resistance genes, ym1 and ym5. However, almost all the “resistant” cultivars derived from crosses with Mokusekko 3 are susceptible to the recently detected strain BaYMV-III in Japan, since they contain only one resistance gene, ym5. Marker-assisted selection to combine resistance genes into a cultivar is discussed for the breeding of stabilizing resistance to BaYMV.
