Notes: Ammeline-melamine-formaldehyde resins (AMF Resins) containing 5-100 mol % of ammeline, were synthesized by polymerization of the preformed sodium salt of ammeline, melamine, and formaldehyde in basic medium by three methods. These resins, when cured, constitute a new class of thermosets. The rate of hydroxymethylation of the amino groups of the ammeline salt with formaldehyde was somewhat larger then that of the amino groups on melamine. At higher pH values ammeline insolubility was not a problem. The AMF resin composition was approximately equal to the mol ratio of the components originally charged. Both ammeline and melamine were consumed over the entire reaction period. Thus, it is possible to make approximately uniform random ammeline-melamine-formaldehyde resins (AMF) with any mol ratio of ammeline salt to melamine. By controlling the pH of the solution from which the resins were isolated, the (SINGLE BOND) O- Na+/(SINGLE BOND) OH ratio could be varied. Resin melting points varied widely with the mol fraction of ammeline and the (SINGLE BOND) O- Na+/(SINGLE BOND) OH ratio. AMF resin solubilities, shelf lives, cloud points, and water tolerance depended upon the method of preparation, pH, and other factors. The sodium salt of ammeline was hydroxymethylated in water more readily than ammeline. More highly methylolated ammeline species were readily formed in solution but upon precipitation only bis-N-hydroxymethylammeline was isolated. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The stoichiometry of a noncovalent, hydrogen-bonded supramolecular complex, hub(M)3·RCA3, was characterized using electrospray ionization from chloroform. The intact (1:3) complex was observed in the negative-ion mode as a Cl--bound species using Ph4PCl as the source of the charge donor. Collisionally and thermally induced dissociation of the (1:3) complex resulted in the simultaneous loss of all the three RCA units, indicating a cooperative binding of RCA units in the (1:3) complex. These results suggest that the attachment of small, organic-soluble ions may be a useful technique for mass spectrometric characterization of neutral supramolecular complexes that are stable or soluble only in non-polar organic solvents.

Notes: Flims of metal oxides, such as Ta2O5, Nb2O5, Al2O3, HfO2, ZrO2 and TiO2 have been fabricated by use of different precursor materials, deposition techniques and annealing techniques. Several analytical methods were applied to study the layers. New data of fundamental properties of these metal oxides are reported and related to practical features that are of importance in device design and manufacturing of advanced, highly integrated devices. This overview may facilitate the choice of an optimal combination of precursor material, deposition technique and corresponding annealing procedure for a specific application of these metal oxide films in microelectronics.

Notes: The reactions of [(Me3Si)3CLi2thf] with Me2MCl (M = Al, Ga) afford the mixed trialkylmetallanes [(Me3Si)3-CAlMe2·thf] (1) and [(Me3Si)3 CGaMe2·thf] (2) in high yields. The coordinated THF molecule of compound 2 can be removed by sublimation in vacuo to yield the solvent-free product [(Me3Si)3-CGaMe2] (3). Hydrolysis of compound 2 with one equivalent of water at 0°C gives the trimeric hydroxide [{(Me3Si)3CGaMe(μ-OH)}3] (4), while the reaction with two equivalents of water at room temperature yields the unusually stable gallium hydroxide-water complex [{(Me3Si)3CGaMe(OH)(μ-OH)MeGaC(SiMe3)3) H2O·2thf] (6). On heating, compound 6 is converted to the hydroxide [{(Me3Si)3C}4Ga4(μ-O)2(μ -OH)4] (5), which has a heteroadamantane-like core. The hydrolysis of compound 1 with one equivalent of water at - 25°C gives the dimeric hydroxide [{(Me3Si)3CAlMe(μ-OH)}2·2thf] (7), while the reaction with two equivalents of water results in the formation of the novel hydroxide [{(Me3Si)3C}4Al4(μ-O)2 (μ-OH)4] (8), which is isostructural to the gallium compound 6 with the adamantane-like structure. The molecular structures of compounds 1, 2, 4, 5·3THF, 6, 7 and 8·0.5 THF have been determined by X-ray structure analysis. Compound 7 is the first structurally characterised aluminium hydroxide containing methyl groups, and 8 is the smallest structurally characterised galloxane hydroxide described in literature.

Notes: A micellar electrokinetic chromatography method is presented for the determination of the partition coefficient for the distribution of nonpolar and moderately polar solutes between the micelle and the aqueous phases in aqueous micellar solutions. In comparison with the literature the method is, theoretically and experimentally, the most straightforward for this application. An equation is derived for the determination of the partition coefficient in a coated fused silica capillary, with neglible electroosmotic flow, from simple measurements of the migration times of solutes and a marker for micelle migration. The advantages and limitations of this method are discussed. The method is tested by using sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) surfactant and naphthalene, benzene, toluene, and phenol solutes. Micellar electrokinetic chromatography in coated columns isideally suited for the separation of hydrophobic solutes in aqueous samples.

Notes: The reaction of H2L1 and H2L2 with divalent metal ions leads to octanuclear bis(triple-helical) metal(II) complexes of the general composition [Zn8O2L26] (3) and [M8O2L16] (4: M = Cd2+; 5: M = Mn2+). NMR studies of the diamagnetic cadmium complex 4c show six equivalent ligands. Unambiguous characterisation of 5b was achieved by X-ray crystallographic analysis.

Notes: It is hypothesized that immobilized heparin exerts a dual role in blood coagulation. On the one hand, the heparinized surface is because of its dense negative charge, thought to initiate the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation. On the other hand, heparin is known as a potent anticoagulant drug. However, it remains to be seen how much contact-phase activation of factor XI contributes to thrombin formation and how this process is counterbalanced by which of the anti-protease activities of immobilized heparin. In the present study we examined the generation of factors XIa, IXa, and Xa, and thrombin in recalcified normal and antithrombin-depleted plasma exposed to polyacrylamide-graft polyurethane (PU) sheets modified by multipoint attachment of two different heparin species. One of them, HAH, contained the specific antithrombin binding sequence and the other one, NAH, had a low affinity for antithrombin and had no anticoagulant activity. Our data demonstrate that in contrast to PU, PU-NAH and PU-HAH are strong mediators of factor XIa and factor IXa formation in normal and antithrombin-deficient plasma. Interestingly, compared to PU-HAH and PU-NAH, thrombin formation was only slightly diminished in antithrombin-deficient plasma exposed to PU. In contrast, thrombin formation was dramatically delayed and diminished in normal plasma exposed to PU-HAH. These findings indicate that very low amounts of factor XIa apparently suffice to induce significant amounts of thrombin. In this sense, heparinized surfaces are highly thrombogenic, but our data also indicate that this activity is effectively counterbalanced by the anti-thrombin activity of the immobilized anti-coagulant species of heparin. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: The electron donating properties of the drugs, amiodarone, desethylamiodarone, promethazine and codeine have been studied using the electrochemical technique of conductivity titration, complemented by electronic absorption spectroscopy. All were found to form charge transfer complexes in vitro with the electron acceptor iodine in acetonitrile. A quantitative explanation has been proposed to account for the observed temperature dependence of the conductivity. This is based on consideration of the opposing effects of charge mobility and the temperature-dependent donor-acceptor equilibrium. An assessment of the use of the hydrochloride form, instead of free base, of drugs in examining the model systems for the study of drug donor-acceptor interactions is also presented.

Notes: Three HRGC systems (1: 30m DB-XLB capillary with MS-SIM detection; 2: 60m DB-XLB capillary with full-scan, ion-trap MS detection; and 3: Parallel dual-column DB-17 and series-coupled HP5/HT5 with ECD detection) were used to completely characterize multiple lots of 8 different-numbered Aroclor mixtures by quantitative calibration against 9 solutions containing primary standards of all 209 PCB congeners. Despite lower absolute sensitivity and more Aroclor congener coelutions than the dual-column ECD system, the MS systems enabled measurement of more congeners per Aroclor since their greater linear response range did not require dilution of samples and standards. Pairs of different lots of Aroclors 1248 and 1254 displayed markedly different proportions of congeners, and the 1254 pair displayed strong differences in the extent of ortho-chlorine substitution. The tables of congener weight percent distributions among Aroclors are more comprehensive and quantitatively precise than those of prior publications. However, the limitations of single-level calibration precluded measurement of all congeners to the ±10% accuracy desirable for establishing these Aroclors as secondary standards for comprehensive, quantitative congener-specific PCB analysis.
