Notes: Psychologically athletic performance is a multiplicative function of intrapersonal (for example, intrinsic motivation) and interpersonal (for example, social support) factors. It is theorized that the layer immediately surrounding an athlete's inner core of psychological functioning consists of 4 intrapersonal factors: self-motivation, cognitive capacity and coping skills, affective orientation and mental training skills. The layer surrounding these factors is comprised of interpersonal factors, such as social support and the athlete-coach relationship. A theoretical model was advanced to show that competition-generated intrinsic motivation predisposition and social support are the two main properties of the athletic competition context that buffer against increased athletic and life stress. If such buffering effects occur, athletes' physical and psychological capacity is maintained or even enhanced. This in turn promotes continued competitive athletic participation and performance. Maximization of psychological conditions for successful performance requires that coaches foster athletes' intrapersonal and interpersonal psychosocial resources by serving as facilitators of their autonomous self-regulation rather than as controllers of their goals and behaviors.

Notes: The influence of starch addition on the elastic properties of fish-meat gel was studied by measuring compression and stress relaxation properties and dynamic viscoelasticity. Samples with pregelatinized starch, with and without raw starch, and processed starch were used. Fish-meat gels with starch showed a higher modulus value at 80°C than at 90°C. The gelatinization of starch appeared to be prevented by surimi protein in the fish-meat gel, and so the sample that gelled at 90°C had a lower “packing effect” than the sample that gelled at 80°C. The optimum heating temperature indicated a higher “packing effect” on the surimi protein.

Notes: The influence of starch addition on the elastic properties of fish-meat gel was studied by measuring dynamic viscoelasticity, microscopic observation, and compression tests. Samples with pregelatinized starch, and with and without raw starch were studied. The temperature dependence varied according to the size of the starch granules. Starch granule-size/temperature dependence in the free swellable state was higher than in the fish-meat sol (surimi) protein in the heating process. Results indicated that raw starch affected the surimi protein network with a possible “packing effect” of starch granules, which increased the elastic modulus of the fish-meat gel.

Notes: The purpose of this study is to determine whether leisure behavior, leisure satisfaction, leisure attitude, and self-determination are associated with decreased burnout. A systematic stratified random sample of 438 clergy (55% return rate) was used to collect the data. In path analysis, results indicate that leisure behavior and leisure satisfaction had an inverse effect on all 3 components of burnout, while leisure attitude had no effect. Self-determination predisposition contributed inversely to 2 components of burnout. Similarly, age and years in ministry had a direct, inverse relationship with the emotional exhaustion and depersonalization dimensions of burnout. Number of years employed with the present church was also negatively related to emotional exhaustion. All 3 variables (age, years in ministry, and years with the present church) were positively associated with leisure behavior. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

Notes: Abstract. Osteoporosis after gastrectomy is a common clinical disorder. In gastrectomized patients, decreased gastric acidity may be associated with impaired calcium absorption. This study was undertaken to determine whether patients with chronic use of H2-receptor antagonists (HRA) had demonstrable decreases in bone mineral density (BMD). Thirty-three patients taking cimetidine, ranitidine, or famotidine for more than 2 years were analyzed. We measured BMD of L2–L4 using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Osteoporosis (BMD less than 0.70 g/cm2) was found only in three patients (9%). As compared with healthy controls, age- and sex-matched BMD ranged from 74.4% to 132.9%, with a mean of 97.0%, and was not influenced by the period of HRA use (〈5 years versus 〉5 years or more). Although the age- and sex-matched BMD was different among the kinds of HRA (98.6% for cimetidine, 101.3% for ranitidine, and 85.5% for famotidine), the relationship between the BMD and type of drug was not significant by multivariate analysis. These results indicate that chronic use of HRA has little influence on the degree of BMD, and suggest that decreased gastric acidity is not always associated with osteoporosis after gastrectomy.

Notes: Abstract. Advances in imaging techniques have made preoperative diagnosis of splenic tumors possible. A case of successful laparoscopic splenectomy for splenic hamartoma is described here and the indications of this technique are discussed.

Notes: Application of the particulate microporous glass membrane (SPG) was extended to the synthesis of fairly monodisperse poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microspheres. Hydrophilic monomers have been believed to yield polymer particles of a broad size distribution when the SPG technique was employed. This difficulty was overcome by adopting the droplet swelling technique. The primary uniform emulsion composed of a mixture of hydrophobic diluent (and/or monomer), cosurfactant, and initiator was prepared with an SPG membrane and was allowed to absorb MMA (and diluent) under the principle of the degradative diffusion process from droplets in the secondary emulsion. The coefficient of variation of PMMA spheres was around 10%. Porous PMMA spheres possessing up to 185 m2/g of specific surface area were obtained as well as one-eyed spheres and smooth and solid spheres. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
