Notes: An aluminum-sensitive mutant was isolated by chemical mutagenesis using 1-methyl-3-nitro-1-nitrosoguanidine. Although this mutant of Pseudomonas fluorescens was susceptible to aluminum, it did respond in a manner analogous to the wild-type when challenged with either Ca2+, or Ga3+ or Zn2+. However, the aluminum-sensitive mutant did not grow in media with iron. Calcium detoxification appeared to be attained by the elaboration of calcite, a detoxification strategy observed in the wild-type Pseudomonas fluorescens. There was a 40% diminution in biomass when the mutant was cultured in a control medium as compared to the wild-type. The aluminum-sensitive mutant had a characteristic yellow coloration. Electrophoretic analyses of the soluble cellular extract revealed numerous variations between the aluminum-sensitive mutant and wild-type Pseudomonas fluorescens. Bands corresponding to approximate molecular masses of 158 kDa, 116 kDa, 97 kDa, 55 kDa, and 19 kDa were absent in the aluminum-sensitive mutant. Furthermore, bands attributable to molecular masses of 90 kDa and 15 kDa were only evident in the aluminum-sensitive Pseudomonas. It appears that the chemical mutagenesis may have affected only aluminum and iron(III) metabolism in this organism.

Notes: Abstract PURPOSE: The study contained herein was undertaken to establish the incidence of small-bowel obstruction, adhesiolysis for obstruction, and additional abdominal surgery after open colorectal and general surgery. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed using patient-specific Health Care Financing Administration data to evaluate a random 5 percent sample of all Medicare patients who underwent surgery in 1993. Of these, 18,912 patients had an index abdominal procedure. Two-year follow-up data documented outcomes of hospitalizations with obstruction, adhesiolysis for obstruction, and/or additional open colorectal or general surgery. RESULTS: Within two years of incision, excision, and anastomosis of intestine (International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-9 code 45), 14.3 percent of patients had obstructions, 2.6 percent required adhesiolysis for obstructions, and 12.9 percent underwent additional open colorectal or general surgery. After other operations of intestine (ICD code 46), 17 percent of patients had obstructions, 3.1 percent required adhesiolysis for obstructions, and 20.2 percent underwent additional open colorectal or general surgery. After operations of rectum, rectosigmoid, and perirectal tissue (ICD code 48), 15.3 percent of patients had obstructions, 5.1 percent required adhesiolysis for obstructions, and 16.4 percent underwent additional open colorectal or general surgery. After other operations on the abdominal region (ICD code 54), 12.4 percent of patients had obstructions, 2.3 percent required adhesiolysis for obstructions, and 8.8 percent underwent additional open colorectal or general surgery. CONCLUSIONS: In this retrospective study of Medicare patients, we learned that bowel obstruction, adhesiolysis for obstructions, and additional abdominal surgery occurred more often after abdominal surgery than was previously published.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract. Today traditional information systems and deductive systems are modeled and implemented separately. Most users, however, demand integrated systems which meet their everyday information needs and have deductive capabilities as well. The well-known Entity-Relationship approach to conceptual data modeling is extended to cover modeling of such systems. In addition, a classification of derivable data is given which allows the analyst to decide which derivable data should be included in the conceptual schema.
Notes: Zusammenfassung.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract. Redundant components in Entity-Relationship schemata result in waste of storage space and errors in the use of the databases gained from them. There is a strong connection between schema redundancy and the concept of derivable components as redundant components are always derivable. On the other hand, not every derivable component is a redundant one. First the relationship between redundant and derivable components is discussed and a classification is introduced which allows the designer to separate superfluous components from others. Afterwards, an important class of derivable components, composition of relationship sets, is presented in its various forms. In addition, methods are suggested which might help to detect compositions.
Notes: Zusammenfassung.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary We report on a 13-month-old girl who developed Kasabach-Merritt syndrome because of sinusoidal hemangiomatosis of the spleen. The combination of consumption coagulopathy and tumor of the spleen suggested a vascular process. Discussion: For a tumor of the spleen, sinusoidal hemangiomatosis has to be considered as differential diagnosis. Splenectomy is the treatment of choice when consumption coagulopathy occurs.

Notes: Abstract This case report describes the delayed presentation of bilateral Morgagni herniae in a 4 1/2-year-old boy with Down's syndrome. The authors emphasize the difficulties in establishing the diagnosis, although ultrasonography appears to be valu‐able. A review of the literature suggests an association between Morgagni hernias and trisomy 21.

Notes: Abstract Thin Pd films of 5–50nm thickness are deposited on glass substrates under UHV conditions and are subsequently covered step by step with CO at 77 or 293 K. The resistivity increases linearly with the number of adsorbed CO molecules in the initial stages of adsorption while a saturation value develops at higher coverages. The thickness dependence of the linear increase can be quantitatively interpreted with the help of the scattering hypothesis. The scattering cross section is calculated to beA=1.6Å2 in good agreement with the experimental evidence.

Notes: Abstract. An antibody raised against a peptide based on the C-terminal derived amino acid sequence from a cloned Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) gene, Rdl (resistant to dieldrin), was used to investigate localization of a GABA receptor subunit in adult male D. melanogaster. Many regions in the brain and thoracic ganglia were stained with this antibody. For example, staining was detected in the medulla, lobula and lobular plate optic neurpiles. Also stained were the antennal lobe glomeruli, the ellipsoid body of the central complex and the mushroom bodies. These results suggest possible roles for an RDL-like GABA receptor subunit in the processing of olfactory, visual and mechanosensory information in the nervous system of D. melanogaster.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Varicophlebitis is the most important acute complication of a varicosed long and/or short saphenous vein. The initial extent and progression of the ascending varicophlebitis can be determined, either by duplex scanning or phlebography. By ascending, an extensive thrombus can enter the deep veins through the respective junctional valve (in the groin or at the knee) or via insufficient perforating veins. In view of pulmonary embolism as a possible complication, a clinically relevant classification of this syndrome appears useful. Stage I includes varicophlebitis without involvement of the respective junctional valve or deep veins. In stage II, the cranial portion of the thrombus has reached the respective junctional valves of the long or short shapenous vein. In stage III, the thrombus has entered the deep veins via these valves. In stage IV, the thrombus has reached the deep system via insufficient perforating veins. Stages I and IV should be treated conservatively, and the varicous veins should not be excised until after the acute phase. Stage II and III should be considered an indication for immediate surgery. The surgical strategy consists of crossectomy, resection of the saphenous vein without stripping, radical excision of all varicous veins and ligature of insufficient perforating veins. In stage III, the thrombectomy of the deep veins using the Fogarthy procedure must be carried out before any other measures are taken. The surgical strategy is similar for the short saphenous vein. In stage I disease, early surgery to alleviate local pain and infection, thus hindering recurrence and decreasing morbidity, should be considered.
