Notes: We recorded photoelectron spectra of antimony Sb−N=2–9 and of bismuth clusters Bi−N=2–9 with a photon energy of 4.03 eV, as well as of Bi−N=2–21 with a photon energy of 5.0 eV. The experimentally determined photoelectron thresholds and peak positions of Sb−N=2–5 and Bi−N=2–5 are compared with the results of ab initio density-functional (LCAO) calculations. The agreement between the experimental thresholds and the calculated adiabatic electron affinities, as well as between the first maxima in the spectra and the calculated vertical detachment energies is fair to good for the antimony clusters and qualitative for the bismuth systems. For the calculation of the ionization (detachment) energies we determined for the neutral and anionic clusters the most stable structures by LCAO calculations. In particular, the tetramer cluster anions have a "roof'' structure, while the negatively charged pentamers are planar rings [with similarities to the (C5H5)− anion]; positive and negative trimers are nonlinear. Furthermore, the ionization energies and affinities of larger antimony and bismuth clusters are discussed qualitatively and compared to jellium calculations of Seidl and Brack. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Irradiating intense femtosecond laser pulses on a glass sample containing silver nanoparticles results in permanent sample color changes if the laser wavelength is in the region of the particles' surface plasmon resonance. In particular, even a single pulse of appropriate intensity can modify the initially isotropic extinction of glass containing spherical particles to a dichroic sample behavior in the irradiated area. This observation is interpreted as ultrafast particle deformation induced by the laser pulse creating nonspherical particles of uniform orientation. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In view of the different terminology for salivary gland tumours with giant cells, eleven cases were analysed by histopathology and immunocytochemistry. Four cases (three pleomorphic adenomas, one carcinosarcoma in a pleomorphic adenoma) were classified as having a foreign-body giant cell reaction, and five cases (two mucoepidermoid carcinomas, one acinic cell carcinoma, two carcinomas in pleomorphic adenomas) as having a sarcomatoid osteoclast-like giant cell reaction. In two further cases a giant cell tumour and a giant cell granuloma were associated with carcinomas in pleomorphic adenomas. All giant cells showed characteristic expression of CD68 as a typical marker for histiocytes and macrophages with their origin in mononuclear haematopoetic stem cells. There was no evidence for an epithelial origin of the giant cells because all those examined had a negative reaction to cytokeratin. Foreign-body cells were characterized by cytoplasmic vacuoles and irregularly dispersed nuclei. They showed a focally circumscribed reaction mostly outside the connective tissue pseudocapsule of the tumours. The sarcomatoid osteoclast-like giant cell reactions in carcinomas were distinctly intermingled with the carcinomatous patterns. In contrast, the associated osteoclast-like giant cell tumour was distinctly separate from the salivary gland tumour tissue and was composed of numerous larger osteoclast-like giant cells with a greater number of nuclei (more than 20): these giant cells were uniformly distributed throughout the tumour tissue. The giant cell granuloma was also separate from the carcinoma and was composed of nests of smaller, more irregularly distributed giant cells.

Description / Table of Contents: Cranial and cervical chordomas can spread by para- or retropharyngeal extension up to the region of the salivary glands or the jaw and may simulate a tumor of the salivary glands or jaw. In occasional cases, because the tumors often expand slowly, months or years may pass between the first clinical symptoms and diagnosis. Diagnostic problems exist in differentiating these chordomas from pleomorphic adenoma, mucinous carcinoma, or chondrosarcoma. Ten relevant observations of typical cranial and cervical chordomas (Salivary Gland Register Hamburg 1965–1996) were analyzed more closely by pathohistological and immunohistochemical means. The exact diagnosis is based upon the evidence of blown-up, bubble-like („physaliform“) cells which contain mucus drops in a vacuolized cytoplasm and are surrounded by extensive areas of mucoid mucus. The pattern of immunohistochemistry is characterized by the multifold expression of cytokeratin, vimentin, and EMA. The differential diagnosis is discussed with reference to further types of chordoma (chondroid chordoma, dedifferentiated chordoma with spindle cell sarcomatous transformation), chondrosarcoma, pleomorphic adenoma, and mucus-producing carcinoma.

Description / Table of Contents: Diagnostic pitfalls exist when benign salivary gland diseases are mistakenly classified as malignant, with consequences for treatment and prognosis. Examples are necrotizing sialometaplasia, metaplastic Warthin tumour and sclerosing polycystic sialadenopathy. The proper diagnosis is of eminent importance to distinguish cases of primary tumours that have developed in salivary glands or their lymph nodes from cases of extraglandular tumours with metastases in these glands or their nodes. In these cases clinical data and additional immunocytochemical methods are necessary to clarify the exact diagnosis, especially when the primary salivary gland tumours have a structure largely identical to the metastases (e.g. squamous cell carcinoma). Nasopharyngeal or cervical chordomas can be mistaken for pleomorphic adenoma or mucinous adenocarcinoma. The initial stage of malignant MALT lymphomas in association with Sjögren’s syndrome demands identification of clonal rearrangement for therapeutic implication. The diagnostic criteria for proper classification are analysed in detail.

Notes: Abstract  An 8-year-old girl had a painless circumscribed nodule in the right parotid gland for 4 weeks. A tumour (1.3 cm diameter) within the salivary gland parenchyma showed small cystic spaces with horn-like material macroscopically. The tumour tissue contained solid squamous cell formations and cystic spaces limited by multilayered squamous epithelium and covered by layers of ortho- and parakeratotic cells. The cystic spaces contained keratotic lamellae. In some areas pin-like epithelial proliferations were seen. All epithelial cells were characterized by uniform nuclei, and no atypical mitoses were seen. Keratinizated masses with partial calcification were occasionally located in the interstitial tissue and replaced by multinucleated giant cells. The tumour was classified as a choristoma and resembled a trichoadenoma. The ectodermally derived oral and salivary gland epithelium may be the source of skin-like or adnexal tumours.

Notes: 82 , M = Sc, Y, La) are discussed. The first 13C hyperfine structure has been analyzed in detail and at least seven electronically different groups of carbon atoms could be assigned by simulations of the ESR spectra. The strong similarity of the 13C satellite structure suggests the preference of one cage isomer for the scandium group C82 endohedrals. The geometric structure and the electronic structure of all nine fullerene cage isomers of La@C82 were studied by approximate density-functional-based theoretical calculations. A C3v isomer was found as the most stable one. The manifold of 13C hyperfine coupling constants could be interpreted on the basis of the calculated spin density distributions.

Notes: \chem{[C_{60}]_{\chemindex{n}}} -oligomers ( n=2 , 3 , and 4 ) as well as \chem{C_{60}} dimers partially bridged by oxygen atoms or a \chem{NH} group. The applicability of the scheme for finding the ground state of these systems was carefully checked against more sophisticated methods including an all-electron, self-consistent (SCF) scheme based on the local-density-approximation (LDA), and the recently developed generalized-gradient approximation (GGA). We present Raman intensities for the vibrations of the \chem{C_{60}} oligomers, obtained in the framework of the bond polarization model, and compare with recent experimental data.
