Notes: Magnetic phase transition in weak random anisotropy magnets amorphous a-HoFe and ErFe thin films with "in-plane" coherent anisotropy are studied by measurements of temperature (T) dependence of ac susceptibility. We observed distinct difference in the ac susceptibilities between samples with the coherent anisotropy and without the coherent anisotropy; double transition behavior from paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic (FWA) to correlated spin-glass-like is induced by the coherent "in-plane" anisotropy field larger than about 8 kOe even without H. Such a behavior is also observed in a-DyGdFe with "perpendicular" coherent anisotropy. But, larger coherent anisotropy field than about 20 kOe is needed to induce the FWA state, which may arise from the symmetry difference in the coherent anisotropy. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A large Faraday rotation is reported for Rh4+-substituted magnetic garnets in the near-infrared wavelength region. The Faraday rotation at 0.9 μm is about seven times larger than that in yttrium iron garnet by substituting Rh4+ ions of only 0.13 per formula unit at room temperature. From the electronic state calculations of a (Rh4+O62−)8− octahedral cluster performed by using an unrestricted self-consistent field–scattering wave–X α method, the origin of the Faraday rotation is attributable to the charge transfer transitions of an electron from O 2p to Rh 4d orbitals, or t1un(2p)→t2g*(4d) and t2un(2p)→t2g*(4d) transitions. Based on this assignment, the Faraday rotation spectrum is calculated by taking into account the spin–orbit interaction and the molecular field from iron magnetizations in the magnetic garnet. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Eleven of 16 samples of rice on sale in rice shops and supermarkets in Hong Kong contained Bacillus cereus. Although B. cereus counts did not exceed 100 bacteria/g in most of the positive samples, a sample of Thai red rice and a poor quality rice originating from China contained between 300 to 1000 cells/g and 104 to 2×105 cells/g, respectively. Nine strains produced an enterotoxin responsible for the diarrhoeal-type B. cereus food poisoning and seven of these strains also produced a haemolysin (haemolysin BL), a dermonecrotic vascular permeability factor which may be a virulence determinant in diarrhoeal illness caused by this bacterium.
