Notes: Abstract A 15-month-old girl with Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), Letterer-Siwe disease, was referred to our hospital in 1984. Whilst on treatment with cytotoxic drugs, a perirenal mass was detected and hydronephrosis became evident when she was 29 months old. Percutaneous nephrostomy tubes were placed in the pelvis, bilaterally and replaced every 6 months. The mass was not completely controlled and chronic pyelonephritis continued. Biopsy of the mass convoluted kidney hilus revealed histiocytic invasion. Although multiple organ systems are involved in LCH and abdominal malignant tumours may be accompanied by hydronephrosis, to our knowledge, this is the first case report of abdominal LCH and the ensuing hydronephrosis. Percutaneous nephrostomy tubes proved useful, but more convenient, less painful and infection-limited approaches need to be designed.

Notes: Abstract The Eker rat hereditary renal carcinoma is an excellent example of a Mendelian dominant predisposition to a specific cancer in an experimental animal. We recently reported that a germline insertion in the rat homologue of the human tuberous sclerosis (TSC2) gene gives rise to the dominantly inherited cancer in the Eker rat model. The function of theTSC2/Tsc2 gene product (called “tuberine” in the human case) is not yet understood, although it contains a short amino acid sequence homologous to theras family GTPase-activating proteins (GAP3). In the study, we isolated subtracted cDNA clones having increased expression in eker renal carcinoma cells, using a modified representational difference analysis method to search for additional genes specifically involved in renal carcinogenesis. Here we identified four genes: the third component of the complement (C3) gene, thefos-related antigen 1 (fra-1) gene, an unknown gene (designated as beingexpressed inrenalcarcinoma:erc) and the calpactine I heavy-chain (Annexin II) gene.

Notes: Abstract An experimental model of blockage of the mesenteric lymphatic flow (MLF) in rats was designed, and morphologic changes of mesenteric lymphatic vessels (MLV) and lymph nodes were investigated by mesenteric lymphangiography and histopathologic examination. Body weight in rats with blockage of MLF did not increase normally. Mesenteric lymphangiography revealed dilation of the MLV, reverse flow into the peripheral MLV, and leakage of contrast medium, resulting in chylous ascites. Remarkable dilation of the lymphatic sinuses and dilated and increased rough endoplasmic reticulum in lymphocytes in the mesenteric lymph nodes due to lymph stagnation were observed by light and electron microscopic examination, respectively.

Notes: Abstract We report a rare case of transitional-cell carcinoma of the bladder in an 18-year-old girl with intermittent hematuria. The tumor was diagnosed through the cystogram phase of the excretory urogram and bladder ultrasound. Transurethral resection (TUR) of the tumor was performed. As most tumors are low-grade and low-stage and are associated with an excellent prognosis, endoscopic TUR is the preferred therapeutic measure. However, recurrence as well as death have been reported in this age group. These patients should be followed carefully, similar to adult patients.

Notes: Summary Reversed-phase ion-pair HPLC with fluorimetric detectors connected in series was studied for the simultaneous determination of two tetrahydro-β-carbolines and two β-carbolines. After additon of internal standards the samples were reacted with fluorescamine, and then subjected to serial extractions to remove their precursor (tryptamine) from the analytical system. This treatment not only suppressed the artefactual formation of tetrahydro-β-carbolines and β-carbolines during analysis, but also effectively purified them. Under optimum conditions, using trifluoroacetic acid as counter ion, all analytes were separated within 14 min and without major interfering peaks. The quantitative ranges were 0.25–80.0 ng mL−1 for both tetrahydro-β-carbolines and 0.1–30.0 ng mL−1 for both β-carbolines. Replicate spiking experiments showed that recovery from most of the samples tested was over 90% and the relative standard deviation ranged from 0.7 to 10.4% within and between assays. The proposed method was applicable to various materials such as soy sauce, vinegar, ketchup, tabasco, beer, wine, sake, whisky, brandy, cows' milk, coffee, cocoa, cheese, cigarette smoke and urine.
