    Notes: We have investigated electrical and optical properties of the high-conductivity layers formed in both undoped and B-doped diamond films prepared by chemical vapor deposition. It is found that both hydrogenated undoped and B-doped diamond films have high-concentration holes of ∼1018 cm−3 at 297 K. These films exhibit little temperature dependence of the hole concentration between 120 and 400 K, while that of the oxidized B-doped film has a strong temperature dependence with an activation energy 0.38 eV. The Hall mobility of all the hydrogenated films of ∼30 cm2/Vs at 297 K is one to two orders of magnitude smaller than that of the oxidized B-doped film and increases with increasing temperature. The I−V characteristics of Al–Schottky contacts to the hydrogenated undoped film show excellent rectification properties and the temperature dependence of their forward characteristics is well explained by a junction theory inclusive of the tunneling process, i.e., thermionic-field emission theory, indicating that the depletion layer becomes thin due to high-density space charge in the depletion layer. We have also found a broad cathodoluminescence peak at around 540 nm in the hydrogenated films which disappears with subsequent oxidation treatment, indicating the existence of hydrogen-related gap states in the subsurface region of as-deposited homoepitaxial diamond films. High density hydrogen is detected in the subsurface region of the hydrogenated films by secondary ion mass spectroscopy. These experimental results suggest the existence of hydrogen-induced shallow acceptors in the surface region of as-deposited (hydrogenated) diamond films and that the difference between the hydrogenated and the oxidized films observed in both electrical and optical properties originates from hydrogen incorporated in the subsurface region. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We found hydrogen-related luminescence in the subsurface region of chemical vapor deposited homoepitaxial diamond films by means of cathodoluminescence. A specific broad peak at around 540 nm is observed in the hydrogenated films, but not in the conventional oxidized films. The gap states related to the peak observed at around 540 nm are found to exist spatially in the surface region. The fact is consistent with the hydrogen distribution previously determined by secondary ion mass spectroscopy. The result indicates the existence of hydrogen-related luminescent states in the subsurface region of as-deposited homoepitaxial diamond films. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have observed strong emission lines at 5.27 and 5.12 eV at room temperature in cathodoluminescence spectra from homoepitaxial diamond films grown by step-flow mode prepared with microwave plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition. The temperature dependence of integrated intensity of the emission lines indicates that they are attributed to free-exciton recombination radiation associated with a transverse optical phonon and its replica. These results have demonstrated the superior crystalline quality of the homoepitaxial diamond films grown by the step-flow mode. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract  Objective. To identify the characteristic MRI findings of chronic expanding hematoma correlated with the pathology. Design and patients. Three patients who had a chronic expanding hematoma involving the musculoskeletal system were reviewed retrospectively. Results and conclusion. Huge soft tissue masses suggestive of malignancy with destruction of the bony structure were revealed on radiography and computed tomography. MRI showed the masses to exhibit heterogeneous signal intensity on both T1- and T2-weighted images with a peripheral rim of low signal intensity, reflecting the central zones of fluid collection due to fresh and altered blood with a wall of collagenous fibrous tissue. These MRI findings were seen in all three patients and are considered to be characteristic; they assist in differentiation from neoplasm in consideration of the history of trauma or surgery.
