Notes: Abstract  This paper describes an inverse analysis method using hierarchical neural networks and computational mechanics, and its application to the quantitative nondestructive evaluation with the ultrasonic method. The present method consists of three subprocesses. First, by parametrically changing the location and size of a defect hidden in solid, elastic wave propagation in the solid is calculated with the dynamic finite element method. Second, the back-propagation neural network is trained using the calculated relationships between the defect parameters and the dynamic responses of solid surface. Finally, the trained network is utilized to determine appropriate defect parameters from some measured dynamic responses of solid surface. The accuracy and efficiency of the present method are discussed in detail through the identification of size and location of a defect hidden in solid.

Notes: We have observed spectra of lithium-like oxygen and carbon ions from the WT-3 tokamak plasma with an XUV spectrometer. On the basis of the branching ratios to visible UV spectral lines and the collisional-radiative model calculation for excited level populations, we have determined the absolute sensitivity of the spectrometer from 11.5 through 31.2 nm. From the line intensities emitted from the scrape-off layer plasma, we have estimated the charge exchange recombination rate coefficients of helium-like oxygen ions colliding with neutral hydrogen atoms or molecules. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A photovoltaic cell with carbonaceous thin film/n-type silicon (C/n-Si) was fabricated utilizing a process in which a carbonaceous thin film was deposited on an n-type silicon substrate by chemical-vapor deposition of 2,5-dimethyl-p-benzoquinone at 500 °C. Under illumination of 15 mW cm−2 light with wavelengths between 400 and 800 nm (xenon arc lamp), a power conversion efficiency (η) of 6.45% was achieved from this photovoltaic cell. This C/n-Si cell has shown a normalized short-circuit-current efficiency of more than 0.85 under illumination of 30 μW cm−2 monochromatic light from 500 to 950 nm. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The junction capacitance for a carbonaceous thin-film/n-type silicon layer photovoltaic cell made by chemical vapor deposition of 2,5-dimethyl-p-benzoquinone on a silicon substrate at 500 °C was measured, and an energy band diagram for this junction was sought out. The result confirms that the carbonaceous thin-film/n-type silicon junction is a heterotype junction. Its junction barrier is about 0.54 eV. This junction shows a depletion layer of about 1.1 μm in thickness at zero bias voltage, and most all of which was established in the silicon substrate. A work function of about 5.0 eV for the carbonaceous film was estimated based on the energy-band diagram of this junction. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A photovoltaic cell with carbonaceous thin film/n-type silicon (C/n-Si) was fabricated. The carbonaceous thin film was deposited on an n-type single-crystal-silicon substrate by chemical-vapor deposition of 2,5-dimethyl-p-benzoquinone at 500 °C. Without light irradiation, the photovoltaic cell displayed an almost perfect rectifying current–voltage characteristic. Under illumination of 15 mW cm−2 light with wavelengths between 400 and 800 nm similar to the solar light, it generated 2.73 mA cm−2 of short-circuit and 325 mV of open-circuit voltage. With the same light condition, a power conversion efficiency of 3.80% and a fill factor value of 0.65 were achieved. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An algorithm for domain partitioning with iterative load balancing is presented. A recursive graph labeling scheme is used to distribute elements among subdomains at each iteration. Both graph distance information and information about neighbor vertices are employed during the labeling process. Element quantities for balanced subdomains are predicted, solving the algebraic load balancing problem after each iteration. The same graph labeling scheme with slight modifications is applied to node renumbering inside subdomains. The proposed algorithm is especially suitable for load balancing when a direct method is used for subdomain condensation and the evaluation of cost function is time consuming. Several examples of optimized partitioning of irregular and regular meshes show that load balancing can be achieved with one to three iterations.

Notes: Summary The clinical effect of combination therapy with high doses of intravenous nicardipine and intra-arterial infusion of papaverine on symptomatic vasospasm after subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) was analysed retrospectively. In 66 of 122 patients who underwent early aneurysm surgery between 1990 and 1993, the intracranial haemodynamics were documented by transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasonography. 33 of these 66 patients received high dose nicar-dipine intravenously (Group I); the other 33 patients were not treated with calcium antagonists (Group II). Symptomatic vasospasm occurred in 6 Group I patients (18%) and in 13 (39%) in Group II patients. All 19 symptomatic patients received an intra-arterial infusion of papaverine; 15 patients (79%) responded well to this therapy and the symptoms were reversed quickly. Although the mean flow velocity (MFV) was not different between the two groups, it was reduced significantly after papverine infusion. Our retrospective analysis suggests that symptomatic vasospasm can be treated effectively with the combination of intravenous high dose nicardipine and intra-arterial infusion of papaverine, and that the correct timing of the infusions is crucial.

Notes: Summary We evaluated the effect of intra-arterially infused papaverine solutions of various concentrations on cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid haemorrhage. A total of 90 vascular territories in 46 patients with symptomatic cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid haemorrhage were treated with intra-arterial infusions of papaverine. In all patients, papaverine was infused at the top of the internal carotid artery (ICA). Of the 90 vascular territories, 30 vascular territories in 14 patients were treated with an infusion of 0.1–0.2% (weight/volume) papaverine (Group 1), 30 vascular territories in 16 patients were treated with a 0.4% (w/v) papaverine infusion (Group 2), and 30 vascular territories in 16 patients were treated with an infusion of 0.8–2.0% (w/v) papaverine (Group 3). Among the three groups, we compared the vasodilatory effects of papaverine by assessing the angiographical and clinical improvements following the treatment. When 0.4% (w/v) papaverine was infused, 24 vascular territories (80%) were successfully dilated and 7 patients (44%) showed a marked reversal of neurological deficits due to vasospasm. Therefore, 80 mg/20 ml (0.4% (w/v)) papaverine infused over a 10-minute period proved to be a beneficial concentration. Transient focal neurological deficits due to the infusion of papaverine occurred in 1 Group 1 patient (7%), 1 Group 2 patient (6%), and 7 Group 3 patients (44%). Highly concentrated papaverine had a higher risk of temporary deterioration. In conclusion, the papaverine concentration of 0.4% (w/v) infused at the top of the ICA was a safe and adequate concentration for treating cerebral vasospasm.

Notes: Abstract. We investigated the effects of conjugated estrogens as an add-back replacement drug, incadronate sodium as a bisphosphonate, and alfacalcidol as a vitamin D3 analog on femoral bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) in female rats chronically treated with the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist leuprorelin acetate. The chemical castration of the rats by the administration of GnRH agonist for 16 weeks reduced the BMD values to 92.3%, 91.3%, and 93.3% of those of the normal control animals in the whole femur, metaphysis, and diaphysis of the femur, respectively. The BMC value was decreased to 91.0% of that of the normal control animals by the chronic GnRH agonist treatment. However, a simultaneous 8-week administration of conjugated estrogens, bisphosphonate, and vitamin D3 analog markedly augmented the BMC values to 110.3%, 110.1%, and 114.4%, respectively, of those in the rats treated with the GnRH agonist alone. These findings indicate that antiosteoporotic agents could be useful for preventing induced osteopenia under the careful monitoring of biochemical markers of osteoblastic activity or bone resorption and BMD or BMC in patients undergoing GnRH treatment.

Notes: Abstract Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) of the vertebral artery was performed with an autoperfusion balloon catheter in five patients. There were no complications in the form of embolic episodes or neurological deficits due to brain ischaemia during inflation. In critical cases with insufficient collateral circulation during temporary occlusion, the use of an autoperfusion balloon catheter may expand the indications for PTA in patients with ischaemic cerebrovascular disease.
