Notes: Abstract Unusually increased CT density of the liver parenchyma after administration of cis-diaminedichloro platinum (II) (CDDP) is presented. This patient has neither a history of blood transfusion nor of iron overload. Therefore, CDDP which includes the heavy metal, Platinum, in its molecule was considered to be the only agent responsible for increasing the CT density.

Notes: Abstract We report specific changes bilaterally in the basal ganglia and thalamus following reperfusion after complete cerebral ischaemia. A 69-year-old man, resuscitated after cardiac arrest, showed symmetrical lowdensity lesions in the head of the caudate nucleus and lentiform nucleus on CT. MRI revealed methaemoglobin derived from minor haemorrhage in the basal ganglia and thalamus, not evident on CT. We suggest that this haemorrhage results from diapedesis of red blood cells through the damaged capillary endothelium following reperfusion.

Notes: Summary The authors describe a 66-year-old man with progressive gait disturbance caused by bilateral organized chronic subdural haematomas. The characteristics of these lesions on magnetic resonance (MR) images have not yet been clarified. The organized haematoma in our patient exhibited slight hypo-intensity on T 1-weighted MR images and marked hypo-intensity on T 2-weighted MR images obtained at 1.5 T. Preoperative MR imaging may give us useful information about surgical strategy in the case of chronic subdural haematoma with an unusual appearance on computed tomographic (CT) scans.

Notes: Abstract Upper gastrointestinal examinations with simultaneous cardiorespiratory monitoring were performed in 39 older premature infants with persistent apnea. Swallowing incoordination was documented to be causatively related to persistent apnea in such infants, especially with feeding. Direct relationship between apnea and gastroesophageal reflux wasnot documented in this study.

Notes: Abstract In the Saitama prefecture in Japan, VMA (vanillyl manderic acid) screening spot test for detection of neuroblastoma has been performed in 173,046 infants in the years 1981–1986 and 15 infants were found to have neuroblastoma. Two infants had mediastinal tumors and the remainder 13 had intra-abdominal tumors. Only 7 infants had palpable masses. Although CT was documented to be the best imaging procedure to provide sufficient information for treatment, conventional radiographic examinations of the chest and abdomen, and abdominal ultrasonography were able, as initial imaging procedures, to detect reasonably small neuroblastomas in infants with a positive VMA screening test.

Notes: Abstract The World Health Organization (WHO) is the agency of the United Nations with primary responsibility for international health matters and public health. Through the exchange of the knowledge and experience of health professionals from 165 nations WHO promotes comprehensive health services worldwide. As a part of this effort WHO has in recent years been concerned with improving the availability and utilization of diagnostic imaging, especially as it relates to health services in developing countries. Having devised and specified suitable basic radiographic equipment (the WHO BRS) a WHO Scientific Group was convened in 1982 to study the utilization of radiographic procedures and to to recommend their more efficacious and rational use. Then in 1984, recognizing the implications of newer imaging technology on world health, a second WHO Scientific Group considered the design, impact and future use of ultrasonography and computed tomography in developing countries. The findings of these scientific groups were published as part of the WHO Technical Report Series which makes available the recommendations of such international groups of experts [1, 2]. Although some of the needs of children were considered in these previous Technical Reports, WHO felt that the size and socioeconomic importance of the paediatric population worldwide warranted a further study and report to address the particular technical and clinical problems of diagnostic imaging in the paediatric age group. Thus a third WHO Scientific Group met in Geneva from 18 to 24 November 1985 to review established practices and experience in paediatric imaging throughout the world; and to recommend rational guidelines for diagnostic imaging for children to age 14 years. The scientific group included representatives of national and international paediatric and radiological societies from 18 of the developed and developing nations, selected in accordance with WHO policy. Members served without remuneration in their personal and professional capacities rather than as representatives of governments or other political bodies. Technical advice was also provided by representatives from the U.S. Center for Devices and Radiological Health, and the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technicians. Additional support was provided by the Radiation Medicine Section of WHO: Dr. N.T. Racoveanu, then Chief Medical Officer, Radiation Medicine, WHO served as secretary of the study group. The recommendations are contained in the recently published WHO Technical Report 757:Rational use of diagnostic imaging in paediatrics [3]. The report is available in English, French and Spanish directly from WHO, and from U.N. agencies throughout the world.

Notes: Abstract Meconium peritonitis occasionally occurs as a localized, encysted collection of meconium ranging from a few centimeters in size to huge cysts occupying most of the abdominal cavity. The cyst wall consists of fibrous granulation tissue and the cyst may contain only meconium or may also encase loops of bowel. Gas within the cyst indicates persistent communication between the perforated bowel and the cyst cavity; if the perforation seals over in utero the cyst remains gasless. Calcification is a variable finding. Sonography in two neonates with cystic meconium peritonitis showed well-defined, echogenic masses, one of which contained calcifications and was detected in utero.

Notes: Abstract Isomeric yield ratios of 30 fission products in 24 MeV proton-induced fission of238U were measured by the use of the ion-guide isotope separator on-line. The obtained isomeric yield ratios were converted to the angular momenta of primary fission fragments based on the statistical model. The deduced angular momenta were examined from various aspects. It is found that in general the angular momentum continuously increases with the fragment mass number including the region of symmetric mass division. However, there are some exceptions. For Sn isotopes the deduced angular momenta are quite small due to the spherical shape of the nuclear shell configuration. It is also concluded from the consideration of the charge distribution that the angular momentum of fission product scatters considerably within the narrow range of mass division. The dependence of the angular momentum on the available energy of fragments at scission point indicates that the individual fragment possesses a characteristic deformation at scission and/or the deduced angular momentum is seriously affected by the particle excitation after scission.

Notes: Abstract Nuclearg-factors of the 1229 keV 13+/2 and 2911 keV 21+/2 level and the half-life of the 1229 keV level have been measured to beg(1229)=0.058(5),g(2911)=0.69(12) andT 1/2 (1229)=6.79(2) ns. The experimental g-factors show that the 1229 keV level has a dominant configuration of (ρf 7/2⊗3−), and the 2911 keV level has an almost pure (ρf 7/2⊗7−), configuration.

Notes: Abstract Two infant boys, one 3 months of age and the other 8 weeks of age, with symptoms suggesting gastric outlet obstruction had upper gastrointestinal fluororadiographic examinations which showed typical signs for gastric antral webs (diaphragms or membranes), but neither had actual webs as proven by surgery in one and by endoscopy in the other. The report emphasizes the possibility of falsely positive radiographic findings, which can be tested by potentially corroborative fiberoptic endoscopy, thus avoiding unnecessary surgery.
