Notes: The following corrections should be made in Tsuda, Yamamoto & Yagi [Acta Cryst. (1988). A44, 864-870]. (1) 'only two kinds of domain boundaries' in the Abstract should be changed to 'two kinds of image contrast of domain boundaries'. (2) The expressions for h2, h4, h6 in § 4.1 should be replaced by h2: -x -y -z + h4: -x -y -z (inversion) h6: -x -y -z + (3) "two kinds of DC's showing different contrast' in the second paragraph in § 4.1 should be changed to 'two kinds of DC contrast'.

Notes: Image contrast of domains and discommensurations in ferroelectric Rb2ZnCl4 is studied. Six domains of the two orientation variants and three translation variants in the ferroelectric phase are observed. However, only two kinds of domain boundaries, which are the discommensurations in the incommensurate phase of Rb2ZnCl4, are observed. These observations agree with group-theoretical considerations of the phase transition from the normal phase to the commensurate phase of Rb2ZnCl4.

Notes: Summary Both intrinsic viscosity formulae, for macromolecules ofn identical frictional elements and for those ofn different frictional elements are obtained by tensor calculation, without replacing theOseen tensor by its average over all orientations. The first formula corresponds to theKirkwood frictional coefficient formula. The formula is extended for a macromolecule ofn different spherical subunits, on the basis of the shell model method, called byBloomfield, which models the molecule by a surface shell of small spherical frictional elements. The method gives theEinstein equation for a sphere. Finally the calculated values by the shell model for biological molecule is compared with experimental values. Fair agreement is observed for myoglobin, hemoglobin, and hemocyanin. However, for molecules of such an asymmetric shape as tobacco mosaic virus and fibrinogen, agreement is not satisfactory. Discrepancy between theory and experiment is more prominent for viscosity than for translational frictional coefficient.

Notes: Summary The visible absorption spectra, the electron microphotographs and the optical microphotograph of the cellulosic fibres dyed with direct dyes were observed in comparison with Acridine Orange free base (AO). Furthermore, dyeing was carried out in a thermostat bath at 90 ± 1, 80 ± 1, and 70 ± 1 °C. From the results, the change of enthalpy,ΔH° for the dyeing was calculated.Δh° of AO was very small in comparison with other direct dyes, and AO in the cellulosic fibres has predominantly crystallized property. The result was expressed as follows: Crystallized tendency =(dye-dye interaction) -(dye-fibre interaction).

Notes: Summary Changes in glucagon, insulin and somatostatin secretion induced by electrical splanchnic nerve stimulation were examined in rats treated with streptozotocin as neonates and as adults. In order to study the direct neural effects we used the isolated perfused rat pancreas with intact left splanchnic nerve in vitro. In normal rats splanchnic nerve stimulation causes significant decreases in insulin (30–40%) and somatostatin (30–50%) secretion at both 16.7 mmol/l and 1 mmol/l glucose concentrations. In the neonatal streptozotocin-diabetic rats splanchnic nerve stimulation at 16.7 mmol/l glucose decreased insulin secretion (14%) further than in the control rats (30%), however, somatostatin secretion did not decrease to the same extent. Similar results were also observed at the low (1 mmol/l) glucose concentration. On the other hand, percent decreases of insulin and somatostatin secretion induced by splanchnic nerve stimulation in the streptozotocin-diabetic rats were similar to the values observed in the normal control rats. The glucagon secretion in response to splanchnic nerve stimulation at 16.7 mmol/l glucose from pancreatic Alpha cells in both types of induced diabetes is exaggerated, and the degree of exaggeration seems to parallel the severity of the hyperglycaemia. However, the splanchnic nerve stimulation-induced glucagon secretion at 1 mmol/l glucose was impaired in the streptozotocin-diabetic rats, but not in the neonatal streptozotocin-diabetic rats. These data suggest that the sensitivity of diabetic Alpha and Delta cells to sympathetic neural activation are blunted, whereas the sensitivity of Beta cells is enhanced in the diabetic animal model.

Notes: Summary The visible absorption spectra of dye crystals and the cross-section of the polyvinyl alcohol fibre dyed with Acridine Orange as free base were measured by means of a microspectrophotometer. The spectra of crystals show a sharp and high maximum at 450 nm which will be referred to as the peak from dye crystals. The spectra of the cross-section of dyed fibre show three peaks of 443 nm (crystals-band), 470 nm (β-band) and 499 nm (α-band). These results suggest that crystals, aggregates and monomer of the dye exist within the dyed polyvinyl alcohol fibre.
