Notes: Summary Haemorrhage in regions remote from the site of following intracranial operations is rare, but they do occur. We performed supratentorial craniotomy on 639 patients between the time of introduction of computed tomography (CT) for clinical use in 1983 and June 1992; subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) in the posterior fossa occurred postoperatively in six of these cases. These included four patients with tumours in the sellar region, one with an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) and one who underwent superficial temporal artery (STA)-middle cerebral artery (MCA) anastomosis. The ages of the six patients ranged from 17–72 years. Haemorrhage occurred on the day of operation in one case and was detected on CT examination on the day following surgery in the remaining five cases. Of three patients with disturbance of consciousness, two underwent suboccipital craniectomy for reduction of intracranial pressure, while one received barbiturate therapy and later underwent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt surgery. No special treatment was necessary for the remaining three patients with less serious lesions. Five of the six patients ultimately recovered their pre-operative neurological status apart from the primary diseases. Factors inducing such haemorrhages seem likely to include displacement of the cerebellum by reduced CSF pressure during and after operations, and stretching and tearing of the veins and venules in the sulci of the tentorial surface of the cerebellum. Consideration should therefore be given to the maintenance of an appropriate CSF pressure during operation; this is particularly important in elderly patients and those with an atrophied cerebral cortex.

Notes: We report an 80-year-old man with the lamina lucida type of linear IgA disease, with IgA autoantibodies reactive with 200-kDa and 280-kDa epidermal proteins. The patient presented with widespread bullous lesions on his trunk and extremities without mucosal involvement. Histopathology of lesional skin showed a subepidermal blister with papillary microabscesses of neutrophils and a few eosinophils. Direct immunofluorescence microscopy of perilesional skin showed linear deposits of IgA and C3 at the basement membrane zone. The patient’s serum contained IgA autoantibodies that bound exclusively to the epidermal side of 1 mol L−1 NaCl split skin as determined by indirect immunofluorescence microscopy. Circulating IgA autoantibodies to 200- and 280-kDa antigens were detected in the patient’s serum by immunoblot analysis using extracts from normal human epidermis and human epidermal keratinocytes. These two antibodies, eluted from individual nitrocellulose membranes, reacted with the epidermal side of 1 mol L−1 NaCl split skin on indirect immunofluorescence microscopy, and bound to hemidesmosomes as determined by immunoperoxidase electron microscopy. This observation suggests the presence of hitherto uncharacterized 200- and 280-kDa hemidesmosomal proteins distinct from BPAG1, BPAG2 and β4 integrin as target antigens in linear IgA disease.

Notes: Summary The visible absorption spectra of the cross-section of dyed PVA fibre with AO were measured by means of a microspectrophotometer. The spectra showed a high maximum at 475 nm, which would be referred to asβ-band (a monomer peak at 498 nm). Many void places were recognized in core layer by electron or scanning electron microscopy. It was explained that the dimer band mainly arose from dye aggregates or crystals at the void places of fibre.

Notes: Summary The visible absorption spectra of dye crystals and the cross-section of the polyvinyl alcohol fibre dyed with Acridine Orange as free base were measured by means of a microspectrophotometer. The spectra of crystals show a sharp and high maximum at 450 nm which will be referred to as the peak from dye crystals. The spectra of the cross-section of dyed fibre show three peaks of 443 nm (crystals-band), 470 nm (β-band) and 499 nm (α-band). These results suggest that crystals, aggregates and monomer of the dye exist within the dyed polyvinyl alcohol fibre.

Notes: Summary The visible absorption spectra of the cross-sections of the dyed various synthetic-polymer fibres were measured by means of a microspectrophotometer. We found that the spectra of Acridine Orange hydrochloride in the crosssections of fibres showed a maximum of α-band and β band, and the spectra of Acridine Orange (free base), indicated a maximum of α-band, β-band and the crystal peak of the dye. These results suggest that the monomeric state, the aggregate as well as the crystal of the dye exist in these dyed synthetic-polymer fibres.

Notes: Summary The visible absorption spectra of dye crystals and the cross-section of wool fibre dyed with metal complex dye (C. I. Acid Yellow 161) were measured by means of a microspectrophotometer. The spectrum of crystal showed sharp and high maximum at 410 nm referred to as the peak from single crystal of the dye. The spectrum of the cross-section of dyed fibre showed two peaks of 410 nm (crystal-band) and 435 nm (monomeric state of the dye). Also, the electron diffraction pattern of the cross-section of dyed wool fibre showed the reflection ring of chromium. These results suggested that the dye should be present in the wool fibre in the monomeric, aggregate or crystalline state.
