    Notes: The growth of lutetium silicide layers on 〈100〉 and 〈111〉Si is studied by random and channeling Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, x-ray diffractometry, and scanning electron microscopy. The LuSi2−x layers grow epitaxially with a better crystallinity on 〈100〉Si than on 〈111〉Si by vacuum annealing at 400 °C. Silicidation of Lu layers proceeds via nonuniform spatial diffusion of silicon atoms leading to a columnar growth of the silicide layer. Resistivity measurements in the temperature range 4.6–300 K show that LuSi2−x layers are metallic.

    Notes: Analysis of the leading nonlinear term of the susceptibility χ3(T) of the singlet-ground-state heavy-fermion superconductor UPd2Al3 shows evidence for a jump at TN and a "third-order'' Curie–Weiss type behavior at higher temperatures, inferring quadrupolar or magnetoelastic interactions. These effects are closely related to quadrupolar correlations observed in measurements of the nonlinear susceptibility and calculated in a crystal-electric-field approach for the singlet-ground-state systems URu2Si2 and PrNi5 .

    Notes: A marker study of the lutetium silicide prepared by vacuum furnace annealing of a Lu thin layer on Si substrate shows that Si atoms are the dominant diffusing species during the formation of LuSi2−x. Rutherford backscattering spectrometry is used to determine the position of the marker before and after the annealing. The silicide films are characterized by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy.

    Notes: This paper reports on the new pellet injection system for refueling the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak with cubic H2 or D2 pellets having alternative side lengths of 1.5, 1.75, and 2.0 mm and optional Ne doping. The system delivers series of about 100 pellets at a maximum repetition rate of more than 40 Hz. The pellets are accelerated by means of a centrifuge with an optimized straight acceleration arm. This configuration minimizes the compulsive force acting on the pellet during the acceleration process. Since this also minimizes stresses inside the pellet, high velocities—a maximum of 1211 m/s being achieved—are possible without destroying the hydrogen cubes. A special pellet feed-in technique based on a static stop cylinder interrupting the acceleration path successfully reduced the horizontal scattering angle to values of less than ±4°; a high efficiency, with more than 90% of the pellets arriving within the acceptance angle, was thus achieved. The whole system was found to work very reliably and reproducibly during the whole test operation period, covering about 105 pellet shots, and is now being integrated into the ASDEX upgrade experiment.

    Notes: We have constructed monolithic masks for proximity x-ray lithography by forming 1 μm thick polycrystalline Si membranes directly on glass support frames. Finished masks are 78 mm in diameter and ∼5 mm thick, with the Si membrane spanning 27 mm. The monolithic design provides simple processing and unprecedented flatness of 30 nm across the membrane and 〈500 nm across the entire disk. Mask blanks were metallized with 500 nm of W that was sputter deposited under conditions that hold the film stress 〈50 MPa. Tungsten was patterned by reactive ion etching to form features as small as 0.25 μm.

    Notes: Interactions between Erysiphe graminis f.sp. tritici and Septoria nodorum on wheat were studied in the greenhouse and in a 2-year field experiment using artificial inoculation. The integrated form of the logistic growth model dy/dt = ry (1 -y/K), with infection rate r and final accumulated disease K, was fitted to the disease progress data. Septoria nodorum substantially reduced the disease severities of E. graminis, and caused significant reductions of at least 60% in final accumulated disease K of E. graminis. In the field trials, E. graminis increased the final accumulated disease K of S. nodorum. Owing to the extremely low severity of E. graminis, the increase of S. nodorum severity was small, and significance was given in one of the two years only, with an increase in K of roughly 30%. In the pot experiment, final accumulated disease K of S. nodorum remained unchanged, but there was a significant 30% increase in the infection rate r of S. nodorum. The difference between field and pot trials was explained by the climatic conditions in the greenhouse which excluded secondary infections of 5. nodorum, and which are important factors for disease progress in the field.

    Notes: Progress in propagation of milkfish has been impeded by the shortage of mature broodstock. This study was a first step toward revealing the environmental cues for the maturation of milkfish. Experiments were carried out during 1978-1985 in an indoor tank (5.2 × 4.8 × 13 m) under photoperiod control and in an outdoor tank (63 × 5.4 × 13 m). In two controlled, long-photoperiod regime experiments, 86 and 83% of the fish matured, the highest percentages yet reported. In these experiments, milkfish matured one month earlier than the normal spawning season, two months after the fish were exposed to the long daylight regime. Only 21% of the fish under a natural photoperiod regime in the outdoor tank matured. Results of the current study suggest that a change and increase in photoperiod are necessary for the onset of maturation.

    Notes: In this prospective study we analysed 336 consecutive central venous catheters in neonates less than 3500 g. A protocol standardizing the technique of insertion, the care of the catheter, the preparation of solutions and weekly bacteriological screening was applied to all catheter insertions. Mechanical complications were observed in 15 (6%), catheter dislodgement (5%), obstruction (8%), perforation (2%) and caval vein thrombosis (0.6%). Routine bacteriological cultures of feeding solutions and infusion devices showed a contamination rate of 3.5% and 2%. Skin swab and catheter tip cultures after catheter removal demonstrated positive results in 6% and 4.7%, but catheter related sepsis occurred in only 2.3%. Staphylococcus epidermidis was found in 81% of all positive bacterial cultures. Four point seven per cent of catheters were removed for suspected infection though only one third of them produced a bacteriological growth. We conclude that the risk of mechanical complications and contamination of central venous catheters in neonates can be minimized by the use of a standardized protocol.
