Notes: The initial lymph vessels, the lymph capillaries and precollectors, are difficult to detect in normal skin using routine histological methods. A method is described in which specimens of the skin are fixed in an expanded condition. In 1.05 μm thick plastic-embedded sections the dilated lymph vessels of the skin can be demonstrated. The dermal lymph vessel network can be seen following the subepidermal injection of a coloured solution. The endothelial cells and subendothelial fibrous network can be examined using electron microscopy.

Notes: Two computer programs – one for calculation and graphical representation of the azimuthal angle ψ of all possible multiple reflections versus the wavelength λ (PSILAM) and one for the simulation of the Umweganregung-intensity variation during rotation of the crystal about the scattering vector of a `forbidden' or very weak reflection (PSIINT) – have been developed on the basis of the program UMWEG [Rossmanith (1985). Z. Kristallogr. 171, 253–254; (1986). Acta Cryst. A42, 344–348] with emphasis on suitability for inexpensive hardware. Examples of the excellent agreement between measurements and calculations and of the necessity of the combined application of both programs are given.

Notes: Abstract The potent inhibition of the shikimate pathway enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate (EPSP) synthase by the broad-spectrum herbicide glyphosate (N-[phosphonomethyl]glycine) was confirmed for the enzymes extracted from various bacteria, a green alga and higher plants. However, 5 out of 6 species belonging to the genus Pseudomonas were found to have EPSP synthases with a 50- to 100-fold decreased sensitivity to the inhibitor. Correspondingly, growth of these 5 species was not inhibited by 5 mM glyphosate, and the organisms did not excrete shikimate-3-phosphate in the presence of the herbicide.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Mit den bisher üblichen Färbemethoden war es kaum möglich, sicher zwischen frühen ischämischen Herzmuskelschäden, autolytischen Veränderungen and auch intaktem Myocard ohne Kernanschnitt zu unterscheiden.
Notes: Summary With conventional staining techniques it was nearly impossible to differentiate with certainty between early ischemic myocardial lesions, autolytic changes and intact myocardium without a nuclear section. In 1986 it was introduced an immunohistochemical method, which presented C5b-9 Complement Complex as a necrosis marker in cryostat sections. Our further development of this process has resulted in a technique for application on routine paraffin sections: C5b-9 Complement Complex is particularly well-suited for the exact and autolytically insensitive presentation of disseminated necroses of fiber bundels and single fibers of myocardium. The application of the technique on paraffin sections will lead to the use of the same in forensic medicine routine diagnostics of early ischemic myocardial lesions, even in cases of “sudden” cardiac death.

Notes: Summary The decoupling of bone formation and bone resorption causes an insidious bone loss that is responsible for the negative skeletal balance in the frequent form of low turnover osteoporosis. The reduction of bone formation can hardly be verified by clinical methods. Osteocalcin, a non-collagenous bone protein, has proved to be a useful new indicator of bone formation. To establish its predictable value, plasma levels of osteocalcin were compared to conventional serological data of bone turnover and to histomorphometric parameters of iliac crest trabecular bone. In cases of osteoporosis with normal bone turnover activity (as confirmed by histomorphometry) no differences were observed in any of our laboratory data including osteocalcin. However, there was a significant lower mean serum level of osteocalcin in a group of patients with histomorphometrically proven low turnover osteoporosis in comparison to those with normal bone turnover. Serum levels of osteocalcin below 2.0 ng/ml seem to indicate a low turnover in the individual case of osteoporosis while this is unlikely when serum levels above 6.0 ng/ml are measured (according to our RIA).

Notes: Summary We investigated the effects of phentolamine and another more selective α2-adrenoceptor antagonist, rauwolscine, on insulin release in vivo (in female Wistar-rats) and in vitro (in perfused rat pancreas and in isolated perifused mouse islets). Phentolamine was found to significantly increase glucose-induced insulin release. On the other hand, rauwolscine failed to do so, when applied in a concentration that effectively antagonized the inhibitory effect of clonidine. These results demonstrate that phentolamine is capable of directly stimulating insulin release. This effect is thus not mediated by α-adrenoceptors. For this reason phentolamine is not an appropriate tool to study possible inhibitory effects of the sympathetic nervous system on insulin release. An enhanced insulin response as may be observed in animals and in man in the presence of phentolamine does not furnish evidence for a tonic inhibitory control of the islet cells by the sympathetic nervous system.
