Notes: Initial ac susceptibility χ was examined in the temperature range from 4.2 K to Curie temperatures for polycrystalline Fe100−xNix (20≤x≤50) alloys. The reentrant spin glass is found in x=30–45 alloys. The dependence of the freezing temperature Tg on the intensity of driving magnetic field (ac: 0–0.26 Oe; dc: 0–10 Oe) and on the frequency (140–9200 Hz) was studied for the Fe65Ni35 alloy. A strong magnetic relaxation is observed below Tg. These results are discussed based on the cluster model.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of our research is to obtain an understanding of the binding mechanism and its correlations in terms of chemical structure and the potentiactive drug activity. The interaction of 5-fluorouracil (5-fluorouracil is used as an anticancer drug) with sodium poly-α,L-glutamate in aqueous solution was studied with a spectral method and viscosity measurement. From the binding data, the molar change in enthalpy, entropy and the number of binding sites on the polymer were calculated. It is very interesting that the value ofΔH0 of the binding of 5-fluorouracil with sodium poly-α,L-glutamate is smaller than that of 5-trifluoromethyluracil (although 5-trifluoromethyluracil is not used as an anticancer drug, the compound has a similar structure to 5-fluorouracil).

Notes: Summary Two transglutaminases (TGase) with estimated molecular weight of 55,000 (55-K TGase) and 120,000 (120-K TGase) were partially purified from the cytosolic fraction of porcine skin (epidermis-rich preparation) using DEAE-cellulose and gel-filtration chromatographies. The enzyme activities of both trans-glutaminases were enhanced more than 20-fold by treatment with calpain (Ca2+-dependent cysteine proteinase) in the presence of Ca2+, and this enhancement was inhibited by adding EDTA, leupeptin, or an endogenous calpain-specific inhibitor protein (calpastatin). 55-K TGase was effectively activated by a smaller amount of calpain than was 120-K TGase, while known activating reagents such as thrombin and dimethyl sulfoxide or heat treatment preferentially activated 120-K TGase. One of the physiological functions of calpain in the epidermis may be the activation of epidermal transglutaminases.

Notes: Abstract The distribution of lipocortin I, a steroid-induced inhibitory protein of phospholipase A2, was examined in normal and psoriatic human skin. Using immunoblotting analysis with specific antibody against human lipocortin I purified from human placenta, lipocortin I was detected as a 37 kDa protein in cultured epidermal cells, whole skin and epidermis. In the dermis and stratum corneum, lipocortin I was only weakly detectable by Western blotting. In contrast to normal skin, much less lipocortin I was detected by Western blotting analysis in psoriatic skin. Using immunoperoxidase immunohistochemical analysis, lipocortin I was demonstrated in the cytoplasm of keratinocytes in the upper and middle layers of the epidermis and in some infiltrating cells in the dermis in normal skin. In involved psoriatic skin, by contrast, lipocortin I was almost undetectable in the epidermis, although it was demonstrated in some infiltrating cells in the dermis. No immunostaining of lipocortin I was observed in the stratum corneum of normal or psoriatic skin. These results, together with the finding that phospholipase A2 activity is higher in psoriatic epidermis than in normal epidermis, suggest that lipocortin I plays an important role in the regulation of differentiation and proliferation of epidermal keratinocytes.

Notes: Summary Ultrasonographic examination was performed in 13 preterm, 10 normal term and 3 term brain-damaged infants to evaluate changes of the ventricular width with the head position. The lower side of the frontal horn was narrowed and the upper side dilated in all preterm and brain-damaged infants. These changes of the ventricular width may be due to gravity and soft brain. Therefore, it is very important to consider the transformation of the lateral ventricles with the head position when asymmetry of the lateral ventricle is identified in infants showing prematurity or brain damage.

Notes: Summary A comparative study of intracranial imaging and brain pathology in cases of trisomy 18 and 13 was performed. Computed tomography (CT) and ultrasonography (US) revealed disproportional dilatation of the lateral ventricles, a wide Sylvian fissure and a large extracerebellar space with a small cerebellum in each case. In addition, it was characteristic that the occipital poles of the cerebrum protruded in the infero-posterior direction in trisomy 18, and the pontine basis was relatively wide in trisomy 13. The brain pathology in trisomy 18 and 13 demonstrated that the large extracerebellar space is due to the cerebellar dysplasia and protruding occipital poles, the wide Sylvian fissures due to the temporal lobes or external capsular dysplasia, and the relatively wide pontine basis due to meningeal glioneuronal heterotopia. Thus, the characteristic intracranial image in trisomy 18 and 13 suggest microdysgenesis of the brain and might be useful for understanding the pathological structure of the central nervous system in these conditions.

Notes: Abstract Pressureless sintering of ultrafine SiC powder containing a large amount of free Si was carried out with the aid of boron. Epitaxial growth of secondary particles was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on some hexagonal-shaped surfaces of β-SiC cube-octahedra. The other hexagonal-shaped surfaces were seen to be entirely smooth. The two-fold symmetry of the [100] axes for the appearance of secondary particles certainly reflects the polarity of β-SiC. When the sintering was repeated again, coalescence growth of secondary particles was remarkable on the former surfaces and layered growth was predominant on the latter surfaces.
