Notes: A cloth-structured magnetic device was designed, and the optimized relation between amorphous fiber and conductive fiber size was shown. The inductance, equivalent resistance, and quality factor of cloth-structured magnetic devices were calculated. Furthermore, the stray capacitance of the device was estimated from the analysis of an equivalent circuit. A cloth inductor of only 0.7 mm thickness could be made, which could have an inductance of 100 μH, a rating current of 100 mA, and a quality factor over 60. Regarding the further miniaturization of the device, the magnetic flux distribution established inside the cloth inductor was measured. The miniaturization limit was estimated, which was influenced by the magnetic permeability and the aspect ratio of the fibers.

Notes: Nitrogen-containing carbon films where deposited by reactive ion plating under a pure nitrogen ambient. Knoop hardness, microindentation hardness, and microscratch hardness of these films were evaluated. Indentation hardness, such as Knoop hardness and microindentation hardness, is influenced by surface roughness and substrate hardness, so the effect of nitrogen inclusion on the hardness cannot be clearly evaluated. In contrast, an atomic force microscope can clearly evaluate the effect of nitrogen inclusion on scratched wear depth. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We investigated whether exine-free pollen allergen particles exist together with the intact pollen grains of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) in the air during the pollen season in Yamagata City. First, we separated the allergen particles in an Andersen multi-stage air-sampler according to their aerodynamic diameters. The amount of major allergen (Cry j I) on each stage of the sampler was determined by a sensitive fluorometric sandwich ELISA, and the pollen count of the same samples was done by light microscopy after Carberla staining. Cry j I was found in stages 1 to 6, whereas most of intact and ru|3tured pollen grains were microscopically observed only in stages 1 and 2. Second, we suctioned the air through a tandem membrane filter system (the first filter, Nuclepore filter with 5 um-pores; and the second, Millipore filter with 0.3 μm-pores). None of the pollen grains was detectable on the 0.3 μm-pore filter with light microscopy. However, Cry j I was detectable in the aqueous extract from the second filter. From these results, we concluded that pollen-free Cry j I existed in the air of Yamagata City during the pollen season.

Notes: Summary Fifty-two patients with cerebrovascular risk factors without neurological abnormalities were reviewed with respect to periventricular hyperintensity (PVH) on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); brain atrophy was also assessed by CT and T1-weighted MRI. Extensive PVH showed a stronger correlation with agerelated atrophy than mild or absent PVH. The relative volume of brain affected by PVH, calculated by computer, also correlated with brain atrophy, especially ventricular enlargement. The effects of PVH on brain ageing and atrophy is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The antibody response to P-fimbriae ofEscherichia coli in patients with upper urinary tract infections was investigated. In the sera of patients with pyelonephritis obtained at the initial visit to hospital (3 to 7 days after the onset of symptoms), a high incidence of antibodies to P-fimbriae was detected (12 out of 14 patients). P-fimbriatedEscherichia coli strains were isolated from urine samples in all of these antibody-positive patients. Antibodies detected by ELISA using purified antigen were essentially IgG and specifically recognized P-fimbriae. These antibodies inhibited completely, or in some cases partially, mannose-resistant hemagglutination with P-fimbriatedEscherichia coli.

Notes: Non-linear wave motion on the free water surface in a two-dimensional container subjected to external periodical excitation is considered in this paper. In order to analyse the problem for arbitrary container geometries, a solution scheme using free surface Lagrangean particles is employed. Fluid motion is assumed to be governed by the Laplace equation in terms of the velocity potential with a non-linear pressure equation on the surface. The boundary element method with explicit time marching is used by the fluid region boundary discretization alone at each time increment. Various containers with an inclined side wall are analysed for the horizontal sway motion and compared.
