Notizen: Renormalization effects of the bath-induced vibronic population transfer on resonant light scattering (RLS) from molecules in condensed phases are theoretically studied based on the Markoffian master equation approach. By using the double space diagram technique, the self-energy originated from the bath-induced vibronic population transfer is analytically solved, and the analytic expressions for the intensities both of the stationary and of the time-resolved RLS spectra are derived. The renormalization effect is analyzed in terms of dimensionless molecular parameters, and model calculations are also performed to confirm theoretical results.

Notizen: A theory of the emission spectrum from a multilevel molecular system pumped by strong resonant radiation fields based on the double space theory of the density matrix is developed. We are especially concerned with a three-level, one-laser system, and a three-level, two-laser system. It is shown that the band structure cannot always be estimated by the energy level structure of the dressed states. In fact, in both model systems, triplet structures of the emission spectra can be observed in the case where the magnitude of the molecule-field interaction is larger than that of the detuning. The characteristic features of the band structure are interpreted in terms of the dressed state picture based on analytically solvable models. Several numerical calculations are performed to show how the multiplet band structure in the emission spectrum is influenced by the detuning and the power of the pump field(s).

Notizen: Effects of vibronic coherence transfer induced by the heat bath on ultrafast time-resolved resonant light scattering (RLS) spectra are theoretically investigated within the master equation approach. The vibronic coherence initially created by a coherent optical excitation transfers to other vibronic coherent states due to inelastic interactions between the vibronic system concerned (the relevant system) and the heat bath. The vibronic coherence transfer results in the quantum beats in the time-resolved RLS spectra. The bath-induced vibronic transition operator is derived in the double space representation of the density matrix theory. Model calculations of the femtosecond (fs) time-resolved RLS spectra are performed to demonstrate the effects of the bath-induced vibronic coherence transfer.

Notizen: Expressions for the differential cross section of the resonance Raman scattering from molecules in which initially prepared nonequilibrium vibronic levels undergo vibrational and/or electronic relaxations are derived by using the generating function method. Two kinds of the initial nonequilibrium vibronic distributions, single vibronic level and Poisson ones are taken into account. A displaced harmonic oscillator model for the initial and resonant vibrational states and a linear vibrational quantum number dependence of the relaxation constants are adopted in deriving the cross sections. Model calculations of the time-resolved resonance Raman scattering cross sections and of the excitation profiles of the nth order Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman bands are performed by using the derived expressions. The results of the calculation indicate that the anti-Stokes Raman bands make a significant contribution to the resonance Raman scattering from the nonequilibrium vibronic distributions. It is suggested that measurements of the excitation profiles are useful for analyzing the nonequilibrium distribution initially prepared and the subsequent relaxation mechanism.

Notizen: Summary The effects of human α-, β-, or γ-interferon (IFN) on the replication and production of human T-lymphotrophic virus type-I (HTLV-I) were investigated in a human T-cell line, MT-2. Virus transmission and production estimated by syncytium formation and HTLV-I-associated reverse transcriptase (RT) activity were strongly suppressed in the presence of α- and β-IFN, but not γ-IFN. However, the expression of virus specific proteins gp46 but not p19, p24, p28, p36, and gp68 was affected with IFNs as revealed by Western blotting analysis. Electron microscopic observations showed that some of the HTLV-I particles were trapped in the intracellular vacuoles in the presence of high doses of α- or β-IFN. Continuous supply of IFNs appeared to be essential for the constant suppression of RT activity. These results suggest that α- and β-IFN do not inhibit HTLV-I gene expression strikingly but suppress processing or assembly of virus proteins and/or releasing of virions in the late phase of maturation.

Notizen: Abstract Twenty-one Japanese patients with sebaceous carcinoma of the eyelid were investigated for tumour incorporation of human papillomavirus (HPV) types-6, 11, 16, 18, 31, and/or 33 DNA by in situ hybridization with fluorescein isothiocyanate-labelled DNA probes, and for p53 protein accumulation by immunohistochemical analysis with an antibody to p53 protein. Thirteen tumours (61.9%), including 9 cases of multiple infections, were positive for HPV DNA. Positive signal in the nucleus was observed not only in the cancer cells, but also in the cells of surrounding normal sebaceous glands and epidermis. Positive nuclear staining of cancer cells with the antibody to p53 protein was detected in 12 cases (57.1%). p53 protein accumulation was more frequently observed in the clinically advanced cases, occasionally in association with recurrence and/or metastasis. Among the 12 p53-positive cases, 7 were also positive for the presence of HPV DNA. HPV infections exist in a high percentage of sebaceous carcinomas of the eyelid in Japan; the overexpression of p53 protein may be important in both carcinogenesis and progression.

Notizen: Summary The immunohistochemical distribution of α and β subunits of S-100 protein (S-100α, S-100β, respectively) in 138 cases of human brain tumors was investigated by the avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase method. Brain tumors can be divided into four groups: group 1 [S-100α (+) and/or S-100β (+)]; astrocytoma, glioblastoma, ependymoma, subependymoma, oligodendroglioma, choroid plexus papilloma, gangliocytoma, meningioma, chordoma, malignant melanoma. Group 2 [S-100α (+) and S-100β (-)]; pineoblastoma, pituitary adenoma, craniopharyngioma, rhabdomyosarcoma. Group 3 [S-100α (-) and S-100β (+)]; acoustic Schwannoma. Group 4 [S-100α (-) and S-100β (-)]; medulloblastoma, malignant lymphoma, germinoma. The S-100β immunoreactivity pattern in brain tumors was similar to those obtained using conventional anti-S-100 protein sera. In the first group of brain tumors both the number of positively stained tumor cells and the staining intensity were generally greater for S-100β than for S-100α with a few exceptions including one gemistocytic astrocytoma, one subependymoma, one malignant melanoma, and some cases of glioblastomas. As to the relationship between malignancy and S-100 protein in glioma, S-100β immunoreactivity decreased according to degree of malignancy, while that of S-100α varied, suggesting a heterogeneity of tumor cells in glioblastomas. Immunostaining for S-100α and S-100β might become a useful diagnostic procedure in brain tumors and may give us more detailed and precise data of S-100 protein in brain tumors.

Notizen: Summary A necropsy case of a primary rhabdomyosarcoma with chronic paragonimiasis in the cerebrum of a 68-year-old man is reported. The clinical data showed a right hemiplegia and dysarthria which became lethal in 6 months even though operation and radiation therapy were performed. Computed tomography revealed a large low-density area associated with the peripheral enhancement in the left basal ganglia, and multiple conglomerated calcified masses in the left temporal and occipital lobes. Biopsied and necropsied materials of the tumor in the basal ganglia was reddish brown in color and histologically was composed of purely mesenchymal derivatives with both embryonal and mature striated muscle cells but neither neuronal nor glial elements. Some of the tumor cells with extending slender cytoplasms showed obvious cross striations at the light and electron microscope levels and immunohistochemical reactivity for myoglobin. All tumor cells were also positive for vimentin, but not for glial fibrillary acidic protein. The clinical and necropsy findings revealed no primary lesion anywhere but in the brain. In addition, numerous dead oval eggs ofParagonimus westermani were found in many cystoid lesions encapsulated by thick connective tissues with calcification and/or ossification. Clinicopathological features of 24 cases of primary rhabdomyosarcoma of the central nervous system reported in the literature are reviewed briefly. The histogenesis of this tumor are discussed together with comments on cerebral paragonimiasis.

Notizen: Summary Human adult peripheral blood lymphocytes were successfully immortalized by co-cultivation with irradiated autologous and homologous T-cell lines harbouring human T-cell leukaemia virus-I (HTLV-I). The efficiency of transformation was the same in both cases. The participation of alloantigen stimulation in co-cultivation procedures is discussed, and it is stressed that factors other than alloantigen stimulation might be required for the efficient immortalization of human T-lymphocytes in vitro by HTLV.
