    Notes: Abstract Carrageenin-induced paw edema in HMW- and LMW-kininogens-deficient rats was significantly less than that in normal rats. There are three kiniogens, HMW-, LMW- and T-kininogens, in normal rat plasma, but B/N-Katholiek rat plasma contains only T-kininogen. The pretreatment with captopril, a kiniase II inhibitor, enhanced paw swelling of normal rats, but not that of the deficient rats, indicating that bradykinin released from HMW-kininogen may have a role for the swelling but T-kinin may not be released in this inflammation.

    Notes: Abstract  Distribution and morphological changes of cells containing the signal transducing neurotrophin receptor, full-length Trk B (fl-Trk B), were investigated in the prefrontal cortex (area FD) and the primary visual cortex (area OC) of the macaque monkey between embryonic day 140 and the adult stage. In area FD at the adult stage, fl-Trk B immunoreactivity was mainly observed in the pyramidal cells in layers II/III, V and VI. Small numbers of granule cells in layer IV were immunopositive. Bipolar and multipolar cells in layer II were rarely immunoreactive. At embryonic day 140, the number of fl-Trk B immunoreactive pyramidal cell was high, and gradually decreased until the adult stage. In layer IV, the number of fl-Trk B-ir cells was also high at embryonic day 140, and decreased remarkably from postnatal day 7 to the adult stage. On the other hand, in area OC at the adult stage, cells in layers II/III, IV, V and VI were fl-Trk B immunopositive. From embryonic day 140 until adulthood, the cells in layer IVc were fl-Trk B immunoreactive. The strongest fl-Trk B immunoreactivity in areas FD and OC occurred at postnatal month 6, coinciding with the time of the synapse overproduction. These findings suggest that ligands of fl-Trk B, such as BDNF and NT4/5 may be involved in the development and maintenance of the monkey cerebral cortices.

    Notes: Abstract  Distribution and morphological changes of cells containing the signal transducing neurotrophin receptor, full-length Trk B (fl-Trk B), were investigated in the hippocampal formation of the macaque monkey between embryonic day 140 and the adult stage. Western blot analysis showed that one main protein band, which migrated at 141 kDa, was detected in both the embryonic and adult hippocampal formation. In the pyramidal cells in CA1 and CA3 subfields, the subiculum, and the entorhinal cortex, fl-Trk B-immunoreactive dendrites were observable in the embryonic stage. In contrast, in the granule cells of the dentate gyrus, few dendrites were immunoreactive during embryonic and early developmental stages. This difference may be due to the later growth of the granule cells of the dentate gyrus. The existence of fl-Trk B immunoreactivity in the cell body and dendrites in the embryonic hippocampal neurons, suggests that BDNF and/or NT4/5 act on the hippocampal cells by autocrine/paracrine mechanisms. In the entorhinal cortex, fl-Trk B immunoreactivity became localized in the stellate cells in layer II and the pyramidal cells in layers III,V and VI in adulthood. This indicates that BDNF and/or NT4/5 are important for the maintenance of the projection neurons in the entorhinal cortex at the adult stage. The strongest fl-Trk B immunoreactivity in the hippocampal neurons occurred at postnatal month 4, corresponding to the period of greatest synapse production in the monkey hippocampus, suggesting that BDNF and/or NT4/5 with fl-Trk B may play a role in synapse formation in the monkey hippocampus.

    Notes: Summary Psammoma bodies in meningocytic whorls were investigated by electron microscopy. In some whorls, connective tissue fibers were seen and membrane-bound vesicles were contiguous to degenerated cells. Some small vesicles, 0.1 to 0.5 μm in diameter, were outlined by plasma membrane (matrix vesicles), other larger ones, about 1 to several μm in diameter, were invested by a thick wall (matrix giant bodies). Mineralized deposits were frequent in these vesicles and occasionally large masses of mineralized connective tissue fibers (psammoma bodies) were seen. Analysis of the material in the mineralized vesicles and fibers, using an energy dispersive X-ray microanalyzer, showed that both calcium and phosphorous were evident and hydroxyapatite was substantiated using an X-ray differactometer. Psammoma body formation in the meningocytic whorls may represent degeneration in some whorls of the central cells which contain connective tissue fibers, producing cell debris such as membrane invested vesicles. Subsequently, calcification occurs in these vesicles, and the mineralization process extends to neighboring connective tissue fibers. The calcified mass forms a psammoma body.

    Notes: Summary Eight cases of central neurocytomas were studied by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. Seven tumors were located in the lateral ventricles and one in the subependymal region. All but one patient had a favorable postoperative course. The tumors were composed of small uniform cells possessing amitotic round nuclei with frequent perinuclear halos, a few Homer Wright rosettes and no ganglion cells; an appearance resembling that of oligodendroglioma. Immunohistochemical studies disclosed neuron-specific enolase and Leu-7 positivity in all tumors, S-100 protein-positive cells were found in six, while glial fibrillary acidic protein —and vimentin-positive cells were confined to the blood vessels. Myelin basic protein as well as neurofilament were not detected in the tumors. Synaptophysin-positive areas were seen in one tumor. Ultrastructural examination showed distinctive neuronal tumor cells which had a cytoplasm with sparse dense-core vesicles and thin cell processes containing parallel microtubules. They were classified into three different types of tumor cells according to the extent of differentiation. The most consistent finding for histological diagnosis was the presence of typical or abortive synapses with clear and dense-core vesicles. Additionally, synaptophysin may be a specific marker for some central neurocytomas.

    Notes: Summary Intracranial pressure (ICP) was recorded continuously in 12 pre-operative patients with angiographic evidence of diffuse cerebral arterial spasm due to a ruptured intracranial aneurysm. Recordings were made for 1 to 7 days, starting within 13 days after the haemorrhage. 1. An increased ICP was observed in the first week after subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) in 4 of the patients without any signs of angiographic arterial spasm. 2. This initial increase was regularly followed by a depression of ICP in between 7–12 days after SAH. In 11 out of 12 patients such a depression was concomitant with the beginning of arterial spasm. During the period of depressed ICP pattern, 6 patients showed little or no neurological deterioration, whereas 5 patients showed impaired consciousness or neurological deficits. 3. A secondary rise of ICP thereafter always followed due to ischaemic brain swelling or infarction, and was usually associated with a serious neurological deterioration. 4. Continuous ventricular drainage was performed to control the secondary increased ICP in 7 patients who survived, 4 of them with good clinical improvement and 3 with severe neurological deficits. 5. In the stage of depressed ICP, the administration of isoproterenol and steroids is recommended in order to try to alleviate the secondary rise of ICP.
