Notes: The transport process of sputtered Si atoms from the target to the substrate, crossing an argon-hydrogen plasma, is modeled by using Monte Carlo techniques. The hydrogen and argon partial pressures, the dark zone voltage, and the target-substrate distance are varied in the calculations. The effect of the above-mentioned parameters upon the thermalization and energy distribution of atoms arriving at the substrate is calculated, allowing the determination of the growth conditions that minimize the damage produced on the films by highly energetic atoms, while maintaining a reasonable growth rate.

Or, celle-ci débute vers 30 mois. Mieux vaut donc prévenir sa survenue par des ténotomies précoces et toujours bien tolérées plutôt que de la corriger par ostéotomie pelvienne, moins bien supportée par ces enfants fragiles.
Notes: Summary The development of dysplasia of the hip in cerebral palsy has been studied in 292 hips in children. The rate of migration of the hip has been defined, and gave a very early indication of the prognosis for the dysplasia. A close relationship was also found between the early radiographic changes and the functional locomotor anatomy. By reviewing the initial radiographs the need for early treatment and its adaptation to the future locomotor potential of the child can be assessed. Treatment is usually by musculotendinous releases and is especially effective in early recentring of the femoral head, but this method is ineffective in correcting bone dysplasia, particularly acetabular obliquity, which starts at around the age of 30 months. It is preferable to anticipate its development by early tenotomies which are much better tolerated than pelvic osteotomy in spastic children.

Notes: Summary The effects of α,β-methylene-adenosine triphosphate, (α,β-methylene ATP, a P2-receptor desensitising agent) have been evaluated on vasoconstrictor responses elicited by exogenous agonists or electrical field stimulation in isolated perfused SHR or WKY tail arteries and on tritium release elicited by electrical field stimulation in SHR-tail arteries pre-labeled with 3H-noradrenaline. Exposure to α,β-methylene ATP (0.1 μmol/l) significantly inhibited vasoconstrictor responses to electrical field stimulation in SHR tail arteries. These inhibitory effects were not further increased at a higher concentration of α,β-methylene ATP (1 μmol/l). In WKY tail arteries, α,β-methylene ATP (1 μmol/l) failed to significantly inhibit vasoconstrictor responses to electrical stimulation. In SHR tail arteries prelabelled with 3H-noradrenaline, α,β-methyleneATP (1 μmol/l) did not inhibit the stimulation evoked release of tritium. However, at this concentration, α,β-methylene ATP significantly antagonized the vasoconstrictor responses of SHR tail arteries induced by exogenous ATP (1 μmol/l), β,γ-methylene ATP (30 μmol/l), a stable agonist at P2-receptors, or 60 mmol/l KCl. These effects of α,β-methylene ATP on contractile responses to KCl were not observed in WKY-tail arteries. In tail arteries obtained from reserpine pretreated SHR, despite a 85–95% decrease in endogenous noradrenaline tissue content, the vasoconstrictor responses induced by periarterial field stimulation were greatly diminished, but not abolished. These residual responses to periarterial field stimulation were not antagonized by prazosin (0.1 μmol/l), but were practically abolished by the addition of α,β-methylene ATP (1 μmol/l). In tail arteries from WKY rats pretreated with reserpine, exposure to prazosin (0.1 μmol/l) further reduced the residual responses elicited by electrical field stimulation. In these WKY-tail arteries, addition of α,β-methylene ATP (1 μmol/l) did not further inhibit the remaining vasoconstrictor response obtained in the presence of prazosin. While our results suggest a significantly greater cotransmitter role for ATP with noradrenaline in tail arteries of SHR compared with control normotensive WKY rats, additional effects of α,β-methylene ATP not involving P2 receptors cannot be entirely excluded.

Notes: Summary The VP1 gene of foot-and-mouth disease virus (serotype C1) has been cloned in Escherichia coli Clts cells, under the control of the bacteriophage lambda p L promoter. The expressed VP1 protein was complete and non-fused, and its molecular weight was indistinguishable from that of the VP1 obtained from virions. Cells harbouring the recombinant vectors exhibited symptoms of plasmid instability and toxicity and died in a few weeks even when never exposed to inducing conditions. A new plasmid clone in which a segment of the VP1 gene was fused with contiguous genes of the viral genome was very stable. The expressed partial VP1 protein contains the two major immunogenic domains of the virion. This system can be used as a tool to design an immunogenic VP1, and to explore possible synthetic vaccines against foot-and-mouth disease.

Notes: Abstract In a 5-year-old boy, an early onset psychomotor retardation with nonprogressive ataxia and without dysmorphic features, associated with lysosomal storage disease found on ultrastructural examination of the conjunctiva, led to the diagnosis of Salla disease. This was supported by a tenfold excretion of urinary free sialic acid, without abnormal oligosacchariduria or anomaly in lysosomal enzymes. This boy is a native of Southern France. Screening of urinary sialic acid has to be introduced in aetiological investigations of patients with apparently non-progressive psychomotor retardation associated with ataxia or dystonic movements.

Notes: Summary The cellular and subcellular distribution of 2,4-dinitrophenyl (DNP) groups in the epidermis and regional lymph nodes of the mouse was investigated after epicutaneous application of 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) to sensitized and non-sensitized mice. The peroxidase-antiperoxidase method and the immunogold technique were used to visualize the DNP groups at both light and electron microscopic levels. The highest intensity of immunolabelling was found on tonofilaments of keratinocytes present in the upper layers of the epidermis. On the other hand, in vitro experiments showed that DNFB has the capacity to bind keratin which, together with immunocytochemistry, suggests that this molecule may be one of the skin protein carriers for DNFB. In addition, intense immunostaining for DNP was observed in the Golgi area of some epidermal Langerhans cells. Cells immunoreactive to DNP were also observed in the marginal sinus of cervical lymph nodes 6, 12 and 24 h after challenge. Immunoelectron microscopy revealed immunoreactive DNP groups in phagosomes of Langerhans cells at this site. The present findings support the hypothesis that the hapten DNFB penetrates passively into the cytoplasm of Langerhans cells, concentrates in the Golgi area and, during the migration of Langerhans cells to the lymph nodes, it is probably processed in the lysosomes before its presentation to T lymphocytes.
