Notes: Abstract The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of mechanical oral hygiene procedures on bleeding on probing in relation to age and periodontal status. The study was carried out on 49 indivuals divided into 7 experimental groups according to age and having been either treated for destructive periodontal disease or having an intact healthy periodontium. In order to eliminate any pre-existant gingival inflammation, all subjects received a carefully controlled oral hygiene program. At the start of the experiment, all subjects were instructed to abstain from oral hygiene procedures for 24 h. Thereafter, clinical baseline measurements were carried out, including bleeding on probing (BOP) using a standardized probing pressure. Next, all subjects cleaned their teeth according to their normal oral home care protocol using a multitufted toothbrush, toothpicks and interdental brushes. BOP scores were again assessed 30 min after completed tooth cleaning procedures. The results revealed a significant increase in BOP after the mechanical oral hygiene procedures in every individual in all experimental groups (p 〈0.05). Further analysis showed that the increase in BOP was independent of the periodontal status of the subjects. However the BOP scores after mechanical oral hygiene procedures were higher in the young age groups. It was concluded that the diagnostic predictability of BOP in the treatment of periodontal diseases might be affected by temporarily elevated BOP scores shortly after mechanical oral hygiene procedures.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The subject of this paper is to describe a possible solution for the planning of an intramurual transportation of goods by heuristics for the travelling salesman problem and its generalizations. The investigation was performed for the Deutsche Lufthansa AG at the airport of Frankfurt/Main intending to improve the internal transportation system for the supply of the maintenance center. This paper contains a description of the current system, a new model of the transportation system and computational results obtained by a heuristic algorithm with real-world data.

Notes: Summary Coronary artery disease causes an increase in glutamate uptake and alanine output by the heart. We assessed the effects of acute myocardial ischemia on alanine and glutamate exchange and ammonia production in 10 anesthetized open-chest domestic swine (46.9±0.7 kg). Coronary blood flow was controlled through an extracorporal perfusion circuit. After a nonischemic control period (aerobic) the blood flow in the left anterior descending coronary artery was reduced by 60%. Arterial and anterior interventricular venous samples where drawn before and during 35 min of ischemia. Subendocardial blood flow, measured using radiolabeled microspheres, decreased from 1.27±0.16 to 0.25±0.09 (ml/g)/min, and left-ventricular wall-thickening fell to 47% of aerobic values. Ischemia resulted in a significant increase in the rate of glucose uptake (p〈0.05) and a switch to net lactate production (p〈0.01). Ischemia did not affect the rates of alanine output (−0.9±1.0 vs. −0.3±0.3 μmol/min) or glutamate uptake (−0.4±1.1 vs. 0.3±0.6 μmol/min), but did increase the venous-arterial difference for ammonia (−4.1±4.1 to 52.7±5.5 μM, p〈0.0001) and the ammonia output (−0.33±0.24 to 1.34±0.14 μmol/min, p〈0.0001). In conclusion, acute ischemia did not stimulate greater alanine output or glutamate uptake. However, acute ischemia did cause an increase in anaerobic glycolysis rate and ammonia output, which reflects a profound disruption in myocardial energy metabolism.

Notes: Abstract As part of a group contribution study on the liquid thermal conductivity of synthetic fuel components, experiments were performed to study the effects of dimethyl and ethyl-group additions to cyclohexane. A transient hot-wire apparatus was used to measure the thermal conductivity of these three fluids between ambient pressure and 10.4 MPa over a temperature range of 300 to 460 K. Thermal conductivities measured with this instrument have been assigned an accuracy of ±2% based upon a standard deviation comparison with a toluene standard established by Nieto de Castro et al. (1986). The thermal conductivities and excess thermal conductivities of the naphthenes investigated have been successfully linearized by plotting the data versus reduced density exponentiated to the power of five. By using data previously reported by Perkins (1983) and Li et al. (1984), this linear reduced density method is demonstrated for methyl, dimethyl, and ethyl additions to cyclohexane, as well as methyl and dimethyl additions to benzene. The naphthenes have been shown to have similar intercepts, with slope changes dependent upon the functional group attached to cyclohexane. The aromatics have a less pronounced slope change with additional functional groups attached to the benzene base. This instrument was also used to determine heat capacities, via the thermal diffusivity, to within ±10%.
