Notes: Abstract In fusion reactions of58Ni beams with54Pe and58Ni target nuclei neutron deficient evaporation residues have been produced and separated from the beam in an electrostatic deflector with large acceptance. The recoil nuclei were implanted and detected in an array of 100 PIN photodiodes, where also their particle decays were recorded. The assignment of the 0.81 MeV proton line to the decay of109I could be experimentally proven by the observation, that it is followed by the 3.31 MeV alpha emission from108Te. A proton decay from112Cs was not observed. The decay energies of a number of known α emitters have been measured with better precision.

Notes: Summary The influence of in vitro application of the cytostatic agents titanocene dichloride (TDC), vanadocene dichloride (VDC), and cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II) (DDP) on the cytokinetic behavior of EAT cells was investigated. All three substances induced similar cytokinetic phenomena that are characterized on the one hand, by an accumulation of cells in the late S phase and in the G2 phase during exposure periods of 8 to 20 h. On the other hand, some cells were apparently arrested at the end of the G1 phase and, after removal of the cytostatic agents, moved through the following S, G2, and M phases as synchronized cell populations. In view of this unusual cytokinetic pattern of multiple effects, it is argued that the striking similarities in cytokinetic behavior after treatment with the three different cytostatic substances indicate analogies in their molecular mechanisms of action. The different alteration patterns observed after in vivo application of the drugs are obviously due to additional processes occurring only in vivo.

Notes: Abstract The High Altitude Observatory Coronagraph/Polarimeter, to be flown on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Solar Maximum Mission satellite, is designed to produce images of the solar corona in seven wavelength bands in the visible spectral range. The spectral bands have been chosen to specifically exclude or include ‘chromospheric’ spectral lines, so as to allow discrimination between ejecta at high (coronal) and low (chromospheric) temperatures, respectively. In addition, the instrument features spectral filters designed to permit an accurate color separation of the F and K coronal components, and a narrow band (5.5 Å) filter to observe the radiance and polarization of the Fe xiv 5303 Å line. The effective system resolution is better than 10 arc sec and the instrument images a selected quadrant (or smaller field) on an SEC vidicon detector. The total height range that may be recorded encompasses 1.6 to more than 6.0R ⊙ (from Sun center). The instrument is pointed independently of the SMM spacecraft, and its functions are controlled through the use of a program resident within the onboard spacecraft computer. Major experimental goals include: (a) Observation of the role of the corona in the flare process and of the ejecta from the flare site and the overlying corona; (b) the study of the direction of magnetic fields in stable coronal forms, and, perhaps, ejecta; and (c) examination of the evolution of the solar corona near the period of solar maximum activity.

Notes: Abstract By means of a photographic polarimeter, we attempted to measure both the amount and direction of linear polarization of all emission lines between 3400 and 9000 Å in the inner corona (1.034 ≤ r/r 0 ≤ 1.085). Only the green and red coronal lines have been analyzed in detail. Neither of these lines shows polarization exceeding the probable error of 1.0% for λ 5303 and 1.8% for λ 6374. None of the other 17 coronal lines observed during the 7 March, 1970 solar eclipse show any obvious (〉5%) polarization.

Notes: Abstract A fast coronal transient event was observed simultaneously on 17 February 1972 by the Sacramento Peak Observatory 6-in. λ 5303 filter coronagraph and the High Altitude Observatory K-coronameter. We interpret the rapid opening of green line structure cospatial with the disappearance of a white light streamer as material motion of iron ions and electrons. Together with the subsequent two-fold increase in K-corona brightness in an adjacent region, this is taken as evidence of a transference of electrons to a new streamer in a realignment of magnetic flux tubes accompanying a flare.

Notes: Abstract More than six hours after the two-ribbon flare of 21 May 1980, the hard X-ray spectrometer aboard the SMM imaged an extensive arch above the flare region which proved to be the lowest part of a stationary post-flare noise storm recorded at the same time at Culgoora. The X-ray arch extended over 3 or more arc minutes to a projected distance of 95 000 km, and its real altitude was most probably between 110 000 and 180 000 km. The mean electron density in the cloud was close to 109 cm−3 and its temperature stayed for many hours at a fairly constant value of about 6.5 × 106 K. The bent crystal spectrometer aboard the SMM confirms that the arch emission was basically thermal. Variations in brightness and energy spectrum at one of the supposed footpoints of the arch seem to correlate in time with radio brightness suggesting that suprathermal particles from the radio noise regions dumped in variable quantities into the low corona and transition layer; these particles may have contributed to the population of the arch, after being trapped and thermalized. The arch extended along the H ∥ = 0 line thus apparently hindering any upward movement of the upper loops reconnected in the flare process. There is evidence from Culgoora that this obstacle may have been present above the flare since 15–30 min after its onset.

Notes: Abstract Multi-telescope observations of the coronal transient of 15–16 April, 1980 provide simultaneous data from the Solar Maximum Mission Coronagraph/Polarimeter, the Solwind Coronagraph, and the new Emission Line Coronagraph of the Sacramento Peak Observatory. An eruptive prominence-associated white light transient is for the first time seen as an unusual wave or brightening in Fe x gl6374 (but not in Fe xiv gl5303). Several interpretations of this fleeting enhancement are offered. The prominence shows a slowly increasing acceleration which peaks at the time of the Fe event. The white light loop transient surrounding the prominence expands at a well-documented constant speed to 10R ⊙, with an extrapolated start time at zero height coincident with the surface activity. This loop transient exemplifies those seen above 1.7R ⊙ in that leading the disturbance is a bright (N e-enhanced) loop rather than dark. This is consistent with a report of the behavior of another eruptive event observed by Fisher and Poland (1981) which began as a density depletion in the lower corona, with a bright loop forming at greater altitudes. The top of the bright loop ultimately fades in the outer corona while slow radial growth continues in the legs.

Notes: Abstract Photographic averaging of cine-camera data-frames from the 7 March 1970 eclipse provided a record of the inner white light corona with unusually high resolution for low-contrast features. We report that a coronal void, similar to high corona structures associated with prominence formation (MacQueen et al., 1983), extended low into the corona. During eclipse totality, a coronal rain prominence condensed from the base of the void.
