    Notes: Abstract We propose a compressible bag model, in which a nucleon bag responds microscopic thermal pressure of the other bags. The volume exclusion effect and the particle exchange type interaction ensure the saturation property of the nucleus at normal density and bring about the deconfinement transition in high density region. The critical values of chemical potential and baryon number density for nuclear/neutron matter are estimated. Our equation of state is applied to neutron stars, and shown to be consistent with the observed rotation periods of millisecond pulsars.

    Notes: Summary During heart development in the chick some of the endocardial cells that cover the cushion areas leave the cushion endocardium, seed the underlying cardiac jelly, and are transformed into mesenchyme. Cushion mesenchymal (CM) cells migrate from the endocardium toward the myocardium using the cardiac jelly as substratum. Developing cushions have been microinjected with fibronectin (FN), antifibronectin antibodies (AbFN), and four synthetic peptide probes. Two of these peptides (P7 and P10) contained the sequence Arg-GlyAsp-Ser (RGDS), while the other two (P15 and PColl) did not. Cushion area, individual cell area, cell density, cell orientation and a factor of form were evaluated in both experimental and control cushions. CM cell migration was inhibited by FN and AbFN, only partially inhibited by P10 and unaffected by P7. Cushions injected with P15 and PColl were unaffected. These results can be explained by steric modifications of the extracellular matrix, that may render cardiac jelly nonpermissive for CM cell migration, or by interaction of the substances injected at the endocardial cell surface. Migrating CM cells do not present any preferential orientation in any particular direction. CM cell migration seems to depend upon intrinsic migratory behaviour and the presence of FN at the CM cell surface. The enforcement of the direction of CM cell migration does not appear to rely upon matrix signals but be the result of randomly migrating cells becoming distributed more evenly in the matrix.

    Notes: Summary Purkinje cells from five autopsy cases (a premature newborn infant, a GM1-gangliosidosis, an olivo-ponto-cerebellar atrophy, a multisystem atrophy involving the spinal cord and the brain stem, and a woman of 82 years) were studied using the Golgi impregnation technique. The results were the following: (1) the Purkinje cells showed different abnormalities in each case; (2) the dedrite and cell body showed not only involutive/degenerative but also progressive/plastic changes at the same time in some cases; (3) Purkinje cells which appeared normal in routine histological preparations showed, in some cases, abnormalities of the dendrite and cell body; (4) the abnormality common to the five cases was the loss of branchlet-spines and/or spiny branchlets, probably resulting in loss of the granule cell-Purkinje cell connection. It is discussed that the Golgi technique as applied to morbid human material will be an indispensable tool in the future for the analysis of disease processes on cellular and neurobiological bases.

    Notes: Abstract The fundamental absorption edge of evaporated WO3 films is investigated. The optical gap of the virgin film is estimated to be 3.41 eV at room temperature and it decreases with increase of annealing temperature up to 200°C. Annealing at 300°C leads to change in the spectral shape, which is caused by crystallization. For the films annealed at 200°C, temperature coefficient of the optical gap is estimated to be −2×10−4 eV/K and the slope of Urbach's tail is found to be independent of measuring temperature up to 200°C. With electrolytic coloration, shift of the optical gap toward higher energy is observed. Magnitude of this shift is estimated to be 0.05 eV at the color center concentration of 7.5×1021 cm−3 when H+ electrolyte is used. If Li+ electrolyte is used, the magnitude of this shift is about three times larger than in the case of H+ electrolyte. This fact is interpreted by a small change in the host matrix structure owing to the injection of proton or Li+ during coloration.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents the point-defect thermodynamics for fayalite and olivine solid solutions (Fe x Mg1−x )2SiO4. By means of thermogravimetry, the metal-to-oxygen ratio of these silicates has been determined as a function of oxygen potential, compositionx and temperature. Experiments were performed in the range of 1,000° C≦T≦1,280° C and 0.2≦x≦1.0. It is found that V Me ″ , Fe Me · and the associate {Fe′ Si ′ Fe Me · } are the majority defects. With this knowledge it is possible to calculate the nonstoichiometry at given temperature as a function of $$p_{O_2 } $$ and $$a_{SiO_2 } $$ . The cation vacancy concentration shows a $$p_{O_2 }^{1/5} $$ -dependence (forx≧0.2) and increases at givenT and $$p_{O_2 } $$ almost exponentially with compositionx. In the composition range studied here, the silicates show an oxygen excess, and FeO is more soluble in the olivine than SiO2.

    Notes: Summary By transferring a semidwarf gene (sd-1) from Taichung Native 1 into a tall Japanese cultivar, Norin 29, through seven backcrosses, a semidwarf near-isogenic line SC-TN1 was obtained. The proteins of the embryo in Norin 29 and SC-TN1 were separated by two-dimensional electrophoresis. Most of the proteins showed the same electrophoretic pattern. However, it was found that there was a difference in the appearance of two basic glycoproteins designated as SRP-1 and SRP-2. These proteins exhibited the same molecular mass, but different isoelectric points. Hybridization results indicated that a single locus controls SRP-1 and SRP-2 with codominant alleles. The gene symbol Srp was given to this locus, with alleles Srp-1 and Srp-2 responsible for SRP-1 and SRP-2, respectively. Srp-2 was found in all of the semidwarf cultivars and lines having sd-1, except a tall cultivar Tsaiyuan-chung. This finding suggests that Srp-2 may be closely linked with sd-1. The amounts of these proteins markedly increased after water absorption of the seed, suggesting that these proteins may be related to the early development of the plant.
