Notes: A plasma-mixing device in which a helium plasma beam is crossed with a molecular nitrogen beam was used to measure the branching ratio of the excitation of individual vibrational levels of the B2Σ electronic state of the molecular nitrogen ion in charge-transfer collisions between He+2 ions and ground-state N2 molecules. The branching ratio of the excitation of individual vibrational levels of the C3Π electronic state of the neutral nitrogen molecule due to the resonant energy-transfer collisions between argon metastables and ground-state nitrogen molecules was also measured using a plasma beam of a mixture of argon and helium. These results allow comparison of our measurements with results obtained using other techniques.

Notes: A model for an abnormal glow discharge, including a self-consistent analysis of the cathode fall, was developed. It combines microscopic particle simulation by means of Monte Carlo methods with a fluid model of the gas discharge. The model allows calculations of the steady-state electrical field distribution, the charged-particle densities, and the current densities along the axis of the discharge. The model was used to simulate a glow discharge in 80% He and 20% SF6 at a pressure of 8 Torr with a current density of 1 A/cm2. The computed discharge voltage agrees well with measured values. The computer code can easily be modified to describe the charged-particle densities and energies not only in the cathode fall region, but in any plasma boundary layer.

Notes: Abstract Membranes of the extremely thermoacidophilic archaeon Desulfurolobus ambivalens grown under aerobic conditions contain a quinol oxidase of the cytochrome aa3-type as the most prominent hemoprotein. The partially purified enzyme consists of three polypeptide subunits with apparent molecular masses of 40, 27 and 20 kDa and contains two heme A molecules and one copper atom. CO difference spectra suggest one heme to be a heme a3-centre. The EPR spectra indicate the presence of a low-spin and a high-spin heme species. Redox titrations of the solubilized enzyme show the presence of two reduction processes, with apparent potentials of + 235 and + 330 mV. The enzyme cannot oxidize reduced cytochrome c, but rather serves as an oxidase of caldariella quinone. Due to their very simple composition, D. ambivalens cell appear as a promising candidate to study Structure-function relationships of cytochrome aa3 in the integral membrane state.

Notes: Summary This study of the effect of high-dose intravenous gammaglobulins with one or two courses of therapy in 18 adults with idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura showed a platelet rise in thirteen patients. The highest response rates were seen in splenectomized adults. In chronic patients the response was transient only. If therapy was effective, increased values of platelet-associated IgG were reduced, while shortened platelet survival times were prolonged. There was no influence of high-dose gammaglobulins on platelet function. Different 7S-preparations such as β-propiolactone modified Ig, pH 4 treated Ig and reduced and alkylated Ig have comparable effects.

Notes: Abstract Neuropathologic evaluation of two infants with thanatophoric dysplasra displayed typical gross morphologic characteristics and a distinct pattern of brain malformations, including anomalies of the temporal lobe gyri and hippocampus, neuroglial heterotopias, fiber tract hypoplasia, and dysplasia of deep nuclei. Increased numbers of horizontal cells of Cajal-Retzius were striking in frequency and distrbution. The pattern of abnormalities suggests arrest of cerebral cortical ontogeny late in development. As with the mucopolysaccharidoses, a shared common metabolic pathway is a potential mechanism for development of widespread bony and somatic abnormalities and associated central nervous system anomalies.

Notes: Abstract The present study contributes to the problem of the dynamic structure of mitochondrial F1-ATPase and the functional interrelation of so-called tight nucleotide binding sites. Nucleotide analogs are used as a tool to differentiate two distinct functional states of the membrane-bound enzyme, proposed to reflect corresponding conformational states; they reveal F1-ATPase as a “dual-state” enzyme: ATP-synthetase, and ATP-hydrolase. The analogs used are 3′-naphthoyl esters of AD(T)P, and 2′(3′)-O-trinitrophenyl ethers of AD(T)P. Both types of analogs act inversely to each other with respect to their relative effects on oxidative phosphorylation and on ATPase in submitochondrial vesicles. The respective ratios ofK i versus both processes are 250/1 compared to 1/170. It is also shown that in the presence of the inhibitory 3′-esters oxidative phosphorylation deviates from linear kinetics and that these inhibitors induce a lag time of oxidative phosphorylation depending on the initial pattern of nucleotides available to energized submitochondrial vesicles. The duration of the lag time coincides with the time course of displacement of the analog from a tight binding site. The conclusions of the study are: (a) the catalytic sites of F1-ATP-synthetase are not operating independently from each other; they rather interact in a cooperative manner; (b) F1-ATPase as a “dual-state” enzyme exhibits highly selective responses to tight binding of nucleotides or analogs in its “energized” (membrane-bound) state versus its “nonenergized” state, respectively.

Notes: Summary Experimental bum injuries in the dorsal thoracolumbar region of rats were covered by skin mesh grafts. In the treated group, fibrin adhesive (Tissucol) was also applied. Fourteen days after transplantation planimetric localization of the remaining wound area, microangiographic, histologic and thermographic studies demonstrated a better healing of the transplant additionally treated with fibrin adhesive. This can be explained by the fibrin-initiated contact with the wound and the hemostyptic effect of the fibrin adhesive.
