Notes: In this article, the power spectra of the Barkhausen noise of Ni1−xMnx is presented. The measurements were made in the ferromagnetic phase at several temperatures and manganese concentrations in order to map the effects of the degree of disorder and of the temperature on domain wall dynamics. Measurements in standard ferromagnetic materials were also made to compare the dynamics in both cases.

Notes: Diffuse X-ray scattering in Li3N has been investigated in the range 293 to 880 K with monochromatic Mo Kα radiation. Crystal and film were fixed during the exposure. Diffuse intensity in the form of rods and discs was found. It increased with increasing temperature but without change of its features. The diffuse intensity distribution was calculated for various temperatures on the basis of an anisotropic shell model. Good agreement with the experimental results was achieved. The anharmonic effects detected in the difference electron density were studied taking into account split positions for the Li ions. This simulation leads to only minor changes in the calculated intensity distribution which indicates that the diffuse intensity of Li3N is mainly caused by harmonic lattice vibrations.

Notes: Summary A patient developed asterixis 13 weeks after starting a therapy with carbamazepine. Serum concentration of carbamazepine was within the therapeutic levels. Further factors which might have provoked asterixis were an impairment of pulmonary function and the combination with a neuroleptic and lithium. Since the latter risk factors had already been present for a long time, it may be assumed that the addition of carbamzepine triggered the development of asterixis.

Notes: Summary A 20-month-old girl with massive digitoxin intoxication (initial digitoxin serum level: 629 ng/ml) was successfully treated with digoxin-specific antibody fragments (Fab). She presented with moderate signs of digitalis toxicity (somnolence, bradycardia, first-degree AV block) and improved rapidly during fractional Fab administration. Free serum-digitoxin disappeared after 6 vials of Fab (480 mg), but was measurable again on days 6 and 7. This case demonstrated that digoxin-specific antibodies, despite a 30–100 times lesser affinity for digitoxin, are effective in massive digitoxin intoxications. A rebound phenomenon may occur several days later and should be taken into consideration.

Notes: Abstract We present a high statistics study of the leptonic decay constantf P of heavy pseudoscalar mesons using propagating heavy Wilson quarks within the quenched approximation, on lattices covering sizes from about 0.7 fm to 2 fm. Varying β between 5.74 and 6.26 we observe a sizeablea dependence off P when one uses the quark field normalization that was suggested by Kronfeld and Mackenzie, compared with the weaker depence observed for the standard relativistic norm. The two schemes come into agreement when one extrapolates toa→0. The extrapolations needed to reach the continuum quantityf B introduce large errors and lead to the valuef B =0.18(5) GeV in the quenched approximation. This suggests that much more effort will be needed to obtain an accurate lattice prediction forf B .

Notes: Drastic changes occur during the initial stages of the α-olefin polymerization over heterogeneous catalysts. Fragmentation of the support takes place as polymer is formed at the active sites within the voids of the support/catalyst. Magnesium chloride-supported titanium catalyst/polymer particles have been analyzed employing high-resolution computed microtomography (CMT) using synchrotron radiation at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The changes in morphology, the spatial distribution of the support/catalyst fragments, porosity, and polymer distribution in single growing polypropylene and polyethylene particles have been studied. These studies documented considerable macroporosity ( 〉 2 μm in size) within the growing catalyst/support/polymer particles. The largest pores may be due to agglomeration of smaller subparticles. Our results confirm that the initial fragmentation of the support proceeds readily and uniformly to yield a multi-grain growth of subparticle agglomerates. The support/catalyst fragments appear to be distributed relatively uniformly within the growing polymer particle. The surface of the subparticle agglomerates is accessible through the void-space between growing catalyst/particle grains. This may facilitate monomer transport to the activate sites through the polymer/catalyst particles. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Recently considerable detail has become available on the initial morphology and the morphological changes that occur for silica based Cr catalysts for ethylene polymerization. These catalysts are produced as a dry powder and may be employed either in gas phase or in slurry processes. MgCl2-supported Ziegler-Natta polymerization catalysts are often prepared and employed as slurries. They usually are never dried and thus few studies have employed the spectra of physical techniques common to the characterization of pore structure. In the current study, we have carefully removed the solvent for both ball-milled and precipitated MgCl2-supported catalysts. These catalysts are characterized by physical sorption, mercury porosimetry, and electron microscopy both as prepared and during the initial stages of polymerization (to ∼ 100 g of polymer/g of catalyst). We find that the initial catalyst may be represented by a complex agglomerate of small crystallites as contrasted with the branched pore network found in Cr/silica catalysts. As a result, it is concluded that the initial fragmentation of the MgCl2 based systems is more uniform as contrasted with the progressive fragmentation of the silica-based system. This fragmentation mechanism facilitates the retention of greater polymer/catalyst surface during the initial stages of the polymerization. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary If the concentration of elements with Z〉22 (Ti) is to be determined in mineral samples and if the concentration of any of these elements is greater than ≈ 1%, the sample is diluted by grinding it together with an appropriate amount of quartz powder in an agate mortar mill. The diluted sample is measured in powdered form in a spectro-cup at practically infinite thickness by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence; the counting rates are corrected by means of the Compton scattering peak and evaluated by use of calibration curves obtained by measuring standards on the basis of silica gel. The applicability of this method is established by measuring the concentrations of 12 elements with Z〉22 in 14 mineral samples of varying composition.

Notes: The construction of a mobile XRF unit is described. It consists of a radionuclide source (109Cd), shielding, a sample exchanger for powdered samples, a semiconductor detector and an electronic measuring and evaluation system. The disadvantage of the supply of liquid nitrogen or liquid air for the semiconductor detector is avoided by use of a mobile unit for the production of liquid air constructed for this purpose. Numerous measurements were carried out at several location within the Federal Republic of Germany.
