Notes: Abstract This paper describes a new application of optical heterodyne detection using a laser beam for two-dimensional imaging of the internal structure of strongly scattering media in which the structure is completely obstructed from normal visual observation. The directional resolution capability for image formation due to the excellent antenna properties of the heterodyne technique is verified experimentally using a ground glass to cause strong scattering of the signal beam. Successful image detection of a test target placed in a highly scattering absorptive medium, with spatial resolution better than 400 μm in the case of our experiments, demonstrates that this Coherent Detection Imaging (CDI) method can overcome the diffuse nature of images in media such as those of biomedical interest and others to achieve scanning and tomographic imaging.

Notes: Abstract Monodispersed TiO2 particles were used to prepare a uniformly packed green compact with a high relative density by slip casting. A suspension consisting of monodispersed TiO2 particles, solvent and binder was cast in the mould. The sintering behaviour of the green compact was investigated. The green compact could be sintered to a relative density of 〉 99% by treatment at 1050 °C for 120 min. The average grain size of the sintered body was 1.26 μm without abnormal grain growth. The green sheet cast on a glass board could be densified with no grain growth. The experimentally obtained relation between densification rate and grain size indicated a volume diffusion mechanism according to Coble's equation.

Notes: Summary Three Japanese patients with carbonic anhydrase II (CAII) deficiency from three families were described. The parents of one patient were unrelated, the parents of each of the other two patients were first cousins. All the patients had renal tubular acidosis, osteopetrosis, symmetrical cerebral calcification and mental retardation. They exhibited poor activity and poor appetite in the neonatal period, and then developed psychomotor retardation. Two of them were diagnosed as having osteopetrosis at 10 months and 36 years of age, respectively, and the other as having osteomalacia at 28 years of age. All patients had recurrent episodes of muscle weakness. The CAII enzyme activity and protein levels in red blood cells in each of the three patients were deficient. Their parents exhibited approximately 50% normal levels of CAII activity and protein. This is the first report of patients with CAII deficiency in the Japanese population.

Notes: Abstract Nuclear polarization was measured by means of beam foil spectroscopy for a3He+ ion produced by an electron capture process of a3He2+ from a polarized sodium atom in an incident energy range from 20 to 28 keV. Assuming that a polarized electron of a sodium atom is predominantly captured to the 3d orbital of a3He+ ion andcascades down to the 1s ground state via the 2p orbital, an alignment factorA 0 col (L=2) for the 3d orbital of a3He+ ion was extracted by comparing the observed initial sodium polarization andfinal nuclear polarization. The observedA 0 col (L=2) showed a less pronounced energy dependence andwere qualitatively reproduced by the theoretical calculation.

Notes: Abstract A polarized heavy ion source based on spin and charge exchange collisions and laser optical pumping succeeded in producing a nuclear polarized3He+ beam. A brief description is given on a prerequisite as a practical heavy ion source and on an external injection system by which the polarized3He beam will be injected into the RCNP isochronous cyclotron.

Notes: Microinterferometry was applied as a quantitative method for determining the transversal distribution of graft concentration instead of the usual determination of an overall graft concentration of the radiation-induced polypropylene-styrene graft copolymer. Since polystyrene has a higher refractive index than polypropylene, the features of the interference fringe provide direct visualization of the distribution curve of graft concentration. The application of the method leads to clarify the effects of radiation dose rate, film thickness, monomer concentration, temperature, and grafting technique on the graft composition. A retardative effect on grafting appears in the vicinity of the surface, when the grafting is performed in lower radiation field and with thinner film. This is well explained by the variation in the grafting rate constant as a function of monomer concentration in the film. Furthermore, the post-irradiation effect and accelerative effect of methanol were followed. They act effectively to form the surface, volumetric, and embedded grafts. The method has also proved useful in routine examination for a qualitative estimate of the graft copolymer.

Notes: A protein liquid membrane composed of coacervated α-elastin, a chemical fragmentation product of the biological elastic fiber protein, functioned as an amphoteric liquid ion-exchange membrane. Ionic permselectivities of the α-elastin coacervate membrane to a series of metal chlorides were investigated for the concentration-cell systems by the ordinary electrochemical measurements. Effects of pH on the transmembrane potential responses for NaCl, CaCl2, and MgCl2 systems were examined. Only in the Ca2+ -containing system did potential responses stay at constant levels against the pH changes, whereas in the other systems, increasing pH caused potential changes, indicating a improvement of cationic permselectivity across the α-elastin coacervate membrane. It was suggested that the characteristic Ca2+ transport mechanisms across the α-elastin coacervate membrane are related in some way to the polypeptide backbone interactions specific and selective to Ca2+ ions. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
