Notes: Abstract The previously unknown nucleus118Cs has been identified through γ-γ and γ-recoil coincidences using the GASP γ-spectrometer and Recoil Mass Spectrometer. The level scheme constructed on the base of triple γ coincidences shows a collective structure based on the π−1g9/2⊗νh11/2 configuration.

Notes: Abstract Velocity distributions of heavy residuesA Res〉A tar,Z Res〉Z tar identified by means ofα spectroscopy, have been investigated at the velocity filter SHIP in reactions20Ne+208Pb at projectile energies E/A=8.6, 11.4 and 15.0 MeV/u. Besides products from complete or nearly complete fusion, characterized by velocity distributions peaking atν/ν CN≅0.8–1.0, heavy residues with mean velocities of about half of the compound nucleus velocity were observed. The Z-distribution of this component was found to peak atZ=87. It is interpreted as residues from fusion of target nuclei with projectile fragments produced by nearly symmetric break-up. The experimental results were compared with predictions of theoretical models: cross sections for incomplete fusion were calculated using the sum-rule model of Wilcynski et al., while residue cross sections were calculated using the evaporation code HIVAP. A fair agreement between experimental and calculated mass distributions of heavy residues and transferred projectile fragments is achieved if an energy dissipation of ≅23% (at E/A=8.6 MeV/u) and ≅8% (at E/A=11.4 MeV/u) of the incident projectile energy is introduced. The observed peak of theZ-distribution atZ=87 is predominantly effected due to a higher fission probability of products withZ〉87 during the deexcitation process and experimental limitations in the identification of products withZ≦86 by means of a spectroscopy, which cause a decrease of the observed production rates towards lowerZ.

Notes: Summary In order to have a rapid method of measuring the inhibition of calcium-oxalate monohydrate growth in freshly voided whole urine, a test system by Meyer and Smith that has originally been developed for diluted urine was modified. The crystallization processes were monitored by an ion-selective calcium electrode, which allowed determination of the half-life value of the decrease in calcium within 25 min. Even given the high inhibitory activity of whole urine, the test gave reliable results when a high seed concentration was used. Inhibition was expressed as the ratio between the half-lives of the calcium decrease obtained in the presence and in the absence of inhibitors. This approach allowed kinetic studies of individual inhibitors in model solutions. Furthermore, the measurements of inhibitors in urine could be, performed before the chemical composition was determined.

Notes: Summary The most important measure in the prophylaxis of idiopathic calcium urolithiasis is dietary advice. Patients should be kept to a high-fluid intake, increasing their diuresis by at least 0.51. The mineral content of drinking water seems to be of minor importance, but the liquid should be low in carbohydrates and oxalate. The intake of animal proteins should be reduced to no more than five meals with meat, fish or poultry per week. Excesses of oxalate-rich food must be avoided. The daily intake of calcium in dairy products should be in the range of 800–1200 mg. Sodium and refined carbohydrates should be moderately restricted. Medical treatment is indicated only in cases of recurrence under the appropriate diet. Selective treatment according to urinary chemical composition is favoured; alkali citrate, thiazides, allopurinol, and pyridoxine are of major interest.

Notes: Abstract An extensively updated version of the EQUIL software is described. The former version, designated EQUIL2, is widely used to study urolithiasis and related areas of biomineralization. In this report, we discuss recent enhancements which give EQUIL93 an expanded scope of application. This program has been frequently used in studies of the physicochemical processes underlying stone salt crystallization, especially crystal growth and nucleation, but it has also been employed as an aid for in vivo research and as an evaluator of therapeutic measures. We illustrate several new applications, including some outside the urologic realm, and we discuss how the enhanced software can be helpful in stone risk assessments.

Notes: Abstract We used a Tracker-18 perfusion catheter and microcoils to embolise a renal pseudoaneurysm caused by blunt trauma with rupture of kidney, haemorrhage and persistent haematuria. Conservative management can be employed to treat serious renal trauma provided that the source of the bleeding can successfully be embolised with superselective techniques.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract When cooling a vapor-gas-mixture heat and mass transfer take place under other conditions than in case of pure vapor condensation. With a small vapor content the analogy between heat and mass transfer can be considered valid; with a great vapor content, however, corrective factors are necessary. Within certain ranges these factors may be simplified. The choice of the equation for the diffusion boundary layer corresponding to the stream conditions is of great importance. A simplified calculation method for an approximate determination of the cooling area is reported.

Notes: Abstract The population strengths of excited states in nuclei produced via transfer reactions in the 185 MeV32S +208Pb reaction have been investigated by heavy-ion-γ coincidence techniques. The cross sections extracted from the γ spectra, have been analyzed in the framework of the Complex WKB approximation theory.

Notes: Abstract The neutron-deficient isotopes226Np and227Np were produced in the bombardment of a 380μg/cm2 209Bi target with22Ne projectiles at an incident beam energy of 5.5 MeV/u. They were identified using the α-α time-correlation method /1/.226Np was found to decay with Eα=(8044±20) keV andT 1/2=(31±8) ms. For227Np two α-lines were observed at (7650±20) keV and (7677±20) keV with a half-life of (510±60) ms. The gas-filled separator NASE installed at GSI Darmstadt was used to separate the evaporation residues inflight.

Notes: Abstract The fusion of the massive systems110Pd+104Ru and110Pd+110Pd was uniquely identified by observing the a decay of the evaporation residues. The observed distribution of the fusion cross section on the different evaporation-residue channels is in clear contradiction to calculations based on the compound-nucleus model. As a possible explanation the precompound evaporation of a particles is proposed.
