    Notes: Objective To investigate the magnitude and pattern of the changes in bone mass during five years of continuous and cyclic sequential oestrogen/progestin treatment.Design Prospective study of normal, early postmenopausal women, initially a double-blind, placebo controlled trial, subsequently an open, controlled investigation.Setting Clinical physiology unit of a general hospital.Subjects Sixty-eight normal, early postmenopausal women.Results 1. Continuous treatment resulted in significantly higher lumbar spine bone density than did sequential treatment (P 〈 0.001). Lumbar spine bone density was 19% and 15%, respectively, above that of untreated women after three years and onwards, and 10% and 6%, respectively, above the initial value; 2. Both regimens induced a more pronounced rise in lumbar spine bone density than in forearm bone mineral content (P 〈 0.001); 3. The spontaneous decline (without treatment) in lumbar spine bone density and forearm bone mineral content averaged 1.86% and 1.90% per year, respectively. 4. There was a significant bone loss from the lumbar spine during the last year of active treatment (P 〈 0.001). This would suggest that lumbar spine bone density rises to a certain level and subsequently declines. However, neither data pooled before computation nor data processed individually for each patient over five years allowed for any definite conclusions regarding the pattern of the long term skeletal response to combined oestrogen/progestin treatment.Conclusion Five years treatment with oestradiol/norethisterone resulted in a substantial gain in bone mass. The highest values were found in the axial skeleton with daily administration of 2 mg oestradiol and 1 mg norethisterone. It is likely that bone mass after an absolute rise begins to decline after about four years of treatment.

    Notes: A novel circuit is described which functions as an electronic analog of lumped element transmission line. The circuit requires only operational amplifiers, resistors, and capacitors. This module was coupled to a Josephson junction simulator and current voltage characteristics of the combined system were recorded. Steps were observed at voltages determined by the appropriate line resonances. When the transmission line was terminated with loads less than the characteristic impedance, chaos was seen in the lower steps. Similar results were obtained by numerical integration of the corresponding system of differential equations.

    Notes: Series-biased arrays of long Josephson junction fluxon oscillators can be phase locked by mutual coupling to a high-Q, linear distributed resonator. A simplified model of such a device, consisting of junctions described by the particle-map perturbation theory approach which are capacitively coupled to a lumped, linear tank circuit, reproduce the essential experimental observations at a very low computational cost. A more sophisticated model, consisting of partial differential equation descriptions of the junctions, again mutually coupled to a linear tank, substantially confirm the predictions of the simplified model. In the particle-map model, the locking range in junction bias current increases linearly with the coupling capacitance; in the partial differential equation (p.d.e.) model, this holds up to a certain maximum value of the capacitance, after which a saturation of the locking range is observed. In both models, for a given spread of junction lengths, the existence of a minimum value of the capacitance for locking to a tank with a given resonant frequency is evidenced.

    Notes: Abstract Some cytokines are known to affect IgE-mediated basophil histamine release. The effect of the cytokine granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) on human basophil and masct cell histamine release was studies further. Blood leukocytes with approximately 2% basophils from 9 healthy individuals were incubated with recombinant human GM-CSF (0.3–30 U/ml) in combination with A23187 (10−7–10−6 M) or washedStaphylococcus aureus whole bacteria (0.3–2.5 mg/ml). Histamine release was measured spectrofluorometrically. GM-CSF in itself did not induce histamine release. The addition of GM-CSF to cells stimulated with A 23187 caused a dose-dependent enhancement amounting to mean 70% at 3 U/ml and mean 170% at 30 U/ml (P〈0.05). GM-CSF enhanced the bacteria-induced histamine release by 30% at U/ml and by 65% at 3 U/ml (P〈0.05). The enhancement did not depend on cell-bound IgE or LPS contamination. In preliminary mast cell experiments with lung tissue we did not find an enancing effect of GM-CSF on IgE-mediated histamine release.

    Notes: Abstract Products and mechanisms of the reaction between the nitrate radical (NO3) and three of the most abundant reduced organic sulphur compounds in the atmosphere (CH3SCH3, CH3SH and CH3SSCH3), have been studied in a 480 L reaction chamber using in situ FT-IR and ion chromatography as analytical techniques. In the three reactions, methanesulphonic acid was found to be the most abundant sulphur containing product. In addition the stable products SO2, H2SO4, CH2O, and CH3ONO2 were identified and quantified and thionitric acid-S-methyl ester (CH3SNO2) was observed in the i.r. spectrum from all of the three reactions. Deuterated dimethylsulphide (CD3SCD3) showed an isotope effect on the reaction Deuterated dimethylsulphide (CD3SCD3) showed an isotope effect on the reaction rate constant (kH/kD) of 3.8±0.6, indicating that hydrogen abstraction is the first step in the NO3+CH3SCH3 reaction, probably after the formation of an inital adduct. Based on the products and intermediates identified, reaction mechanisms are proposed for the three reactions.

    Notes: Abstract A method is outlined for using genetic male sterility to screen for cytoplasmic-genetic sterility in barley. Since the method utilizes genetic male sterile plants as females, a very large number of crosses can be made. The critical cytoplasmic-genetic interaction will occur in the F1 generation, further minimizing time and effort required in the screening process. The method was put to test with materials from a breeding program. The desired cytoplasmic-genetic interaction was not observed. Since only ten male stocks were tested, it is suggested that further studies with stocks of more diverse origin might prove successful. {fx350-1}

    Notes: A 480 L evacuable reaction chamber, equipped with FT-IR spectroscopy on-line and ion chromatography off-line, has been used to study the gas phase reaction between the nitrate radical, NO3, and the reduced organic sulphur compounds CH3CH2SH, (CH3CH2)2S, (CH3CH2)2S2, and CH3CH2SCH3 in air. The products CH3CH2SO3H, SO2, H2SO4, CH3CHO, and CH3CH2ONO2 were identified and quantified in the reactions of the first three compounds, CH3CH2SH, (CH3CH2)2S, and (CH3CH2)2S2. The reaction products were CH3CH2SO3H, CH3SO3H, SO2, H2SO4, CH3CHO, and CH2O in the reaction of CH3CH2SCH3. On the basis of identified reaction products and intermediates observed in the infrared spectra, mechanisms are proposed for the reactions between the NO3 radical and the four reduced organic sulphur compounds. The results of this study, together with those from previous experiments performed in this laboratory on CH3SCH3, CH3SH, and CH3SSCH3 lead to the conclusion that all these species, in the reaction with the NO3 radical, follow a similar degradation mechanism producing SO2, H2SO4, R—SO3H, R—CHO, and R—CH2ONO2, as the main reaction products. The inital step of the reaction of NO3 with R—S—R and R—S—H type (R = CH3, CH2CH3) reduced organic sulphur compounds was found to be H-atom abstraction, probably after the formation of an initial adduct. For the reaction between NO3 and R—S—S—R type compounds, evidence for an addition-decomposition reaction, as the initial steps, was obtained. R—S·, R—S(O)·, and R—S(O)2· appear to be formed as intermediates in all the reactions. © John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
