Notes: Abstract: The membrane lipid composition of human frontal and temporal cortices and white matter has been studied in 118 subjects, age 20–100 years. The brain specimens were selected from subjects who lived a normal social life and died suddenly and unexpectedly with no history of neurologic or psychiatric disease. Macroscopic and microscopic examinations ruled out any signs of organic brain disorder. The sudden death eliminated all risk of changes over a long agonal stage. The data for total solids and major lipids are summarized in graphic form. Total solids, phospholipids, and cholesterol diminished linearly from 20 years of age in frontal and temporal cortices, whereas total solids phospholipids, cholesterol, cerebroside, and sulfatide showed a curvilinear diminution in frontal and temporal white matter. Gangliosides differed from the other lipids, showing an almost constant concentration between 20 and 70 years of age with a slight peak around 50 years of age. The ganglioside pattern showed continuous change with aging, with decreasing proportions of GM1 and GD1a and increasing proportions of GD1b, GM3, and GD3. Equations are given that can be used to calculate the lipid composition of normal human frontal and temporal cortices and white matter at any age between 20 and 100 years of age. These data can be used where data by direct analysis are not available for comparison with values for various pathological states.

Notes: Abstract: The membrane lipid composition of human brain has been studied in 21 men and 18 women 60–97 years of age. This brain tissue series is unique, because it has been obtained only from individuals who lived a normal social life in their own homes and died suddenly and unexpectedly from arteriosclerotic heart disease or ruptured aortic aneurysms. They had no history of neurological or psychiatric disease. Macroscopic and microscopic examinations ruled out any signs of organic brain disorder. The percentage of solids diminished continuously during the whole period, but the marked individual differences suggested large variations in the hydration of the brain. The content of membrane lipids also diminished continuously up to 90 years of age, when a marked diminution in level of gangliosides and cerebrosides occurred, a result indicating a rapid reduction in amount of neuronal membranes and myelin. The clinical implications of the variation in brain hydration and the rapid loss of membrane lipids after 90 years of age are discussed.

Notes: Prior to bone marrow transplantation (BMT) titres of IgG antibodies for cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella zoster virus (VZV) were analysed in 51 donors and recipients of allogeneic bone marrow. Donor mononuclear cells from peripheral blood and bone marrow cells were stimulated with antigen prepared from CMV, HSV and VZV. High IgG titres for HSV in the recipient were associated with grade II–III acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) (P= 0.05). Furthermore, the combination of positive IgG titre for HSV antibodies in the recipient, and strong donor blood mononuclear cell reactivity to HSV antigen in HSV immune donors, significantly increased the incidence of grade II–III acute GVHD (P= 0.04). The data suggest that HSV immune donor mononuclear cells may initiate a GVH reaction.

Notes: The records of 160 day-care surgical patients who received intrathecal anaesthesia were reviewed. No major complications were recorded. The incidence of postspinal headache after puncture with a 25-gauge spinal needle was nearly four times more frequent compared to a 26-gauge needle. The occurrence of postspinal headache in patients over the age of 45 years was significantly less frequent (p 〈 0.05) than in younger patients. Intrathecal anaesthesia was acceptable to 91% of outpatients in this group.

Notes: The 2-D propagation of horizontally polarized shear waves in a type of radially anisotropic elastic medium is considered. The shear moduli and the wave speeds are different in the radial and angular directions and the medium is thus both anisotropic and inhomogeneous, with a material singularity at the origin. Two simple wave-propagation problems are considered: radiation by a point source in an unbounded radially anisotropic medium, and the scattering of a plane wave by a radially anisotropic disc in an isotropic surrounding. The results are displayed by contour plots of the displacement field in the vicinity of the point source or the disc. Results for both time-harmonic disturbances and pulses are given. The most striking feature of the results is the focusing in the radial direction of the radiation from the point source that appears when the radial wave speed is greater than the angular one.

Notes: Summary A non-linear fracture mechanics model, the Fictitious Crack Model (FCM), is utilised for a theoretical study of the Compact Tension (CT) specimen. The complete stress-displacement curve for the material is used in the FCM, even the descending branch after maximum stress. The analysis shows that the computed load-displacement curve is sensitive to modulus of elasticity perpendicular to the grain, tensile strength and fracture energy. The theoretically obtained results agree well with experimentally determined curves.

Notes: Summary A method for measuring the complete stress-displacement relation in both tension and shear and some experimental results on Nordic redwood (Pinus sylvestris) are presented. The complete stress-displacement relation also includes the post-peak behaviour, i.e. the descending branch of the curve. The influence of annual ring orientation and moisture content on the form of the stress-displacement curve for the fracture process zone has been examined, and the results show that the normalised curve in tension is independent of annual ring orientation and moisture content.

Notes: Summary A set of new suitable microsurgical suction tubes has been designed especially suitable for fragile and delicate tissues such as the nervous and vascular tissues in the brain and spinal cord. The set provides two different shafts and five different tubes for superficial of deep micro- as well as macro-operations. These new suction tubes have two major advantages compared to traditional suction tubes. Firstly: the perforated smooth suctiontip allows continuous suction without damage to the tissue and secondly: the tubes are quickly and easily exchanged from the suction shaft when necessary.

Notes: Summary A new craniotomy tool is described. The original De Martell drill was redesigned into a hole-saw for simultaneous production of burr-holes and appropriate autologous bone plugs. The plugs can easily be reinserted and locked in place using bone dust and Tiseel glue permitting appropriate healing and satisfactory cosmetic appaerance.
