    Notes: Abstract This descriptive study was undertaken as a pilot test for several questionnaires designed to examine the well-being of caregivers of persons with stroke. This predominantly female sample was found to have moderately few physical symptoms, but to be in considerable emotional distress. Nearly half the sample had anxiety and depression scores above the level identified as suspicious for clinically relevant distress as indexed by the Symptom Questionnaire.1 Anger was also a salient finding: 40% of those questioned scored above the cutoff level for hostility and several caregivers expressed anger verbally during data collection. The degree of psychological distress in these individuals is of importance to all health care professionals and deserves increased attention, both from the perspective of the researcher and from the perspective of the clinician.

    Notes: Abstract Theγ-radiation emitted after thermal neutron capture in isotopically enriched58Ni and60Ni was measured at the ILL high flux reactor by means of Ge/NaI detectors operated in Compton suppression and pair spectrometer mode. The neutron binding energies were determined asB n (59Ni)=8999.15(23) keV and Bn(61Ni)=7820.07(20) keV; some 95% of the totalγ-ray fluxes through59,61Ni were assigned. Theγ-ray strength functions of the primary transitions and the level densities are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The γ-radiation following single and double neutron capture in isotopically enriched62Ni was studied at the high flux reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin, using a pair and Compton suppressed germanium detector. Measurements before and after 170 d of breeding were performed. The γ-ray fluxes through63Ni and64Ni are discussed; several new levels and spin-parity assignments were found. On the basis of the known discrete levels and the low-energy neutron resonances, level density parameters were determined within the Constant Temperature Fermi Gas model. The neutron binding energies were measured asB n (63Ni)=6837.92(18) keV andB n (64Ni)=9657.64(24) keV. The63Ni (n, γ) cross section for reactor neutrons was measured to be σ=20 −2 +5 b.

    Notes: Fourier transform (FT) Raman and infrared spectra of the outermost layer of human skin, the stratum corneum, were recorded. Assignments consistent with the FT Raman vibrations were made for the first time and compared with assignments from the FTIR spectrum. The results demonstrate that FT Raman spectroscopy holds several advantages over FTIR in studies of human skin. The molecular and conformational nature of human skin, and modifications induced by drug or chemical treatments, may be assessed by FT Raman spectroscopy.

    Notes: Fourier transform Raman spectra were obtained from viable colonies of bacteria. Despite the highly coloured nature of the samples, the spectra were of sufficient quality to allow comprehensive assignments consistent with the vibrational modes. The spectra showed no clear evidence for the presence of phospholipids, indicating that penetration of the exciting infrared radiation was limited to the outermost components of the bacterial cell walls. The data describing the molecular and conformational state of the bacterial cell wall may aid in probing the modes of action of a wide range of antimicrobial agent.

The spectra from skin stratum corneum, callus, nail and hair were fluorescence free and the samples did not degrade during analysis. Assignments consistent with the vibrational wavenumbers were made to characterize the molecular and conformational nature of the samples. The principal structural dissimilarities were in the sulphur content of tissues containing hard keratin (hair and nail) and soft keratin (stratum corneum and callus).
