    Pinning and long-time-scale behavior in traveling-wave convection (1991)

    Notes: Abstract We study nonlinear traveling-wave (TW) and stationary states of convection in experiments in ethanol-water mixtures. While the TW phase velocity as a function of Rayleigh number has been recently shown to be in agreement with the predictions of theory and numerical calculations, we find that this velocity is temporally modulated at frequencies corresponding to the travel time of a single convection roll and of a roll pair past a point stationary in the convection cell. This modulation could be due to the pinning of the convection pattern by experimental inhomogeneities. For large Rayleigh numbers where stationary overturning convection is expected, we sometimes observe extremely slow unidirectional TW states. For larger Rayleigh numbers, this slow TW state starts and stops intermittently on a characteristic time scale of several days. The possible origin of these phenomena and their potential utility are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Differences in antigenicity between human and canine C-reactive proteins were investigated by Western blotting analysis. It was confirmed that several commercial anti-human CRP sera reacted with canine CRP. However, 34 anti-canine CRP sera prepared by immunization of rabbits and goats with canine CRP all reacted with canine CRP but not with human CRP in either immunoelectrophoresis or Western blotting. Immunization with human CRP produced a cross-reacting antibody that reacted with canine CRP. Conversely, immunization with canine CRP did not produce a cross-reacting antibody that reacted with human CRP. These findings may be interpreted as showing that, while canine and human CRPs do not share common antigenicity, they do contain structurally similar antigenic determinants.

    Notes: Summary Guppy muscle shows unique electron dense bands in the terminal segment of the myofibril at the muscle—tendon junction. On occasion electron dense bands were also observed at the myomyous junction. The unusual bands are approximately 70 nm wide with an electron density similar to that of Z-lines. Thin filaments seem to be continuous throughout these dense bands with no interdigitation of filaments before the membrane. Calcium-activated neutral protease removes the dense bands. The filaments of the terminal segment are decorated by heavy meromyosin and therefore are actin. The polarity of actin filaments, determined by the arrowhead pattern formed when the filaments are decorated with HMM, appears to be directed away from the sarcolemma. No evidence of polarity reversal was observed at the dense bands. Although function and significance is unknown, we assume the electron dense bands of the myofibril terminal segment of guppy muscle are not Z-lines, but rather, are structures unique to guppy muscle.

    Notes: Abstract Addition of anti-immunoglobulin M (anti-IgM), G (anti-IgG) and A (anti-IgA) sera to the haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) test (anti-Ig HI test) forMycoplasma gallisepticum resulted in 2- to 8-fold increases in the HI titres. On investigating the anti-Ig HI reaction using IgM and IgG antibodies separated by affinity chromatography, it was confirmed that, in the enhanced HI titres, specificity existed between the chicken Ig classes having antibody activity and the antisera used in the test. Four days after inoculation ofM. gallisepticum, the anti-Ig HI reaction was markedly enhanced by anti-IgM antiserum in the intravenously inoculated chickens and by anti-IgA serum in the nasally inoculated chickens. Ten days after inoculation ofM. gallisepticum marked enhancement of the reaction was produced by anti-IgG serum in both intravenously and nasally inoculated chickens, but the enhancement of the anti-Ig HI reaction diminished from the second week after inoculation.
