Notizen: Summary Thirty-nine cases of primary intracranial arachnoid cyst in the elderly, including one case of our own, were analyzed. Clinical characteristics in these patients were as follows. (1) The number of patients decreased with age, but there were no differences according to sex. (2) Clinical manifestations were similar to those of chronic subdural haematoma or normal pressure hydrocephalus including dementia, urinary incontinence, and hemiparesis. General symptoms such as headache and seizures were also present. (3) Surgery was performed in most patients with generally good outcome regardless of operative procedures (capsular resection vs. shunt). (4) In some cases of advanced age, disease manifestation may have been due to slight head injuries. Our own case is described as an example.

Notizen: Summary The localization and the transmitter phenotype of subparafascicular thalamic nucleus (Spf) neurons projecting to the inferior colliculus (IC) and to the spinal cord (Sp) were studied by using a retrograde fluorescent double labeling technique, and a combined technique of retrograde tracing and immunohistochemistry for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and glutamate decarboxylase (GAD). The cell population of Spf-IC neurons was totally differentiated from that of Spf-Sp neurons which have been reported to be dopaminergic. The former were densely distributed, small to medium sized cells and localized in the central portion of the Spf, while the latter were sparsely distributed, large cells and localized in the marginal portion of the Spf. Spf-IC neurons were completely devoid of TH immunoreactivity and, instead, approximately half of them showed GAD immunoreactivity. From these findings, it is concluded that the Spf is distinctly compartmentalized by the presence at least two separate neuronal subpopulations, which are distinguishable in terms of their cell size, distribution patterns, transmitter phenotypes and trajectories.

Notizen: Summary After injection of fluorescent tracer into the inferior colliculus (IC), retrogradely labeled cells were observed not only in the temporoauditory cortex (ACx) and the substantia nigra pars lateralis, but also in the globus pallidus (GP). These labeled GP cells were localized exclusively in the caudal portion of the GP, which has been known to project to the ACx. Employing a retrograde fluorescent double labeling technique, the GP-IC neurons were found to be distributed in a separate manner from the GP-ACx neurons within the caudal GP. The present study provides further anatomical evidence that the caudal GP has a functional role in auditory processing.

Notizen: Summary Signet-ring-cell carcinomas were induced in the stomach of 12 beagle dogs by p.o. administration ofN-ethyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (ENNG), and the morphology and modes of cell proliferation in an incipient stage of cancer growth were studied with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdUrd) incorporation. From 5 to 27 months after the completion of 8 months' carcinogen treatment, minute carcinomas were found in the stomachs of 9 dogs. Before sacrifice, the dogs were given a single or repeated i.v. injections of BrdUrd for 1–3 days. Minute signet-ring-cell carcinomas were found to form a layered structure, in which the cancer cells proliferated in the lamina propria at the gland-neck level and differentiated to postmitotic signet-ring cells at the upper and lower levels of the mucosa. From repeated injections of BrdUrd, the time required for all the proliferative cells to be labelled with BrdUrd (reflecting the maximum cellcycle time) was estimated to be 1.7 days for the normal glands, and 2.7 days for minute signet-ring-cell carcinomas. From the labelling index with BrdUrd as well as from the morphology, earliest carcinomas were identified in the single gland. There remained atrophic normal epithelium commonly in the single-gland lesions. Proliferative atypical cells appeared to be shed into the stroma passively through the atrophy and subsequent collapse of the gland rather than through active invasion. This may be a reason why cancer cells in minute signet-ring cell carcinomas preserved the normal pattern of cell renewal movement to form the layered structure.
