Notes: ras mutations have been reported as an early event in some human malignancies and in the mouse skin model of multistep carcinogenesis; early studies in human non-melanoma skin cancers have reported variable rates of ras mutations. A recent study, however, has reported a high frequency of activating mutations of the Harvey-ras proto-oncogene in non-melanoma skin cancers, and the site specificity of the mutation at the second position of codon 12 prompted us to re-examine the importance of Ha-ras codon 12 mutations as an early event in the development of these tumours, using a combination of PCR and restriction fragment polymorphism of codon 12 of the Ha-ras gene. Dilution experiments confirmed that the method was sensitive and capable of detecting mutations at this codon when only 4% of the total alleles are mutated. We were surprised to find no mutations in the 40 basal cell carcinomas. 12 squamous cell carcinomas and 12 cases of Bowen's disease studied. We conclude that Ha-ras codon 12 mutations are rare events in human non-melanoma skin cancer in the U.K. The marked differences in the frequency of codon 12 Ha-ras mutations in published studies may relate to either technical artefacts, or differences in the molecular epidemiology between areas of low and high sun exposure.

Notes: Summary In this paper, the polymerisation of a conjugated liquid crystalline diacetylene is reported. The structure of the polymer is discussed in relation to results from spectroscopic studies and molecular weight determinations. The polymer has a backbone structure analogous to that of other polydiacetylenes.

Notes: Abstract A fungus from bronchial lavage fluid from a patient with pulmonary infiltration was isolated in pure culture and identified as a species of Pseudomicrodochium. It is compared and contrasted with other species of the genus, in particular P. suttonii, and formally described as P. fusarioides.

Notes: Summary Previous reports have shown an association between the side of C2 spinous process deviation or asymmetrical prominence, or vertebral rotation, and the side of the headache in unilateral migraine. However, this study has found that such C2 appearances were present as frequently in the controls as in the migraine patients, and that there was no association between the side of the anomaly and the lateralisation of the headache. The results were comparable for the different sub-groups of migraine.

Notes: Abstract We describe the thermal and optical studies of some diacetylene molecules which were specially designed in an attempt to reduce the temperature at which the mesophase appears. Original studies were on symmetrical molecules and these were extended to include typical liquid crystal molecules with diacetylenes providing a polymeric backbone and unsymmetrically substituted diacetylenes including Schiffs bases with long alkyl chains.

Notes: Abstract Behavioral studies using an olfactometer demonstrated that sexual females (oviparae) of the damson-hop aphid,Phorodon humuli, release a pheromone to which males respond. Volatiles produced by the oviparae were analyzed by coupled gas chromatography-single cell recording from the secondary rhinaria on the male antenna and showed the presence of one peak with major activity. Coupled gas chrornatography-mass spectrometry suggested a nepetalactol, which was shown to have the 4aR, 7S, 7aS stereochemistry by synthesis from the corresponding nepetalactone isolated from the labiate plantNepeta mussinii. Although the stereochemistry at carbon-1 is not yet established, a synthetic sample comprising ca. 70% 1S and 30% 1R attracted highly significant numbers of males to water traps placed within and adjacent to a hop garden. Initial studies also indicated attraction of males in both the olfactometer and in the field by volatiles from the primary host.

Notes: Summary This paper describes measurements of the impulses that particles experience while undergoing rapid shear. These were performed with an eye towards understanding the processes that lead to particle attrition and fracture. The measurements were taken from a discrete particle computer simulation of a simple shear flow of spheres. Special attention is paid to the strongest impulses as these will do the most damage. The results indicate that the largest impulses arise, not from the mean shear flow, but from the random particle velocities that are characterized by the so-called “granular temperature”. Measurements of the largest impulses are presented as functions of particle properties and solid concentration. Histograms of the impulse strengths illustrate the effect of concentration and particle surface friction. Finally, geometric distributions are presented that illustrate the shear induced anisotropy in the impulse strengths.

Notes: Abstract We briefly review some general aspects of Bose condensation and off-diagonal long range order in infinite bulk systems and then discuss to what extent these features might be manifested in finite systems with free surfaces such as droplets of liquid 4 He at low temperatures. We focus on the structure of the one-body density matrix and the macroscopic wave function in the surface region, and note the possibility of a surface condensate.
