Notes: Abstract A new infrared camera (AIR Camera) has been developed at NASA-Ames Research Center for observations from ground-based telescopes. The heart of the camera is a Hughes 58 × 62 pixel Arsenic-doped Silicon detector array that has the spectral sensitivity range to allow observations in both the 10 and 20 micron atmospheric windows.

Notes: Summary We have evaluated Sramek's method of impedance cardiography as a non-invasive way of detecting the cardiovascular effects of drugs. We made cardiovascular measurements using the method during passive tilting and exercise 2 h after the oral administration of atenolol (50 and 100 mg), propranolol (40 and 80 mg), pindolol (5 and 10 mg), and placebo in seven separate studies involving eight healthy male volunteers. Equivalent doses of the pure antagonists atenolol (β1) and propranolol (β1, β2) produced similar reductions in heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and cardiac index, and increases in stroke volume and total peripheral resistance, particularly during exercise. In contrast the partial agonist pindolol produced increases in heart rate and cardiac index, and reductions in peripheral resistance at rest. During passive tilting and exercise pindolol reduced heart rate, but cardiac output and total peripheral resistance were unchanged except at the highest levels of exercise. The similar cardiovascular effects of atenolol and propranolol, but differing effects of pindolol, are consistent with reports using other methods of measurement. This suggests that impedance cardiography may have a place in the non-invasive assessment of the cardiovascular effects of drugs.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary This study of 52 patients (27 men) with recent (18 months) or chronic (〉18 months) low back and unilateral radicular pain symptoms was undertaken to investigate whether wasting of the paraspinal muscle components is generalised or selective. During the patients' routine computed tomographic lumbar spinal scans a standardised transaxial view was obtained along the upper end-plate of the L4 vertebra, and the cross-sectional areas of the paraspinal muscles and their components, multifidus and erector spinae, estimated. Irrespective of whether the symptoms were recent or chronic, multifidus dimensions were significantly greater on the side ipsilateral to the radicular pain symptoms. The results indicate selective changes of multifidus in these patients and possibly reflect an adaptive response by this muscle, such as to an increased role in stabilising the lumbar spine in the face of overall paraspinal muscle atrophy.

Notes: Abstract We estimate X-ray emission by shock-heated regions in hot star winds, using temperature and density profiles calculated by time-dependent dynamical models; the shocks result from the instability of the line scattering force that drives the wind. For main sequence late O and early B stars, the model X-ray flux is generally well below the observed flux, though the shape of the model spectrum is approximately consistent with observations. For the early O supergiantζ Pup, the model spectral shape again agrees with observation; the total flux predicted by models is well above the observed flux, though significant uncertainties remain.

Notes: Summary Absolute measurements of gravity have been made at 6 locations ranging from Ottawa, Ont., in southern Canada, to Alert, N.W.T., the world's most northerly permanent settlement, as part of a program to provide scale and level for the Canadian Gravity Standardization Network (CGSN). Except at Resolute, N.W.T., CGSN-74 gravity values, upon which our gravity reductions are currently based, agree with the absolute gravity meter results to within about .25µm/s2. The scale of our CGSN-80 gravity network, upon which our spring-balance type gravity meter scale constants are derived, agrees with the scale defined by the absolute gravity measurements to within about one part in ten thousand.

Notes: Summary Homoprotocatechuate (HPC; 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetate) is catabolized to Krebs cycle intermediates via extradiol (meta-) cleavage and the necessary enzymes are chromosomally encoded in a variety of bacteria. Based on an analysis of the cloned pathway genes, the Escherichia coli C hpc gene cluster was thought to be arranged in two gene blocks transcribed from a central, divergent, operator/promoter region, which was negatively regulated by the Hpc repressor. By a variety of techniques including expression of cloned hpc genes in pUC18/19 vectors, unidirectional deletion subcloning, hybridization studies and nucleotide sequencing it has now been shown that the hpc pathway structural genes are transcribed in one direction. These experiments have also indicated that a decarboxylase and an isomerase of the pathway are encoded by a single gene (hpcE) and have established the exact structural gene order as hpcRphpcECBDGH. The position of the putative regulatory gene, hpcR, is upstream of the first structural gene (hpcE) for the Hpc pathway enzymes. The deduced open reading frame for the Hpc repressor specifies a protein of 148 amino acids with a subunit molecular weight of 17 kDa. The region between hpcR and the first gene for the pathway enzymes has a sequence similar to that for catabolite activator protein (CAP) binding. This region is immediately upstream of a promoter for the pathway structural genes, which has been identified by transcript mapping.

Notes: Abstract Excimer laser sclerostomy is a new glaucoma filtration procedure in which the argon fluoride excimer laser at 193 nm is delivered ab externo through a modified open mask system incorporating an en-face air jet to dry the target area and preserve hemostasis during ablation and a conjunctival plication mechanism, which allows the conjunctival and scleral wounds created by through-and-through ablation to separate once the mask is removed. No preparatory dissection of the conjunctiva is required. Five 200-μm and five 500-gmm sclerostomies were formed by ablation at a pulse repetition rate of 20 Hz and a fluence per pulse of 400 mJ/cm2 in fellow eyes of five rhesus monkeys with experimental glaucoma. Overall, seven of the ten eyes attained a functional result, with intraocular pressures remaining below 21 mmHg for 6 ± 1 days and rising to the pre-operative level after 10 ± 3 days without adjunctive antifibroblast medication. The duration of filtration for 200-μm and 500-μm sclerostomies was similar, and parallels that previously observed for posterior lip sclerostomy in the same animal model. The three eyes with no functional result all had incorrectly positioned sclerostomies. Choroidal detachment and significant shallowing of the anterior chamber did not occur. Excimer laser sclerostomy appears to be a viable technique for filtration, provided that mask placement is accurate.
