Notes: Optical diffraction patterns have been obtained from a set of unusual gem opals from Idaho, U.S.A. The formation of star patterns in them is described, and the structure producing the stars is deduced from optical diffraction. The arrangement of particles is different from that found previously for Australian opals.

Notes: The electron-microscope technique of lattice imaging can in favourable circumstances be used to observe the structure of materials directly. The technique is described, and examples of cases in which a direct correlation between image contrast and structural features has been established are given. Procedures for computing contrast in n-beam lattice images are outlined, and the important experimental parameters, thickness and orientation of the specimen, and spherical aberration and defocusing of the microscope objective, are discussed in some detail.

Notes: Lattice images were computed with increasing incident-beam divergence with spherical aberration taken into account. The effect is as if the outer diffracted beams transmitted by the objective aperture do not contribute to the image, so that the resolution is effectively less than that expected from the aperture size. Images of Nb12O29, calculated with the inclusion of this effect, show improved agreement with experimental images.

Notes: Gem opals were examined in an optical diffractometer and found to give several types of diffraction pattern which are interpreted by analogy with conventional three-dimensional X-ray theory to give the structure of the opal. The results show that the spherical silica particles in opals are arranged hexagonally in layers which are usually stacked randomly. In some specimens there are parallel domains of ordered packing, commonly in a f.c.c. sequence and sometimes in a h.c.p. sequence. Although the silica particles cannot be resolved by optical microscopy, bands parallel to the layers and fringes across the bands can be seen in images with the diffracted light.

Notes: A series of through-focus lattice images has been obtained with an electron microscope for single crystals of W4Nb26O77 set at an orientation to give mainly a systematic set of 00l reflexions. Dynamical n-beam computations (n = 435) have been made for a crystal in this orientation to determine the values of the amplitudes and phases of the diffracted beams. Subsequently, the fringe profiles for lattice images have been computed for various thicknesses of crystal and defects of focus. When the experimental factors, including instrument aberrations, are taken into account, good agreement between computed and observed fringes is obtained. An earlier assumption of direct correlation of features in underfocused images with structure in the crystal, is found to be valid, at least for this compound.
