Notes: Low-temperature band-to-band photoluminescence of GaAs and AlGaAs excited by the 514.5 nm line of an argon ion laser beam was used as a probe to measure the temperature at the focused laser spot. A combined study of the dependence of band-gap energy on increasing laser power density and temperature was undertaken. The band-gap variation with temperature has been correlated with laser induced temperature at the focused laser spot as a function of laser power density. The induced temperature is lower than anticipated from the theories for cw laser heating. This disagreement can be explained by the contribution of photoexcited carriers to the thermal conductivity, which is not considered by theories available for laser heating in semiconductors. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Micro-Raman investigations have been carried out at various spots in and around oval defects in epitaxially grown 〈100〉 GaAs wafers. Changes in the crystalline orientation have been observed within the oval defect structure as compared to the normal region. However, the crystalline quality of these defects remain equally good. These oval defects also possess a deviation in stoichiometry, corroborating to the conclusions of other studies.

Notes: Abstract A comprehensive vibrational study of Rubidium thiocyanate (RbNCS), in the 298–448°K range reveals that the orthorhombic to tetragonal transition atT c≃440°K is of order-disorder type exhibiting purely second order characteristics. A consistent order-parameter exponent β≃0.45±0.04 has been obtained from both Raman and IR measurements. In the Raman spectra, the appearance of sidebands in both the C−N&C−S stretching modes and their temperature dependence indicate the existence and a gradual diminution of internal electric field asT approachesT c. These results have been discussed in the context of an anharmonic oscillator model. An activation energy (U) for the reorientational motion of NCS− ions,U≃0.29±0.02 eV, has been calculated from large changes in the bandwidth (γC-N) nearT c.

Notes: Thin sputtered films of the high-Tc material YBa2Cu3O7-Δ were investigated using 180° back-scattering geometry with Fourier transform (FT) Raman spectroscopy. It is established that the main bands in the spectra of a YBa2Cu3O7-Δ film on strontium titanate substrate exhibit similarity with those obtained for oriented untwinned crystallites of the superconductor having their c-axis perpendicular to the surface of the substrate. No degradation or excessive heating of the film was observed with 1.064 μm excitation for low laser powers. The film on a magnesium oxide substrate gives unique evidence of the isolated strong, featureless, almost flat continuum, producing a broad maximum near the region of the antiphase axial bending O(2)—Cu(2)—O(3) motions of planar oxygens at very low excitation energy. This appears to be the first application of FT-Raman spectroscopy using near-infrared excitation (1.064 μm) to the field of high-temperature superconducting films and their detailed characterization.

Notes: Micro-Raman spectra were obtained with three different films and also with amorphous carbon and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite samples for comparison. The spectra of the crystallites are similar, differing mainly in frequency and line width of the major line with the position varying from 1566 to 1578 cm-1. The corresponding line for the pyrolytic graphite is at 1581 cm-1. Another difference is related to the strength of two broad background features at ca. 1350 and 1595 cm-1, evidently due to a certain amount of amorphous carbon within the spot area. In general, the spectra of the crystallites are similar to that of C70 films reported earlier.

Notes: Fourier transform (FT) Raman spectra (3500-50 cm-1) were recorded for hard diamond-like carbon (DLC) films deposited on silicon wafer substrates at various temperatures. The observed frequency of the graphitic optic zone center phonon (G) at 1595 cm-1 was found to remain constant with variations in the deposition temperature of the substrate, the excitation wavelength and the laser power. However, the disorder activated optical zone edge phonon (D), observed in the 1380-1250 cm-1 region, exhibits changes in the band maximum frequency with the above-mentioned variables. FT Raman spectroscopy, applied to these films, is shown to be a useful probe for the identification of various different types of diamond-like structures which are present.

Notes: Thin films of ferroelectric PbZrxTi1 - xO3 were prepared by the sol-gel technique on sapphire and fused-quartz substrates with thicknesses ranging from 0.6 to 1.2 μm. Powders of the above substance were also prepared by hydrolysis and condensation of the same precursor sol and crystallized by holding them at 600°C for either 6 or 12 h. From a comparison of the Raman spectra it is obvious that both powders and the film on sapphire substrate belong to the perovskite structure, whereas the film on fused quartz has a phyrochlore structure. These observations agree well with x-ray measurements of diffraction patterns. Absence of 70 cm-1 E(TO) band in the film suggests that the film is rhombohedral with x being well above 0.535.

Notes: Micro-Raman studies were performed on ion-irradiated oxidized silicon surfaces with different ion energies, ion fluences and subsequent hydrogenation to determine the efficacy and sensitivity for obtaining information on the degree of ion beam-induced damage in very thin (ca. 100 Å) layers of silicon subsurface and the top oxide. The variations in the Raman spectra were interpreted in terms of the degree of amorphization produced in the silicon sub-surface by the ion beam and depolymerization of the top SiO2 layer.

Notes: Polarized Raman spectra of methylammoniummercury trichloride crystals were measured at room temperature. Factor group analysis involving the correlation method was applied. The observed spectra were interpreted in terms of internal and external oscillations of the constituent molecular ions, CH3NH3+ and HgCl3-.
