Notes: Abstract A fuzzy expert system was developed for online diagnosing and controlling of bioprocesses. The system was constructed in object-oriented Smalltalk/V for diagnosing and controlling of bioprocesses. Lactic acid fermentation with an industrial strain ofLactobacillus casei was chosen as the model system. The performance of the fuzzy expert system and the knowledge base utilizing experts' knowledge and several facts obtained from the experiments were successfully validated with on-line fermentations. The fuzzy expert system could diagnose a fault on-line and give reasonable advice to the process operator. In order to achieve the diagnosing faculty, a database, a knowledge base, and both backward and forward chaining procedures were implemented employing the object-oriented programming environment. A defuzzifier was implemented in the system to achieve on-line control. In order to realize a decision-making system with a human operator and a fuzzy expert system, a new control strategy namedAdvice was also introduced. Several cultivations were carried out in order to collect knowledge on the effects concerned with inoculum properties to the process and to construct a database including standard time-course profiles. The performance of the fuzzy expert control system was successfully tested with on-line experiments.

Notes: Abstract The on-line calculated specific rates of growth, substrate consumption and product formation were used to diagnose microbial activities during a lactic acid fermentation. The specific rates were calculated from on-line measured cell mass, and substrate and product concentrations. The specific rates were more sensitive indicators of slight changes in fermentation conditions than such monitored data as cell mass or product concentrations.

Notes: Abstract The reaction γ+d → π++π− +p + n has been measured in a kinematically complete way at incident photon energies from 570 to 850 MeV in steps of 40 MeV. From detailed comparison of measured data with results of event simulations, it is concluded that three different mechanisms, the quasi-free, double-delta and phase space productions, contribute to the reaction. Each of the cross sections corresponding to these mechanisms is determined separately.

Notes: Abstract In order to improve the cultivation properties of a traditional continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR), we introduced a circulation unit made of four inorganic membranes in stainless steel tubes in parallel configuration, the so-called Tubular Bioreactor (TBR). Furthermore, the TBR outlet tube, which has a restriction nozzle at the end, was installed on top of the fermentor vessel, thereby creating a strong jet flow into the reactor and thus improving the mixing and the oxygen transfer rate. The k La could be increased by approximately 50%. This setup was used for cultivations of recombinant Escherichia coli in a minimal medium and high cell density. More than 50 g dry cell mass/dm3 was obtained. Simultaneously, we have produced an elongated form of human insulin-like growth factor II, which was a secreted fusion protein utilizing the E. coli secretion system based on staphylococcus protein A. The product could be recovered continuously through the TBR-membrane.

Notes: Abstract The studies for production of saikosaponins by tissue culture of Bupleurum falcatum L. were carried out to produce saikosaponins with several kinds of media and plant hormones. Among the media and plant hormones studied, Gamborg's B-5 [23] medium containing 0.5 ppm kinetin (k) and 1.0 ppm 3-indolebutyric acid (IBA) was the most effective medium and hormone for production of saikosaponins. The highest content of saikosaponin-d in the dried cells was 0.26%, which was similar to a concentration of Bupleuri Radix.

Notes: Abstract A knowledge based system, LAexpert, was developed to diagnose microbial activities during a fermentation process on the basis of specific rates determined on-line. The LAexpert is a supervisor for a process control system and assists operators in fault diagnosis. The LAexpert was implemented using a fuzzy expert system shell based on the object oriented programming tool Smalltalk V/Mac running in a Macintosh II computer. The shell can handle uncertainties both in the measurements and knowledge by fuzzy reasoning.

Notes: Abstract The tensile strength of epoxy resin reinforced with a random-planar orientation of short carbon fibres decreases with increasing temperature. This decrease may be estimated by the strain rate and temperature dependence of both the yield shear strength at the fibre-matrix interphase and the critical fibre length obtained by taking the distribution of fibre strength into consideration. The experimental value at room temperature is smaller than the calculated value. It is inferred that this result is attributed to the stress concentration caused by ineffective fibres produced during preparation which were shorter than the critical fibre length.

Notes: Abstract The angular distributions of the reactione + e −→μ+μ− ande + e +→τ+τ− have been measured between $$\sqrt s = 50$$ and 60.8 GeV with the VENUS detector at TRISTAN. The average total cross section and the forward-backward charge asymmetry for μ-pair production are observed to be 28.3±1.4±0.8 pb and (−29.0 −4.8 +5.0 ±0.5)%, and those for τ-pair production are 27.6±1.7±1.0 pb and (−32.8 −6.2 +6.4 ±1.5)% at $$\langle \sqrt s \rangle $$ . These values are consistent with the predictions of the standard model of electroweak interactions.
