Notes: Epitaxial growth of Si on PtSi(010)/Si(111) structure, which was fabricated by coevaporation of Pt and Si with the stoichiometric ratio (Pt/Si=1/1), was carried out in a molecular beam epitaxy system. At the substrate temperature of 400 °C, Si grew epitaxially on the PtSi layer and Si(111)/PtSi(010)/Si(111) double heterostructure was obtained. On the other hand, at the substrate temperature of 600 °C, the PtSi layer transformed into epitaxial columns and/or walls in the process of Si deposition and evaporated Si filled the space among the PtSi columns and/or walls epitaxially.

Notes: Abstract Cuprozinc superoxide dismutase (Cu,Zn-SOD) was isolated from bovine erythrocytes by pH-controlled ammonium sulfate-methanol extraction (ASME extraction). Adjustment of the pH of a suspension of the lysed red cells in the presence of ammonium sulfate (90% saturation) to pH 5.0, followed by partition with an equal amount of methanol, resulted in isolation of the enzyme with specific, activity of greater than 2000 units/mg of protein. Further purification using DEAE-cellulose column chromatography gave a highly purified Cu,Zn-SOD showing a single band on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Using this procedure about 14 mg of pure Cu,Zn-SOD with a specific activity of 4728 units/mg of protein can be recovered from one liter of bovine blood. The enzyme was characterized and the results obtained were in agreement with earlier reports. This procedure appears, therefore, to be a convenient method for isolating the enzyme.

Notes: Summary Effects of dorsal root entry zone lesions (DREZLs) on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma concentrations of neuropeptides, catecholamines, and cyclic nucleotides were studied in 9 patients with intractable chronic pain. Contents of β-endorphin-like-material in CSF decreased in all patients 12–17 days following DREZLs during which complete to good pain relief was achieved. Contents of β-endorphin-like-material in CSF increased again about one month after DREZLs in two and remained unchanged in one of three patients tested, who complained of partial reappearance of pain. Contents of β-endorphin-like-materials in plasma showed no significant changes after DREZLs. Substance P, noradrenaline, adrenaline, and cyclic nucleotide levels in both CSF and plasma were variable among the subjects and did not change significantly following the operations. Thus, the results suggest that production of β-endorphin-like-material in the central nervous system is decreased by DREZL, though the increase in its turn-over might not be neglected. The mechanisms of the decrease in contents of β-endorphin-like-material in CSF after DREZLs were discussed in terms of our current knowledge of pain and pain inhibitory systems.

Notes: Summary Several clinical problems related to the dorsal root entry zone lesions (DREZLs) in 15 patients with chronic pain are presented and discussed in terms of ratings of pain relief following surgery, development of sensory or motor weakness and postmortem histologies. Subjective pain relief exceeding 70% was achieved at around 2 weeks after the operations in most patients (13/15), and then decreased in some to 30 from 70% in the follow-up observations. Our new “objective” pain relief score was tested in these patients. A significant positive correlation between subjective pain relief and our objective pain relief scale was found, but some discrepancies between them were also found during the follow-up. Sensory loss, motor weakness, paraesthesia and a new pain were found as complications in 12, 7, 4 and 6 patients, respectively. Postmortem histological findings of the spinal cord in two patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and uterine cancer, who received bilateral DREZLs twice and bilateral DREZLs plus commissural myelotomy, respectively, indicate that care should be taken to avoid extension of the coagulation beyond the dorsal horn.

Notes: Summary Following a cross-over design propranolol 20 mg p.o. was given to 7 healthy subjects at 09.00 h and 21.00 h at an interval of 1 week. Heart rate (HR) during submaximal ergometer exercise was measured at four intervals during 10 h after treatment. Plasma propranolol concentrations were also determined. The suppressive effect (%R) of propranolol on the rise in HR during exercise after the morning dosage was significantly greater at 1.5 h and tended to be greater 3 h after administration than at comparable times in the evening trial. Mean plasma propranolol concentrations during the early phase were higher after the morning than the evening dose. The maximum plasma concentration (Cmax), area under the plasma concentration-time curve from 0 to 10 h (AUC (0–10)) and absorption rate constant (ka) were significantly greater after the morning dose. The time to maximum concentration (tmax) and elimination half-life (t1/2) of the morning and evening dosages did not differ. A significant correlation was observed between plasma propranolol concentration and %R in HR during exercise in the morning (r=0.74) and evening (r=0.63) trials, and the regression lines of the morning and evening treatments did not differ. The data indicate that the suppressive effect of propranolol on exercise-induced tachycardia was relatively greater after a morning than an evening dose; that propranolol was more rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after the morning than the evening dosage; that diurnal changes in the activity of propranolol depend in part on the time of administration and its subsequent effect on plasma concentrations of the drug; and that the antagonist activity of propranolol relative to a given drug concentration may not differ between morning and evening treatments.
