    Notes: Ion implantation into Nd:YAG has been used to produce waveguides which are capable of supporting laser action. The refractive index profiles have been characterized as a function of ion dose and energy, implant temperature, and subsequent thermal annealing. Transmission losses down to 1.2 dB/cm have been obtained in the optimized waveguides. There is a temperature independent index enhancement of ∼0.15% in the electronic stopping (guiding) region. The nuclear collision damage is temperature dependent, and shows an initial index increase (∼0.3% for dose 1 × 1016 ions/cm2), but a subsequent decrease of up to several percent, which forms an optical barrier, as has been observed in many other crystalline materials. The best mode confinement and attenuation is obtained by utilizing the low dose nuclear index enhancement produced by several equally spaced implants (multiple energy) to give a broad well with Δn∼0.25%. Several unusual features of the profiles are reported and discussed.

A structure providing for a yield point of no less than σy = 350 N/mm2 in combionation with sufficiently high cold resistance is formed when a rolled product of low-carbon steel St3 is hardened in mill flux. 2. The use of rapid surface cooling (600–800°/sec) is most effective for the acquisition of appreciably higher strength (σy = 400–600 N/mm2); as a result, temper martensite with a different hardness throughout the section (the hardness of the surface layers is 100 HV higher than that of the core) is formed in the surface layers. 3. Subgrain and grain-boundary hardening, dispersion hardening, and the dispersion of the pearlitic component (quasi-eutectoid) make the basic contribution to the strength increase in low-carbon steels. The theoretically maximum obtainable yield point for low-carbon steels σy = 800–900 N/mm2.

    Notes: Abstract We evaluated the ability of bone density and vertebral fractures at baseline to predict vertebral fracture incidence in a cohort of postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. The study population was 380 postmenopausal women (mean age 65 years) treated for osteoporosis in a randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trial of the bisphosphonate etidronate at seven geographic centers in the United States. Baseline measurements of bone mineral density were obtained in 1986 by quantitative computed tomography at the spine and dual-photon absorptiometry at the lumbar spine and hip. Vertebral fractures were documented on serial spine radiographs. Proportional hazards models were used to evaluate the ability to predict the risk of subsequent fractures during an average of 2.9 years of follow-up. Presence of one or two fractures increased the rate of new vertebral fractures 7.4-fold (95% confidence interval = 1.0 to 55.9). Additional fractures at baseline further increased the fracture rate. A decrease of 2 standard deviations in spinal bone density by absorptiometry was associated with a 5.8-fold increase in fracture rate (95% confidence interval = 2.9 to 11.6). The lowest and highest quintiles of bone density had absolute fracture rates of 120 and 6 cases per 1000 patient-years, respectively. In general, the simultaneous use of two predictors (bone density and prevalent fractures or two bone density measurements) improved fracture prediction, compared with the use of a single predictor. We conclude that both bone density and prevalent vertebral fractures are strong, complementary predictors of vertebral fracture risk. The results suggest that physicians can use bone density and prevalent vertebral fractures, individually or in combination, as risk factors to identify patients at greatest risk of new fractures.

    Notes: Abstract The saline lakes of the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica, are unique ecosystems in which microorganisms survive and grow in cold, saline and often anaerobic conditions. A polyphasic approach to taxonomy of the microbiota has extended the known range of microbial diversity through description of nine new species including bacteria and archaea. Low temperature and reduced water activity are the major constraints on microbial growth in the lakes. Bělhrádek-type models provide a good description of temperature dependence and indicate the potential of the microbiota to colonise their natural habitats. Physiological traits of the microbiota selected by the physical and chemical characteristics of the saline lakes suggest biotechnological potential in areas such as polyunsaturated fatty acid production and hydrocarbon degradation.

    Notes: Abstract A woman ingested 400 ml of leather tanning solution containing 48 g of basic chromium sulphate (CrOHSO4). This substance forms hydrogen ions and trivalent chromium when it reacts with tissue proteins. The patient died of cardiogenic shock, complicated by pancreatitis and gut mucosal necrosis and haemorrhage. There are no reported cases of toxicity due to oral ingestion of trivalent chromium. Toxicity of hexavalent and trivalent chromium is dicussed and suggestions made for management of future cases.

    Notes: Abstract Phospholipid analyses were performed on water column particulate and sediment samples from Ace Lake, a meromictic lake in the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica, to estimate the viable microbial biomass and community structure in the lake. In the water column, methanogenic bacterial phospholipids were present below 17 m in depth at concentrations which converted to a biomass of between 1 and 7×108 cells/liter. Methanogenic biomass in the sediment ranged from 17.7×109 cells/g dry weight of sediment at the surface to 0.1×109 cells/g dry weight at 2 m in depth. This relatively high methanogenic biomass implies that current microbial degradation of organic carbon in Ace Lake sediments may occur at extremely slow rates. Total microbial biomass increased from 4.4×108 cells/ liter at 2 m in depth to 19.4×108 cells/liter at 23 m, near the bottom of the water column. Total nonarchaebacterial biomass decreased from 4.2 ×109 cells/g dry weight in the surface sediment (1/4 the biomass of methanogens) to 0.06×108 cells/g dry weight at 2 m in depth in the sediment. Phospholipid fatty acid profiles showed that microeukaryotes were the major microbial group present in the oxylimnion of the lake, while bacteria dominated the lower, anoxic zone. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) comprised 25% of the microbial population at 23 m in depth in the water column particulates and were present in the surface sediment but to a lesser extent. Biomass estimates and community structure of the Ace Lake eco-system are discussed in relation to previously measured metabolic rates for this and other antarctic and temperate ecosystems. This is the first instance, to our knowledge, in which the viable biomass of methanogenic and SRB have been estimated for an antarctic microbial community.
