    Notes: The optical response of single grain-boundary weak links in superconducting YBCO thin films has been investigated. At temperatures well below the transition temperature, the grain boundary exhibits an optical response which is qualitatively different from transition edge response. Using a resistively shunted-junction model for the grain-boundary weak link, we find that the optical response below the transition temperature can be described by radiation induced thermal modulation of the critical currents of the weak links. The dependence on the bias current and the temperature distinguishes the weak-link optical response from the transition edge optical response. We discuss novel aspects of a potential radiation detector based on grain-boundary weak-link junctions.

    Notes: Bilayers of Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x(YBCO)/Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4−y(NCCO), in which both layers were superconducting, were fabricated in situ by pulsed laser deposition. Using N2O as the reactive gas, we were able to meet the conflicting processing requirements, oxygenation for YBCO, and reduction for NCCO, in the same sample with a specific cooling procedure. The bilayer thin films were c-axis oriented with a transition temperature, Tco, of 88.5 K for YBCO and 18.5 K for NCCO. Supercurrent was observed across the interface of the YBCO and NCCO superconducting layers, indicating the phase coherence between these superconductors.

    Notes: We have investigated the optical response from a single grain boundary in a thin film (∼300 nm) of superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−δ fabricated on bicrystals SrTiO3 substrate. We have studied the temperature, bias current, and magnetic field dependence of the optical response in the temperature range of 15 K≤T≤35 K. We find that the optical response from the single grain boundary in this temperature range can be satisfactorily explained in terms of the optical response of a Josephson weak link. The optical response of the grain boundary is qualitatively similar to that of granular films seen in the earlier studies, indicating that the latter may be dominated by the optical response of grain-boundary weak links.

    Notes: Summary A single whole-body X-irradiation of pregnant Wistar rats at a dose of 1.05 Gy at 10.30, 12.30 and 14.30 h respectively, of gestational day 10 resulted in significantly high incidences of hydrocephalic offspring. No hydrocephalic offspring resulted from X-irradiation of pregnant rats with 1.05 Gy at 16.30 h whereas a dose of 1.22 Gy at 16.30 h resulted in a low but statistically significant incidence of hydrocephalus. Neither 1.05 Gy nor 1.22 Gy X-irradiation of pregnant rats at 18.30 h resulted in any hydrocephalic offspring. Dysplasia of the subcommissural organ was noticed in all the hydrocephalic brains histologically examined.

    Notes: Abstract In some regions of the central nervous system (CNS) of the groggy rat, a mutant with a movement disorder, concentric lamellar bodies (CLBs) were formed in numerous axon terminals and presynaptic axons. These bodies were counted electron microscopically in the lateral cerebellar nuclei of Slc : Wistar and groggy mutant rats at 20 to 180 days of age. In the Slc : Wistar rat groups, the mean numbers of axonal CLBs were mostly under 1.0 per 100 μm2, except for the 30-day-old rat group which showed a value of 1.7. In the groggy rat groups, the numbers of axonal CLBs greatly increased from 40 days of age onward, reaching the maximum mean number of 23.7 per 100 μm2 in the 90-day-old rat group and subsequently decreasing; however, significant numbers were still present in the 180-day-old rat group. Since these bodies have been reported to contain an acid phosphatase (ACPase), the regional specificity of their appearance in the CNS was examined by light and electron microscopic ACPase histochemistry. In the 90- and 180-day-old groggy rats, numerous particulate deposits of ACPase reaction products were found in the neuropil of the lateral, interposed and medial cerebellar nuclei, the superior, lateral and spinal vestibular nuclei, and the spinal gracile nuclei. By electron microscopy, the particulate deposits in the cerebellar and vestibular nuclei were confirmed as the CLBs in axon terminals, while those in the gracile nuclei were revealed to be the dystrophic axons. Thus, it was suggested that the axon terminals and presynaptic axons, having a high capacity to form the CLBs in the groggy rats from 40 days of age onward, belong to the Purkinje cells.

    Notes: Abstract A new mutation displaying abnormal movement was obtained in the progeny of a female Wistar rat which had been given 10 mg/kg methylnitrosourea at an early stage of the gestational period. Genetic studies revealed that the character is inherited by an autosomal single recessive gene, and we designated this mutationgroggy (gene symbolgr). The abnormal movement of the groggy rat was first apparent around postnatal day 15, while the histological studies revealed the appearance of numerous necrotic neurons in the striatum of the groggy rat on postnatal days 60 and 120.

    Notes: Abstract Caprella danilevskii Czerniavski, an epifaunal amphipod crustacean, was successfully reared for two generations under laboratory conditions. Amphipods were maintained in pairs or fours in a Petri dish. Temperature and photoperiod were maintained at 20°C, and 14 h light: 10 h dark, respectively. Colonies of the diatomCylindrotheca closterium (Ehrenberg) Reumann and Lewin were provided as food source. The red algaGelidium amansii (Lamouroux) Lamouroux was used to provide an attachment substrate for the caprellids. Juveniles that emerged from the brood pouch were described as instar I. Subsequent instars were identified by molts. Juveniles molted successively at 2.5 to 6.5 d intervals. The body length of males at each instar increased exponentially, while that of females followed a sigmoid curve. A different pattern of flagellar segment addition in the antenna I of males and females was revealed. At the age of 20.8 d, females reached instar VII, and produced their first embryos. After 5.1 d, juveniles emerged from the brood pouch. On average, females produced 5.4 clutches successively at 5.0 d intervals. The number of offspring per spawning increased from 6.3 at instar VII to 22.0 at instar XII. The total number of offspring was 69.0 for a female throughout her life span.
