Notes: The influence of the crystallographic phase transformation on the work function was studied on a Co(0001) surface by a precise measurement of the contact potential difference. The characteristic hysteresis of the work function due to the hcp(arrow-right-and-left)fcc allotropic transformation was found. The work function changes abruptly by about 2 meV with the phase transformation while decreasing monotonically with temperature except in the transformation range. The contributions of the surface dipole barrier and the chemical potential of electrons to the work function are discussed from the point of view of cellular approximation.

Notes: Forty-one patients with endodermal sinus tumors of the ovary (EST) (23: pure EST, nine: EST with dysgerminoma; and nine: EST with immature teratoma) were treated with cytoreductive surgery, with or without subsequent adjuvant chemotherapy including VAC or PVB. Clinical staging of these patients showed 23 in stage I, six in stage II and 12 in stage III and IV. The outcome was good in the patients with stage I or II disease, with 5- and 10-year survival rates of around 80%. In contrast, all except two patients with stage III or IV disease died within 2 years. Aggressive surgery did not change the outcome of patients with stage I disease. In addition, postoperative chemotherapy was necessary, but the choice of vincristine, actinomycin-D and cyclophosphamide (VAC) or cis-platin, vinblastine and bleomycin (PVB) did not make any difference. Based on the results of the present study, VAC or PVB chemotherapy, after cytoreductive surgery, is essential for cure and conservative surgery followed by VAC or PVB regimen should be recommended for young patients.

Notes: The piezoelectric properties of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric thin layers were investigated by interferometry as a function of frequency and dc electric bias. Materials included: a ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) with a Zr/Ti ratio of 53/47; a relaxor ferroelectric La-modified PZT with a Zr/Ti ratio of 70/30 and a La content of 7.8 at. %; and antiferroelectric lead zirconate. The hysteretic behavior of the piezoelectric coefficient due to polarization reversal was also studied. The layers were prepared by a sol-gel method, and were found to have properties similar to bulk ceramics. Significant strain levels could be achieved in the materials due to the relatively high electric strengths supported in thin-layer form. Polarization was found to be completely switchable between forward and reverse directions; however, the strain levels generated by switching were found to be inequivalent. In addition, pronounced piezoelectric relaxations and strong piezoelectric losses were observed.

Notes: Abstract The phase transformation associated with hardening in a low carat gold alloy for porcelain bonding during continuous heating was studied by resistivity measurements, hardness tests, X-ray diffraction and scanning and transmission electron microscopies. A short-range order structure, based on Au-Pd, was produced at a lower temperature. At an elevated temperature, two types of precipitation were observed. One is a nodular reaction consisting of an L12 ordered structure based on Pd3Sn and a disordered FCC structure at grain boundary. The other is a formation of spherical L12 ordered precipitates based on Pd3Sn within the grain followed by Ostwald ripening. A fine dispersed precipitate of the latter contributed to the remarkable hardening.

Notes: Abstract SiC matrix composites reinforced with the various borides of the transition metals in group IV a-VI a, which were synthesized from the transition metal oxide, boron carbide and carbon mixed with SiC powder. Dense composites containing boride particulates of titanium, zirconium, niobium and chromium were prepared through reactive hot-pressing. The morphology of the internally synthesized boride particles reflected that of the starting oxide powders. SiC-NbB2 composites with four-point flexural strength of 500 to 600 MPa and better oxidation resistance than SiC-TiB2 were prepared even through pressureless sintering process. Pressureless-sintered and HIPed SiC-20 vol% NbB2 exhibited the four-point flexural strength of 760 MPa at 20 °C and 820 MPa at 1400 °C.
