Notes: The effect of generating crosslinks in paraffins by electron impact was utilized to apply these aliphatic hydrocarbons as negative-acting electron-sensitive resists, capable of high structural resolution, anticipated from their low molecular weight. Owing to their chemical stability and relatively high vapor pressure above the melting point, paraffins may be vacuum deposited as thin uniform resist layers. The developing process makes use of the lower vapor pressure of the crosslinked material remaining on the substrate being heated to sublime the unexposed material in vacuum, thus completing an all-dry process.

Notes: We have developed a small scanning tunneling microscope (STM) to be incorporated into a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Vibration isolation and damping is achieved solely with Viton dampers. As a stand-alone unit, a tunnel-gap stability of about 1 A(ring) is reached at atmospheric air pressure without additional sound protection. Stability improves by at least an order of magnitude when incorporated into a SEM.

Notes: Abstract 170 acute toxicity determinations, carried out in rats, mice, and guinea pigs after oral and parenteral administration during the past 5 years, using 5 ♂/5 ♀ animals per dose, were evaluated with respect to the possibility of a reduction of animals necessary for obtaining LD50 values with limits of confidence. Calculations were performed on existing data; no additional animal experiments were initiated for the purpose of this paper. For the majority of substances 3 ♂/3 ♀ animals per dose would have sufficed for the determination of a LD50 value with limits of confidence. Even when using 2 ♂/2 ♀ animals per dose, in most cases sufficently acceptable LD50 values can be determined, if the period of observation — conventionally 4 weeks — would be doubled. Using this procedure, 75% of the animals could be saved. The reduced number of animals and the labor saved thereby would allow for a more individualized observation of single animals thus optimizing the evaluation of acute toxicity testing.

Notes: Abstract The influence of the entrance channel on fission processes was studied by forming the same composite system by two different target-projectile combinations (40Ar+209Bi and56Fe+187Re, respectively). Compound nucleus fission and quasi fission were observed and the analysis was performed in the framework of the extra-extra-push model, which provides a qualitative interpretation of the results; limits for the extra-extra-push threshold are given, but problems with quantitative predictions for the extra-push are noted.

Notes: Abstract Correlations between emission angles and energies of coincidentα-particle projectile-fragment pairs have been measured for the20Ne+197Au system at 390 MeV beam energy. Theα-particles observed close to the direction of the projectile-like fragment were found to result essentially from sequential projectile decay. Starting from the close-geometry data, the contribution of sequentially emittedα-particles was calculated by Monte Carlo simulations for the entire angular range. For deep inelastic events, the measured angular correlations exhibit a spectacular excess over the calculated correlation. This excess is centred close to the beam direction but on the opposite side of it with respect to the detected projectile-like fragment. The correspondingα-particles have velocities around 85% of the projectile velocity indicating emission in an early reaction phase.

Notes: Abstract Mass distributions of fission-like fragments from the system 271 MeV40Ar+165Ho have been measured as a function of the angle. An expected dependence of the mass distribution width on angle due to the claimed contribution of “fast fission” could not be observed.

Notes: Abstract Using the atomic beam magnetic resonance method we observed Ramsey patterns of strongly field dependent transitions of Li, Na and Rb at high magnetic fields. The structures were of high symmetry, with half widths of the central minimums between 20 kHz and 6 kHz. In a first experiment we determined theg J -factor ratiog J (6Li)/g J (7Li)=1+3(70)·10−10.

Notes: Abstract The number and energy spectra of neutrons evaporated by the heavy and light fragments in deep inelastic collisions have been obtained for the system 240 MeV40Ar +197Au. They indicate that at the scission point the deformation energy is a large part of the total excitation energy espe cially for the light fragment. In the last two years, neutron emission has been studied in deep inelastic reactions1−6. All the results are similar: the incident energy which is lost during the process is transformed into excitation energy of the final fragments and is shared between the two products proportionnally to their masses. This means that the nuclear temperature was uniform in the composite system. The excitation energy equilibration time is really very short since equilibration is achieved after reaction times as small as 10−22 s2,6. Moreover, no preequilibrium emission (direct neutrons-) has been observed.

Notes: Abstract Evaporation residue cross sections for the fusion of52Cr and110Pd were studied at four energies close to the barrier (up toE CM −E B =26 MeV). The cross sections were analysed using a multiple-chance fission/evaporation calculation. Agreement with the data is obtained with a fission barrier reduced by 40 to 20%, depending on incident energy.
