Notes: Summary Intracellular records were obtained from neurons in the region of the red nucleus (RN) of cat brain slices. Both EPSPs and IPSPs were recorded in response to local electrical stimulation and these resembled similar electrophysiological responses observed in experiments conducted in vivo. Monosynaptic and polysynaptic IPSPs were observed, suggesting the existence of inhibitory interneurons near or within the RN region. When added to the bathing solution, L-glutamate and L-aspartate depolarized RN neurons with a decrease in input resistance. γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glycine hyperpolarized the cells with a decrease in input resistance. GABA also elicited a depolarizing response. These amino acid actions had direct postsynaptic effects, since the experiments were conducted in a low Ca2+/high Mg2+ medium which blocked synaptic transmission.

Notes: Abstract The photoionization cross sections for multiply charged ions produced by 3p excitation of Kr and 4p excitation of Xe have been obtained by means of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer and synchrotron radiation. It is found that the main formation of doubly to quadruply charged ions in both Kr and Xe is caused from the each initialp-hole state through a Coster-Kronig transition followed by Auger or double Auger processes. The formation of singly charged ions in these excitation energy regions is caused by direct photoionization from outermost shell electrons in both Kr and Xe. Triply charged ions are prominently produced among the multiply charged ions. The quadruple photoionization cross sections show clearly the structures due to the Rydberg series, 3p −1 nl of Kr and 4p −1 nl of Xe. Their main structures were assigned to the 3p −1 nd series in Kr and the 4p −1 nd series in Xe.

Notes: Abstract The reliability of the Japanese public telephone facilities to transmit electrocardiograms (e.c.g.) for computer interpretation was assessed. The International Business Machine's (IBM) e.c.g. computer program by Bonner was used. No appreciable distortion of e.c.g. was observed following repeated transmission from hospitals separated by 1000 km. Thirty-four normal and 66 abnormal e.c.g.s. were transmitted twice. Identical results were observed in 97% of normals and 92% of abnormals. Following these fundamental experiments, 1236 patients' e.c.g.s. were transmitted for computer intepretation. The study showed that 98·6% (1219 cases) were technically satisfactory and 1·4% (17 cases) were not. The 17 unsatisfactory cases were classified into ten unreceivable data formats, six inconsistent measurements and one unacceptable noise level. The authors concluded that the Japanese public telephone facilities were acceptable for the transmission of e.c.g.s. for computer interpretation.
