    Notes: Summary Antibodies raised against glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFA), S-100 protein (S100) and glutamine synthetase (GS) are currently used as glial markers. The distribution of GFA, S100 and GS in the ependyma of the rat subcommissural organ (SCO), as well as in the adjacent nonspecialized ventricular ependyma and neuropil of the periaqueductal grey matter, was studied by use of the immunocytochemical peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique. In the neuropil, GFA, S100 and GS were found in glial elements, i.e., in fibrous (GFA, S100) and protoplasmic astrocytes (S100, GS). The presence of S100 in the majority of the ventricular ependymal cells and tanycytes, and the presence of GFA in a limited number of ventricular ependymal cells and tanycytes confirm the glial nature of these cells. The absence of S100, GFA and GS from the ependymocytes of the SCO, which are considered to be modified ependymal cells, suggests either a non-astrocytic lineage of these cells or an extreme specialization of the SCO-cells as glycoprotein-synthesizing and secreting elements, a process that may have led to the disappearance of the glial markers.

    Notes: Summary Magnetic resonance imaging utilizing spin echo sequences was used to demonstrate cor triatriatum in an 18-year-old boy. Phase map images aided the diagnosis by demonstrating the presence of slowly flowing blood in the accessory atrial chamber. Magnetic resonance is an excellent modality for the noninvasive diagnosis of cor triatriatum.

    Notes: Summary The development of spontaneous bioelectric activity (SBA) was studied in dissociated occipital cortex cultures prepared from 19 day old rat fetuses. All cultures, recorded one per diem from 5 to 33 days in vitro (div), showed SBA. Computer analysis of 76 extracellularly recorded single unit spike trains was carried out after selection on the basis of stationarity criteria. Statistically significant developmental trends were found in (i) interspike interval dependencies and (ii) fluctuations in mean firing rate, on the order of a minute or longer. The highly dependent firing patterns, including stereotyped bursting, were present mostly in the 9–12 div group, whereas minute-to-minute fluctuations in the intensity of firing were considerably more pronounced in the oldest group (22–33 div) than in the younger cultures. In addition, firing categories defined on the basis of factor-analysis revealed that such fluctuations were almost exclusively to be found in neurons which fired in a pronounced ‘burst’, rather than a relatively continuous fashion. Only a few mature appearing synaptic structures were observed electron microscopically prior to 12 div, but increased steadily in number thereafter. No cultures prior to 14 div, but all cultures older than this, stained positively for the presence of glutamic acid decarboxylase. An extensive immunoreactive, putative GABAergic, network was present by three weeks in vitro.

    Notes: Abstract This study investigates the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MR) in identifying avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head and in monitoring its therapy. The detection of AVN, particularly in its early stages, is imperative to give therapeutic intervention the best opportunity for successful management. The results of magnetic resonance imaging are compared with those of the standard diagnostic modalities in evaluation of patients with the lesion. Examinations were performed at 0.12 T with a repetition time (TR) of 143 ms and times to echo (TE's) of 10 or 20 ms. This study represents a retrospective review of 90 hips which were examined in 45 consecutive patients. Of these, 52 hips were biopsied as part of treatment. MR was shown to be sensitive in the detection of AVN. Comparison of MR with radionuclide imaging showed comparable sensitivity and specificity. MR was also noted to be sensitive in the detection of early AVN. Preliminary results suggest that MR can monitor treatment of the affected hip, and may even be able to predict patient response to therapy. Although further work is necessary to determine the role of MR in the evaluation of the patient presenting with hip pain, MR is a sensitive method in detecting AVN and in monitoring its course in patients suspected of having the disease.

    Notes: A study of the efficiencies of two plate distillation columns is reported. One column had three rectangular trays with a flow path length of about 1 m, the other was a modified glass Oldershaw column with one tray of 38 mm dia. Tray efficiencies were measured in both columns and point efficiencies were deduced for the rectangular column.The systems studied were ternary and quaternary mixtures of alcohols and water. The results showed that for thermodynamically nonideal systems significant differences existed among the individual component point efficiencies. In the case of an ideal system the component point efficiencies were effectively equal, but tray efficiencies were different due to differing volatilities and composition profiles across the large trays.This study illustrates the need to allow for the above effects in large-column designs for multicomponent systems. The possibility of using laboratory-scale point efficiencies in these designs is explored.

    Notes: The chemistry that underlies positive imaging, Image Reversal (ImRe) and Built In Mask (BIM), has been investigated. For this purpose the photoactive compound 2, 1 -diazonaphthoquinone-5-(4-cumylphenyl)-sulfonate (PAC-5), the corresponding indenecarboxylic acid (ICA-5) and the decarboxylated derivative of ICA-5 (indene), were isolated and characterized. The study revealed that dissolution of ICA-5 in aqueous base developers gives rise to the formation of an indenyl carboxylate dianion, which decarboxylates in several hours. In the case that ICA-5 is dissolved in weakly alkaline media or in organic solvents such as methanol, the formation of this ion does not occur, but the rate of decarboxylation is almost the same. It is suggested that the decarboxylation reaction proceeds via the indene carboxylate monoanion, which reacts to indenyl anion. The latter is a strong base and is readily protonated to give indene (two isomers). In the case of aqueous base this leads to precipitation of the indene. In agreement with the finding that the indene derived from ICA-5 does not dissolve in aqueous base developers, it was found that mixing indenes into novolak has a considerable inhibitive effect on the dissolution rate of a layer of this material in aqueous base. After a bake (in ImRe this would be the reversal bake), the dissolution rate is almost the same as for unexposed photoresist. Similar experiments with mixtures of novolak and indenecarboxylic acid revealed that there is no difference in the dissolution rate of such layers as compared with exposed photoresist. This excludes the putative effect of porosity, caused by nitrogen extrusion. In the case that 1-phenyl-3-morpholinotriazene is added to the photoresist (in order to produce a dye in the BIM concept), azo-dyes are formed by coupling of diazonium ions on the 1- and 3-position of 3-indenecarboxylic acid. The paper starts with a brief review of the mechanisms of photolysis of 2, 1 -diazonaphthoqui nones, as have been proposed in the literature. Although the formation of ketene as an intermediate is generally accepted, there appears to be no consensus about the existence of carbene.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of cyclazocine on the metabolism of dopamine (DA), noradrenaline (NA) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in regions of rat brain were studied by measuring changes in the levels of the monoamines and their major metabolites. Doses ranging from 4–32 mg/kg were tested. Rats were sacrificed 1 or 2 h after administration of the drug, according to the experiment. Administration of cyclazocine significantly decreased DA concentration and increased the levels of DOPAC and HVA in striatum. Cyclazocine decreased the levels of NA, and markedly increased the levels of MHPG-SO4 and 5-HIAA in cortex, hypothalamus, midbrain and pons-medulla, while little change in 5-HT concentration, except a decrease after the highest dose, was observed. These changes in the metabolism of the monoamines differed in their amplitude and temporal nature. The possible roles of dopaminergic, noradrenergic and serotoninergic neurons in different brain regions are discussed in relation to modifications of locomotor activity and the induction of bizarre behavior resulting from cyclazocine administration in rats. These investigations may add to the understanding of the mechanism of psychotomimetic effects produced in man by this drug.

    Notes: Summary Lipofuscin deposition in nerve cells is one of the most reliable and consistent neurocytological features correlated with ageing. Purkinje cells of long-term alcoholfed rats show large agglomerates of lipofuscin granules after six months of alcohol experiment, whereas in normal biological ageing, this happens only after 25 months of age. Cerebellar interneurons have specific patterns of lipofuscin accumulation during ageing concerning both its morphological type and chronology of deposition. We studied the effects of chronic alcohol treatment on cerebellar interneurons taking particular account of lipofuscin pigment accumulation. Control and alcohol-fed groups for 1, 3, 6, 12 and 18 months were used. A precocious and progressive accumulation of lipofuscin granules occurred in granule, Golgi and basket cells. Stellate cells remained pigment-free. The lipofuscin deposited in the granule and Golgi cells was of the granular type, whereas that of basket and stellate cells was lamellar (fingerprint-like pattern). These results parallel those observed during normal ageing, and reinforce the hypothesis of the existence of a close relationship between chronic alcohol consumption and precocious nerve cell ageing.

    Notes: Summary The morphological study of the rat fastigial nucleus with the Golgi-Rio Hortega method showed the presence of glial perineuronal nets surrounding the large neurons, but not the small ones. This perineuronal net appeared as a mesh of tenuous glial processes which covers the neuronal perikarya and proximal dendrites. The small alveolate compartments in this mesh seem to correspond to the holes for the synaptic boutons. Our results also indicate that the perineuronal net is derived from interneuronal protoplasmic and velate astrocytes. Using camera lucida drawings of this perineuronal net we have made a quantitative estimation of the size and density of synaptic boutons on these large neurons. The average numerical density of synaptic boutons was about 19 per 100 μm2 of the neuronal surface, the mean area of the synaptic holes being 2.5 μm2. Furthermore, the quantitative data evidence that about 52.5% of the neuronal surface is presumably occupied by synaptic boutons whereas the remaining 47.5% is covered by the glial processes of the perineuronal net. Semithin sections prepared from thick Golgi sections were used for the cytological study of the neurons surrounded by this glial pericellular network. The possible functional significance of the perineuronal net in the regulation of synaptic transmission in the fastigial cerebellar nucleus is briefly discussed.

    Notes: Summary The morphogenesis of the ventricular surface of the diencephalon of the rat was studied using scanning electron microscopy, cryostat serial sections and direct observations under a dissection microscope. Based on these observations a description is given of the neuromeres present within the prosencephalon and of the termination of the sulcus limitans. Two conclusions are reached. First, three neuromeres are present in the prosencephalon. Neuromere I consists of the telencephalon, the hypothalamic regions and the parencephalon anterius. Neuromere II is the parencephalon posterius, neuromere III the synencephalon. Second, the sulcus limitans terminates ventrally in the parencephalon posterius and does not continue towards the preoptic recess. No exact termination point of the sulcus limitans could be delineated.
