Notes: Lung calcification was detected in four out of 29 long-term dialysed patients on whom postmortem examinations were performed between 1967 and 1980. On light microscopy, calcification showed either a finely granular and linear localization along the alveolar septa, or a coarse and widespread parenchymal distribution. Histochemical studies revealed evidence of calcium, magnesium and phosphate ions in the deposits. Ultrastructural examination of the less severely involved alveolar septa showed selective deposition of calcium salts within an increased amount of elastin. The deposits consisted of electron dense roundish granules with a concentric laminar structure. They appeared either single or conglomerated in polycyclic formations, supposedly representing the progressive steps of the mineralization process, at first localized within elastin and progressively spreading outside it. The high magnesium content of the deposits suggests that the serum concentration of this ion may play an important role in visceral calcification of longterm dialysed patients.

Notes: Abstract It is shown how to calculate exactly the derivatives of the dispersion relation and the spectral density for arbitrary regular polymer chains in harmonic approximation. The theory is based on a generalization of the characteristic polynomial. In the vibrational part of the free energy and other thermodynamic functions, the integral over normal modes is done approximately by Taylor expanding the density of states.

Notes: Summary A 142 base-pair satellite DNA from the mealworm beetle,Tenebrio molitor, has been cloned and sequenced. The satellite DNA is revealed by making a restriction digest of genomic DNA with either EcoRI or Hinfl, and constitutes approximately 49% of the genomic DNA. The presence of huge amounts of satellite DNA correlates well with the prominent blocks of heterochromatin found in tenebrionid beetles. A similar restriction digest ofXanthogaleruca luteola genomic DNA does not release a prominent satellite component.

Notes: Summary Neoplasms are rare cardiac findings of which myxomas comprise about 75%. We report of 15 patients, predominantly female (60%) with a mean age of 58.8 years. Male patients (40%) were 20 years younger on average. 80% of these tumors developed in the left atrium fixed to the atrial septum. In 2 patients the right ventricle and in 1 patient the right atrium was involved. No left ventricular or bilateral tumors were found. Clinical findings showed a great variety of symptoms. Often misdiagnosis was established until echocardiography was performed. Major symptoms were dyspnea (80%), elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (73%), arrhythmias (53%), lung edema (47%), embolization (40%) and anemia (40%). Pathological examination and tumor genesis are still in discussion. Several theories are reported in literature: a true thrombus, thrombus organization with malignant potential, true neoplasms as well as a familiar myxoma complex may explain clinical and histological features. Our findings did not confirm only one theory but emphasize different possibilities.

Notes: Summary In this study we evaluated the possibility of initiating long-lasting ventricular tachycardias acutely, using isolated porcine hearts and thus avoiding an open-chest operation model. This set-up was designed especially to investigate defibrillating or antitachycardiac pacing devices, which terminate these malignant arrhythmias if medical treatment fails. The experiments were performed on 42 pigs, weighing 20–25 kg. After thoracotomy their hearts were removed and adapted to a Langendorff perfusion system. Supplied with their own blood, beating hearts were manipulated in three different ways: direct current impulses (4.5 V, 750 ms) or programmed ventricular stimulation, creation of a small myocardial infarction, and application of antiarrhythmic drugs (ajmalin, lidocaine, sotalol). Out of all possibilities the combination of ajmalin (mean concentration 0.041 µg/ml) and a small anteroapical myocardial infarction (3–6 cm2) along with direct current impulses (4.5 V), led to sustained ventricular tachycardias in the highest proportion (93%) of trials (P 〈 0.001). The heart rate was 251 beats per minute on average. Lidocaine trials were less successful (53%), while programmed ventricular stimulation and sotalol failed to induce ventricular tachycardias. This study supports the evidence that the combination of ajmalin and a small myocardial infarction with direct current impulses is a reliable model for sustained ventricular tachycardias in isolated pig hearts. Although it is a rather artificial organ model, tachycardias can be induced acutely without any long-term pretreatment. Animal models based on chronic myocardial infarctions will therefore be unnecessary for the investigation of defibrillating systems and antitachycardiac pacing devices.

Notes: Summary Intraoperative visualization of coronary artery anatomy and morphology is an innovative method to evaluate patients undergoing coronary bypass surgery. With the high frequency ultrasonic technique we were able to measure diameters of internal mammary arteries (IMA) before and after dilatation. Probe dilatation of the IMA led to an increase of the IMA diameter of 46% while balloon dilatation was more successful resulting in an enlargement of 66%. The measurement of the flow rates showed similar changes (95% vs. 275%). Furthermore we were able to reproduce coronary artery lesions by echocardiography which could not be demonstrated in the angiogram.
