    Notes: Cyanoacetylene underwent polymerization reaction in a solid phase at pressures above 1.5 GPa. The Raman study of the reaction product showed that the polymer had a conjugated linear backbone with CN pendant groups. The Raman spectra for this substituted polyacetylene demonstrated a resonance behavior similar to that reported for trans-polyacetylene. The optical gap associated with the π–π* transition in the conjugated system was smaller than that of trans-polyacetylene, probably due to the resonance interactions between the CN triple bonds and the conjugated double bonds.

    Notes: Raman spectra were measured for liquid (0–0.7 GPa), crystalline cubic (0.7–0.9 GPa), and orthorhombic (0.9–3.5 GPa) phases in C2H2 at room temperature. For the orthorhombic phase, the high-pressure behavior of the librational and internal vibrations was obtained in a wide pressure range. The frequencies of all the librational modes increased monotonically with pressure, while those of the internal modes showed a variety of frequency shifts depending on vibrational mode. These high-pressure data will be of great use for the construction of theoretical models for the intermolecular interactions in crystalline C2H2.

    Notes: At room temperature, cyanoacetylene undergoes a liquid–solid transition at 70±30 MPa and further a polymerization reaction at 1.5 GPa. Raman spectra indicates that the crystal structure of the high-pressure phase is isomorphic with the monoclinic low-temperature structure (P21/m, Z=2), in which linear cyanoacetylene molecules are joined with CH NC hydrogen bonds to form infinite one-dimensional chains. The internal stretching frequency of the C–H proton donor decreases wtih increasing pressure, while that of the C 3/4 N proton acceptor increases. The librational modes associated with the rotational motions of the rigid molecules show large shifts to higher frequencies with pressure. The observed frequency shifts are attributed to the strengthening of the CH⋅⋅⋅NC hydrogen bond in the one-dimensional molecular chain.

    Notes: The mechanism and kinetics of the pressure-induced polymerization of acetylene were studied by Raman spectroscopy. The polymerization reaction occurred in the orthorhombic phase at room temperature and pressures above 3.5 GPa. Dominant formation of trans-polyacetylene suggested that the monomer underwent trans opening of the triple bond and polymerized along the diagonal of the bc plane of the unit cell. The reaction was described as an idealized one-step and one-dimensional growth process by an Avrami equation with an exponent 1.34.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary From the studies presented here it seems justified to regard some of the systemic effects of burns to be of immunopathologic nature. After cutaneous burns antibodies may be detected serologically which are directed especially against the walls of small blood vessels; in well vascularized organs (kidneys, lungs), these antibodies may produce injury independent of shock. These considerations of the immunopathologic nature of the post-burn illness represent only a part of the entire problem of immunopathology which to date remains incompletely understood. The immunopathologic results presented here, however, do not permit one to advocate using convalescent serum from burned patients for the immune therapy of the post-burn illness.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Nach vorliegenden Untersuchungen erscheint die Berechtigung zu immunopathologischen überlegungen für die Verbrennungskrankheit durchaus gegeben zu sein, da nach einer Hautverbrennung serologisch nachweisbare Antikörper offenbar besonders stark gegen die Wandungen kleinerer BlutgefÄ\e gerichtet sind und damit in stark durchbluteten und capillarreichen Organen (Nieren, Lungen) die Entstehung von schockunabhÄngigen VerbrennungsschÄden einleiten können. Diese immuno-pathologischen überlegungen für die Verbrennungs-krankheit stellen ein Teilproblem der Immunopathologie überhaupt dar, das als Ganzes bis heute noch keinesfalls geklÄrt ist. Die bisher vorliegenden immunopathologischen Befunde gestatten esvorerst nicht, eine Immuntherapie der Verbrennungskrankheit mit Rekonvaleszentenserum von Verbrannten zu befürworten.

    Notes: Summary The ocellus of a synaptid holothurian,Opheodesoma spectabilis, is composed of sensory and supportive cells and underlain by numerous bundles of tentacular nerve fibers. Pigment cells in the tentacular nerve envelope the ocellus. A sensory cell is divided into three parts: an apical part from which a single cilicum and numerous microvilli arise, a slender middle part, and an enlarged basal part that contains an oval nucleus and gives rise to an axon. The axonemes in the cilia show varying degrees of remodelling. The following changes result from exposure to light: the microvilli become shorter and irregularly arranged; plasmalemmal invaginations engulf the microvilli; coated vesicles of varying appearances and membranous fragments become abundant; microtubules are less evident in the apical part; and small flat vesicles appear along the plasma membrane in the middle part. The evolution of photosensory cells and membrane turnover are discussed.

    Notes: Summary Pallido-thalamic transmission was studied by intracellular recording from neurons in the ventrolateral (VL) and ventroanterior (VA) nuclei of the thalamus in cats anesthetized with pentobarbital. Stimulation of the entopeduncular nucleus (ENT) produced short latency, inhibitory postsynaptic potentials in the VL-VA neurons (1.60 ms on average). When stimuli were applied closer to the VL-VA region along the pallido-thalamic pathway, i.e., to the rostral Forel's field, the IPSP latency was significantly reduced. Linear regression analysis of the IPSP latency against conduction distance between different stimulating and recording positions indicated that the IPSP was produced through a monosynaptic pathway at a conduction velocity of 5 to 11 m/s. The neurons which received IPSPs from the ENT distributed in the rostromedial VL and in the rostral VA, whereas relay cells responding only to the contralateral brachium conjunctivum were found in the caudal VL and in the dorsolateral portion of the rostral VL-VA complex. Reciprocal convergence of pallidal and cerebellar impulses were observed in only a small number of cells, which were located in the border between the two neuron groups. Recording of extracellular field potentials and focal stimulation within and around the rostral VL also indicated that the fiber potentials arose from the ENT nucleus and propagated along a bundle of fibers which terminated within the rostromedial VL-VA complex. These results are all explicable by assuming that the entopeduncular neurons are inhibitory in nature and so inhibit thalamic neurons monosynaptically.
