Notes: Abstract The energy shifts in the particle energy due theγ-recoil of an excited state decaying in flight are discussed. Formulae are derived which allow the extraction of spin populations of the decaying state from the line shape in the particle spectrum. Various effects due to kinematics and non-isotropic differential cross section are considered. In most cases a simple extraction of the alignment of nuclear states is possible from a fit to the line shape.

Notes: Abstract The spin alignment of the15N 3 2/* (6.33 MeV) state was measured in the88Sr(16O,15N)89Y reaction atE L =96 MeV using theγ-recoil method. Angular distributions of excited states in15N and89Y were measured with high accuracy. The analysis in terms of DWBA shows that the spin alignment is correctly described by the usual reaction models. The polarisation of the outgoing15N1/2(GS) and15N 3 2/* (6.33 MeV) is discussed. It is shown that cross section differences for transitions to final states with different configurations are sensitive to a spin-orbit potential of15N. The strength and sign of the spin-orbit potential for15N is determined.

Notes: Abstract The spin alignment of the12C2 + state in inelastic scattering of12c on64zn at EL=65 MeV has been measured using the γ-recoil-in-flight method. Good agreement with coupled channel calculations are obtained. The sensitivity of the spin alignment to reaction models is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Measuring energy spectra of nuclei afterγ-decay of excited states in flight the spin alignment of12C2+ states has been measured. Inelastic scattering,16O(16C,12C2+)16O and the reaction12C(16O,12C2+)16O leading to12C2+ (4.43 MeV) state have been studied. Characteristic line shapes of the12C2+ peak were observed using a Q3D magnetic spectrometer. The magnetic substate (m-states) population has been deduced from the spectra as function of reaction angle. A comparison of the measuredm-state population with reaction models shows that the first reaction is consistent with inelastic scattering although discrepancies remain. Discrepancies are also obtained if the reaction12C(16O,12C2+)16O is interpreted using a FRDWBA transfer calculation. At least 1/3 of the cross section can be attributed toα-transfer. A calculation which couples transfer and inelastic scattering channels seems to be necessary.

Notes: Abstract The mass of57Cu has been measured with the58Ni(14N,15C)-reaction at 150 MeV incident energy with theQ 3D-spectrometer. The reaction has been selected after a careful inspection of the DWBA-expression for the cross section with respect to the highest weighting factors for spins andl-transfer. Cross sections of several μb/sr have been obtained. TheQ-value has been measured to beQ 0=−19.90 (4) MeV and the57Cu mass excess is −47 340 (40) keV. Four lines of excited states have been observed up to 5.7 MeV. These states have a structure of single particle character, since57Cu consists of a doubly closed core with N=Z=28 and a proton outside, and states up to the 2d 5-shell are observed.

Notes: Abstract The elastic and inelastic scattering and the neutron transfer have been measured for the systems12C +12C and13C +12C at 20MeV/N up to θcm= 60° with theQ3D -spectrometer. The angular distributions of the elastic scattering show an enhanced cross section at angles larger than 40°. It can be identified as refractive scattering with the clear signature of a nuclear rainbow.L-cut-off calculations show that these contributions come fromL-values which are significantly lower than the grazingL-value. The deflection function has a broad minimum in thisL-range which is typical for rainbow scattering. TheS-matrix is decomposed by a phenomenological parametrization into a refractive and a diffractive part. The interference of these amplitudes plays an important role in the rainbow enhancement. The spatial localization of the refractive scattering is deduced from the turning points of the corresponding trajectories; a localization between 2.5 fm and 4 fm is found. Semi-classical calculations with complex trajectories in the single-turning-point approximation show good agreement with the quantummechanical calculations. Refractive contributions are not observed in the inelastic scattering. This can be explained by reducing the strength of the conventional collective form factor in the internal region. In contrast to this the enhancement at large angles is seen in the one-neutron transfer channels where the refractive scattering is dominant. This is the first observation of such contributions to heavy-ion transfer reactions.

Notes: Abstract First results of the double-charge-exchange reaction9Be(13C,13O)9He, ELab=380 MeV, are presented. The ground state and an excited state at 3.8 MeV are clearly seen. A preliminary value of the9He mass excess is obtained: 41.5±0.6 MeV. Spectra of of the9Be(13C,14O) He-reaction have been measured with high resolution. The ground state transition appears as a pronounced sharp peak, but no other narrow peaks are observed.

Notes: Abstract Using beams of20Ne at 291 and 392 MeV and12C at 300 MeV the inelastic excitation of collective modes in58Ni has been studied with a Q3D magnetic spectrometer. In the analysis different contributions are unfolded from the spectra:1. single lines,2. the inelastic continuum,3. the three-body continuum, which mainly originates from one-nucleon pick-up to unbound states followed by the nucleon emission. Special care was taken to calculate the spectral shape and strength of this process. The population of unbound21Ne-states is measured in a neutron-20Ne coincidence experiment. Coupled channel calculations have been performed to extract the deformation parameters for the inelastic states, including mutual excitation. For the giant quadrupole resonance 70 % of the energy weighted sum rule is found. The excitation of higher multipoles is calculated and extrapolated to higher incident energies (50 MeV/u). The importance of the in-elastic excitation as a “doorway process” to more complex interactions is discussed. It is found that especially the excitation of the projectile (20Ne) takes a large fraction (20–50 %) of the incoming flux in the first step.

Notes: Abstract Experimental results for neutron transfer in the system112Sn+120Sn are presented for three incident energies 4.25, 4.55 and 4.8 MeV/u. Final states are not resolved, however, the data represent transitions between low-lying states. The data are used to extract transfer probabilities and form factors for neutron transfer between low-lying states. A DWBA analysis gives a quantitative description of the observed overall cross section for one-neutron transfer. The enhancement of the two neutron transfer is discussed using semiclassical arguments; in this context additional data for the systems86Kr+208Pb,58Ni+208Pb,136Xe+238U and208Pb+238U are discussed. The general features of quasielastic transfer probabilities defined in a macroscopic way by an energy resolution of ca. 5–10 MeV, which is so far the only experimental possibility, are shown to give meaningful information on single nucleon and pair transfer between heavy nuclei. The latter point is also supported by coupled channel calculations for the transfer flux in these reactions and it is shown that a strong coupling situation is only reached at distances, where very strong absorption due to deeply inelastic reactions has set in.

Notes: Abstract The two-neutron transfer reactionASn(18O,16O)A+2Sn has been measured for the isotopes A=112, 116, 118, 120, 122 and 124 at bombarding energies of 57 and 60 MeV together with the elastic scattering. Angular distributions have been analysed for the transitions to the ground state and to the first excited 2+ state. The observed ground state transition is strongly enhanced. The theoretical DWBA analysis is performed with a finite range 2n-transfer form factor including recoil correction. The calculated cross section reproduces the observed systematic change over all isotopes. The absolute cross sections are normalized by a factor of 4.7 and 7.5, depending on the two different sets of 2n-wave functions used in the analysis. The results confirm the prediction of the pairing model that the transition strengths of a neutron pair between the ground states of even tin isotopes are the same.
