Notes: Beams of high-energy heavy ions (Ar and U) from the UNILAC accelerator have been used to excite rare gases at pressures near 1 bar. The dominant spectroscopic feature observed in Ar, Kr, and Xe gases was molecular excimer emission at the second excimer continuum at 130, 150, and 170 nm, respectively. The excimer radiation was studied as a function of time (with respect to the excitation pulse), ion-beam current, pressure, and excitation density. The efficiency of excimer production from heavy-ion-beam energy was found to be several percent. Details of spectral shape, especially the ratio of first-to-second continuum emission, were found to depend on pressure and exciting beam type.

Notes: Spin-dependent absorption spectroscopy with circularly polarized synchrotron radiation is presented as a new method to study magnetism in magnetic solids. In the near-edge absorption region, the spin-dependent absorption coefficient probes the spin density of unoccupied states of selected angular momentum at the absorber atom. The spin-dependent absorption effects as function of temperature contain information on the local magnetic coupling. A large spin-dependent part of the absorption of ∼+0.22 at the Pt L2 edges in PtFe is observed in transmission and fluorescence mode.

Notes: Abstract The electron-capture decay of Gd151 was investigated by means ofγ- andγ-γ-coincidence spectrometry, using scintillation counters. Besides the knownγ-rays of 22 kev, 154 kev, 175 kev, 244 kev and 308 kev additionalγ-transitions with energies of 107 kev and 350 kev could be assigned to the decay of Gd151.γ-γ-coincidence measurements showed the following cascade transitions: (107 kev–244 kev), (154 kev–175 kev–22 kev) and (308 kev–22 kev). TheK-conversion-coefficients of several transitions were determined by comparing theγ-intensities and the previously known conversion electron-intensities, using a direct measurement of theK-conversion-coefficient of the 175 kev-transition by a delayed coincidence-experiment as a normalization of the relative intensities. With the available information a level-scheme for Eu151 is proposed.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine interaction of the 8·42 kev level of Tm169 was investigated using the Mössbauereffect in Tm-ethylsulfate. The hyperfine-splitting is of pure quadrupoletype; its temperature dependance between 6°K and 250°K was measured. The spectroscopic quadrupolemoment of the 8·42 kev level was determined asQ=−(1·1±0·1) barn, leading to an intrinsic quadrupolmoment ofQ 0=+(5·5±0·5) barn.

Notes: Abstract The temperature dependence of the hyperfine splitting of the 8.42 keVγ-ray of Tm169 in oxide crystals was investigated using the Mößbauer-effect. The quadrupole splitting of the first excited state in Tm169 showed a pronounced increase with decreasing temperature. This manifests a contribution of various Stark levels, which are occupied according to their Boltzmann factors, to an average field gradient at the nucleus. It is shown in a model calculation for the temperature dependence of the field gradient that the data can be explained using a maximum splitting of about 400 cm−1 of the electronic groundstate by the crystal field. The emission pattern of the Er2O3-source is broadened below 20° K. This is possibly produced by an interaction with a residual magnetic field from the surrounding Er-ions.

Notes: Abstract From Mössbauer effect measurements the magnetic momentμ=(+1.80±0.08) nm of the 83.4 keV rotational state of153Eu and the ratio of the changes of the mean square charge radiiΔ〈r 2〉 (153Eu, 83 keV)/Δ〈r 2〉 (153Eu, 103 keV)=+0.025±0.008 were determined. The results are interpreted on the basis of mixing of rotational bands by the Coriolis force.

Notes: Abstract The Mössbauer effect of theγ rays from the 74.5 keV state of Dy161 and the 80.7 keV state of Dy162 has been investigated. From hyperfine splitting patterns the magnetic moments μ(75 keV)=−(0.39±0.04) nm, μ(81 keV)=+(0.74±0.08) nm and the quadrupole momentQ(75 keV)=+(1.4±0.2)b have been determined. For the odd neutron nucleus Dy161 an effective spin g factorg s, eff=0.76 gs, free is deduced for the 75 keV level.

Notes: Abstract The change of the charge radius and the quadrupole moment of the 2+-rotational state of174Yb are determined from Mössbauer measurements. Comparison with170Yb reveals slightly increasing rigidity at constant equilibrium deformation if two neutron pairs are added. Theoretical predictions are discussed, in connection with additional experimental data.

    Notes: Abstract Mössbauer transmission experiments with the 137, 155, 69 and 187 keV gamma rays of186, 188, 189, 190Os, respectively, yielded the electric quadrupole splitting of these gamma resonance lines in OsO2 and OsP2. From the results the following ratios of quadrupole moments were derived:Q 2 +(186Os, 137 keV):Q 2 +(188Os, 155keV):Q 2 +(190Os, 187 keV):Q 3/2 −(189Os, g.s.)=(+1.100±0.020): 1.0:(+0.863±0.051): (−0.586±0.011) andQ 5/2 −(189Os, 69 keV)/Q 3/2 −(189Os, g.s.)=−0.735 ±0.012. The ratios for180, 188, 190Os are, within their limits of error, in agreement with the expectation of the rotational model, indicating that the pairing-plusquadrupole model calculations of Kumar and Baranger predict too rapid a transition form rotational to vibrational nuclei. Applying this argument to186Os in particular and using the measured ratios, one obtains a set of values for the quadrupole moments themselves, namelyQ 2 + (186Os)=−(1.50 ± 0.10)b,Q 2 +(188Os)=−(1.36± 0.09) b,Q 2 + (190Os)=−(1.18 ± 0.08) b,Q 3/2 −(189Os)=+ (0.80 ± 0.06) b, andQ 5/2 − (189Os)=− (0.59 ± 0.05) b. For the electric field gradient at Os nuclei in Re metal a value ofV zz=−(3.3 ± 0.6) · 1017 V/cm2 was found. A measurement with a magnetically split source yielded δ=+ 0.685 ± 0.025 for theE2/M1 mixing parameter of the 69 keV transition of189Os,g 5/2 −/g 3/2 −=0.895 ± 0.006 for the ratio of theg-factors of the 69 keV state and the groundstate, andH i=−(1135 ± 20) kOe for the hyperfine field at Os nuclei in an iron matrix.
