Notes: Summary With rising concentrations of pyridoxine in culture mediumNeurospora sitophila 299 (pyridoxineless) shows a significant increase of the relative amounts of protein, cell wall substances (incl. chitin), and ash, and a decrease of RNA and DNA. The lipid contents remain unchanged. The diameters of pyridoxine deficient hyphae are significantly greater than those of normal hyphae. Electron microscopic examination shows that B6-deficient cells do not contain a thinner or thicker than normal cell wall layer external to the membrane.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1. The phenylalanine tolerance was estimated after intravenous injection of L-phenylalanine in premature newborns, mature newborns, infants and normal adults. The elimination of phenylalanine from the blood followed the pattern of a monomolecular reaction. The rate of elimination was, therefore, chosen for the comparison of the degree of tolerance. 2. The tolerance of phenylalanine was markedly reduced in most of the prematures; the same was found in some of the mature newborn infants. Compared with the tolerance in adults there was no decrease of phenylalanine tolerance in most of the mature newborns and in all infants. 3. The relation of phenylalanine tolerance to the activity of phenylalanine hydroxylase and to the development of the phenylalanine hydroxylase system was discussed.
Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.

Notes: Abstract The microstructure of melt-spun Al-17.3 at% Cu eutectic alloy ribbons with different thicknesses have been revealed by means of electron microscopy and X-ray techniques. Thick ribbons (〉20μm) consist of finely-dispersed α-Al and Al2Cu equilibrium phases showing lamellar or irregular morphology. In thin ribbons a considerable fraction of supersaturated α-Al solid solution and the metastable Al4Cu9 phase have been detected. The experimental facts on the identity of the phases, their morphology and particle size for given processing conditions are discussed within the framework of a heat flow model including the solidification process as well as post-solidification transformations. The microstructural features are considered to be determined by local and time variations of the ribbon-wheel contact.

Notes: Summary Considerably different transfer factors soil/plant are reported in literature for the fission product ruthenium. As ruthenium belongs to those radioactive nuclides, that could be released from a reprocessing plant during an accident, reliable transfer factors should be explored under middle-European conditions for some typical nutrition plants. In an artificial humous and sandy soil spiked with 106Ru as RuO2 and RuCl3, pasture grass was grown under artificial illumination in our laboratory. The amounts of ruthenium taken up by the plants were determined by γ-spectrometry. For open-air investigations with pasture grass, wheat and potatoes inactive ruthenium(III) chloride and ruthenium nitrosylchloride were used. Ruthenium was determined by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) after destroying the organic material and concentrating the solution. The concentration and chemical form of the ruthenium exert an unimportant influence on the transfer factor. For the pasture-grass, the stems of wheat and the weed of potatoes it amounts to 0.00005 to 0.0015, for the ear of wheat to about 0.00005. In peeled potatoes there was no ruthenium detectable, therefore the limit of detection leads to a transfer factor ≤0.00001. So it is evident that ruthenium is little available for the roots of the plants. In the event of an accident in a nuclear plant the uptake of radioactive ruthenium by roots has only negligible radioecological consequences. This applies even if 50 years of ruthenium enrichment in the soil are assumed.
